All we ever heard was that it would be "significantly long" and that the current season was two cour. That by no means there would never be more. KyoAni never felt the need to state ahead of time that Clannad would run for four cour, after all. I think the only reason he's saying this now is because people insisted on assuming that it will only be 26 episodes, ever, when nobody from the production committee ever said any such thing. He's probably referring to ovas animating the extra 3 arcs in ecstacy. In all seriousness, 3 to 4 episodes per character arc and the remainder for refrain is enough to pull it off. People forget how incredibly repetitive refrain actually is. Kanon used 10 whole episodes for the intro and Makoto arc but still managed to cover 4 arcs in 24 episodes. |

Kyou's isn't really well-adapted. Her OVA is rushed as hell. A well-adapted story of Saya's can fit at least 3-4 episodes. Even it's incredibly repetitive. Even Kanata's story is also long.
