The first Saki season ended up with Kiyosumi being qualified to go to the national and finished up with the national entrance ceremony. From that point on the story was divided into two side: Side A and Side B. You can see it as two smaller tournament where the 2 best school of each side will fight each other in the final. Achiga-hen episode of side A was about the side A and is adapted from the manga with the same name. We weren't shown Kiyosumi's progression in the tournament and they solely focused on Achiga getting to final (obviously with Shiraitodai). This new season will continue to animate the Saki manga from where it left it. This will focus on side B and will focus on Saki trying to make it to final. So it's after the first season of Saki but it'll start at the start of the national while Achiga-hen is already close to the final. So it's a sequel to the first season and a parent-story Achiga-hen. I'm really really really happy about that news. Achiga got it really easy so far. Toki was strong but apart from Shiraitodai, side B is where the real monster are participating. |

The manga is actually too far from it, the season will probably finish with the semi final match. The final and the individual tournament will probably be in another season. |

All three series have the same staff members. Gonzo's fifth studio worked on the original series. When Gonzo got into financial trouble and went into restructuring, the fifth studio staff left Gonzo and formed Studio Gokumi. Gokumi is now animating both Achiga-hen and Zenkoku-hen. The rights to the manga belong to Square Enix and the anime belongs to TV Tokyo, not Gonzo. That's why it seems as if the animation production team changed. |
