The big problem with Katanagatari is that it was produced one episode per month... and this really shows, because the quality of the episodes is very inconsistent. Some of the episodes were fantastic... 4 and 5 in particular stand out. But others? Not so much. The first and last episodes in particular were very sub-par.

While I would like an example of NisiOisiN's excellent writing style somewhere in the relations list, if anything I think that the Medaka Box manga would be the best pick for that, once it eventually finishes. I'll be voting no.

EDIT: holy shit medaka box went downhill disregard that last part

Katanagatari is a NisiOisiN anime freed from the harem backdrop that weighs down Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari, but also is distinctive for showcasing the extended episode format to good effect, giving each episode room to stand on its own legs, something episodic anime tend to struggle with.

With both its length and art style Katanagatari strayed from convention, and the result was an eye-catching and memorable show. The travel-log feel of the anime was appreciated; without it, I still might not know about the Tottori sand dunes.

The plot has a feeling of pointless despair in it almost reminiscent of a Haneke film that at its worst leaves the viewer feeling like everything was pointless and a waste of time, but I still found the ending to be full of impact and the plot memorable. Another note of praise is the soundtrack, which uses a large and varied collection of music to good effect. Every episode had its own ED, and of this some real gems were produced. Hiteihime, ED11, in particular is something I keep coming back to.

For its music, visuals, dialogue, charming characters, and an Edo-period setting that for once finds an agreeable balance between history and fantasy elements, I will be voting yes.

Agreed with Jolon.

Also, the romance in Katanagatari is much better than most series, due to the unique dynamic between Togame and Shichika. The characters' personalities, along with progress in their relationship, puts this series well above anime like Bakemonogatari or Spice and Wolf. Shichika's personality of never being around humans before is hilarious, and Togame is much more than the usual tsundere.

Excellent characters, visuals, music, dialogue, and story structure. Great romance as well. I'll vote yes.

Funny, I found the romance really fake.

Anyway, I will just copy/paste my original thoughts after watching the last episode (SPOILER ALERT):

yamakasi said:
Wow. So Togame gets the longest, most cliche, nonsensical and unhelpful death scene in the history of anime ever. We went through a battle with a sword per month, just so Shichika could defeat them all in one episode. Ultimately the collection of the swords (and the deaths of countless people) were for nothing, because nothing changes. And then Shichika forgives Princess Hitei, who has done a 180 personality-wise, and they go and travel. What a clusterfuck.

Anyway.

The series had good art and nice animation. Music was nothing special. The show also gets major props for some daring choices: "generous" dialogue; not showing the fight with Sabi in episode 4; the yandere twist with Nanami; the horrible death of Pengin; and killing Togame at the end, therefore negating a happy ending between her and Shichika.

However that doesn't make up for the generic plot, falsity (IMO) of the relationship between Togame and Shichika, and not enough characterisation to flesh out the side characters and make them more than This Month's Villain. Emonzaemon was probably the most intriguing side-character but even he wasn't really given enough depth. I also mentioned this to someone, but I've realised that episodic "capture" anime (like this, Kobato. and Kaminomi) aren't my cup of tea.

Overall, I'm giving it 5/10. It was going to be 6 but this last episode shat over everything. I don't know, I might change my mind later.

Yeah so that is a definite no.

Pretty much my thoughts, the characters were underdeveloped, while interesting at moments but ultimately anticlimactic. When ever Togame and Shichika developed their characters from more than cardboard sterotypes of the shounen hero and tsundere love interest, the avenue was dead ended at each episodes finale, and was not to be carefully expanded upon later to completion. The final episode destroyed all hopes of the series having any finality other than disappointment. The villains were as yamakasi pointed out mostly static, accept for Nanami who also unfortunately becomes another sideshow that doesn't help really flesh out Shichika's biggest flaw, his apparent and or falsified idiocy.

On the positive side the animation was refreshing and different from the average anime, but sort of reminded me something I'd watch on The WB. The relationships between Togame and Shichika and Shichika and Nanami were interesting in a sadomasochist way, and yet even this dynamic was never really fleshed out to make the series ecchi/hentai in those regards, which is probably better for the average viewer but I'd like to see them go farther, like in Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari. Surely, much of what I dislike about this series is a strength in many other peoples opinion. I just don't see this particular series as being exemplary in any aspect. The closest thing would be it's art style and animation, but even that was not amazing enough to keep me from giving more than a 4/10 for it's overall inability to find some sort oh glue or moral to really tie the series together and make a tragic ending actually feel tragic. Honestly I didn't care in the end, and that's a huge problem in a series of this sort.

Translated review: http://naomeapeteceestudar.blogspot.pt/2012/11/katanagatari.html

Oh the motivation I had, 12 episodes I see them in a flash. But no. It's 12 episodes with 50 minutes each. Released once a month. Oh well, you can't have only good things in life.

The interesting about this anime is the art, animation and character design. The backgrounds are complex and passionate, with a certain traditionalism imprinted. The design is extremelly original, with really cute clothes (and cosplayable).

The interesting of these designs is that they have nothing to do with the story or the setting in which it's passed. They are very coloured, for a dark story, and very sweet. I'd even cosplay, but we'll see after why not. As for the animation, excellent production. We have every episode a fight of epic proportions, with resource to computer techniques that work extremelly well., in an explosion of colours and special effects.

The problem of this series is... Everything else.

The story is simple: a girl makes a guy look for some swords. And with this we have a base of monster of the month (12 episodes, 12 swords) that is not very solid.

The characters are very basic and true stereotypes, a genki bói and a tsundere that unite and end up developing a relationship. This looks a bit forced right from the first episode. The most interesting relationship ends up to be the one of the sister, but it's cut at the middle of the series. The culminating of everything is frustrating and leads us to think why they made this.

The music is an excellent aspect of this series, extremelly varied (one ED per episode) and very intense.

However the art and the music do not compensate the lack of content of this series. It could have been very interesting and an excellent work if it was not the moments of comedy out of context and the basic personality of the characters.

Was it a movie or a normal series I'd recommend. Like this, no.

for as much as i liked a lot of the style of the show, the show was hella boring.

40 minute episodes, of which about 35 minutes felt like it was just super boring and lengthy exposition to mostly still frames.

Keeping it short and simple.
Boring anime with cardboard characters and dull plot. Some decent episodes, but most were sub-par. Not Medaka Box level atrocious, but quite close.
Overall 4/10.
