I've never gotten why people distinguish between friends you make online and ones you make in person as "online" and "real".

Are the people I meet online and the bonds I form with them somehow fake because I didn't meet them originally while walking down the street? It's retarded.

Online and in-person are much more suitable descriptions because it's the only difference - especially nowadays where even those you know in person will mostly contact you via text message, IM, facebook, twitter, etc rather than in person or even over the phone/skype. If anything, the friends you make online have a higher chance of forming meaningful bonds with you than those you meet in person. In one case, all you can do is grow further apart - in the other all you can do is become closer.

when i am on the internet i rather talk to online friends than real life friends. i leave talking with real life friends to real life.

i'm very close with my friends on Mabinogi (a free MMORPG) we talk and skype and I have some of their phone numbers so I talk with them. They're awesome.
