And if so, which series?

Ah, I know the translators are using their own time to do this and they don't owe us anything but it's still a pet peeve to get a good manga ruined because it takes too much effort to understand what is going on ><

Has this happened to anyone else?
For me it'd probably be Vampire Knights as of now...

Not really. Some had poor translations but I wasn't really into them anyway so it didn't matter.

Yup halfway through the dragon ball manga the translation started getting crazy. They flipped the pages to make them read left to right. They edited the pictures to make the scans look more digital instead of on paper. And use a horrible almost comic sans like font. Pissed me off so bad but I managed to finish.

The whole translation of Another and maybe halfway through Mirai Nikki.

It is a freaking alphabet soup - like every 3rd to 4th word misspelled, the whole grammar messed up and no continuous naming scheme. Puzzling the story together from the little one understands and the panels/context alone was a nightmare.

There are a lot of bad translations of GTO floating around the internet, which put me right off at first.

AI ga Tomaranai! manga. Probably the most ridiculous translations I've ever read. There have been others, but this one especially... this example says it all.

Strangely though, rather than ruin the manga, it actualy made me admire it more, because of how amazing a read it still managed to be.

Berserk was really good. But by God I couldn't understand why they couldn't spell for shit.

I feel that a poor translation is karma's way of hinting that the reader should invest in a physical copy of what they're reading

On a related note, there was this scantlating team/person that did hilarious edits/translations of random hentai manga & doujins, usually re-writing the entire story to form a much more coherent one than the original in the process

I haven't had a manga 'ruined' for me, but it's a bit jarring when things are grammatically incorrect (even just simple errors)... It's hard to take a scene seriously when a character says something like 'I will take you life.' It's pretty distracting.

However, this is usually only for a few chapters here and there, because groups that do a better job usually jump in ^^;

I wish there was some way for me to proofread manga as I read it :P

It's happened quite a few times, I don't even rememeber what they all were but they were pretty terrible from what I remember. It wasn't so much the translation (though that had a part in it) it was more of the half-hearted typesetting etc.

Slam Dunk translation could be so much better and that's only because I own the manga and knew it from one glance that they are doing a rather literal word-to-word translation.

Not really I'll still read the manga but it does bug me a bit when there are grammar and spelling mistakes. It's like reading a whole paragraph someone typed in chat speak.....

I usually start thinking that English might not be the translator's first language which helps me overlook these mistakes,but still....It's a bit distracting....

Definitely annoying, happened with Cat Street. I usually just spend an extra dozen or so seconds on the page, thinking of what they were trying to say. Then it's on to the next page and forgotten. Scanlations in general are pretty shitty, honestly. I mean, there are some good groups, but I feel like I come across the mediocre ones way more often. But as long as it's readable, I'll push through.

A few times, INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. Also with MASSIVE quality drops, changing the character's names (which happens in subbed anime too :/).

Once I almost stopped reading was La Corda d'Oro because the quality dropped about 10 rungs down, they'd use different fonts, the text wouldn't fit in the textbubbles--few things like that.
Other series I stopped reading, I just can't remember the title of.

EDIT: I actually dropped Vampire Knight at Volume 7. They changed the font. >.>
And I dropped Chobits. The translation started making absolutely no sense at all. Also, other people advised me that it was just a heap of fanservice near the end of the series. I found the pacing too slow and stopped at V3.

No and I hope I will never see them.

What happens sometimes is that I run into mangas where the translation is fine but the scans are of subpar quality, making it hard to figure out what's going on. I hate when that happens...

As for actual bad translations, the infamous "Duwang" translations of Jojo part 4 come to mind. God those were awful...but it somehow added to the experience ^^

Stuff like that can have a bad impact on how much I enjoy a manga, but usually not enough to "ruin" it.

Sakuran. It's a period piece with timeline jumps/flashbacks. A recipe for disaster when the Engrish translation is close to incomprehensible. I got the general jist of it, 7/10'd it and left it at that. Thankfully, Vertical have now put it out with an official, more understandble translation.

There are many bad translations. Hence one of the reasons I'm learning Japanese.

Stupidity annoys me.
If you're not fluent in Japanese AND English.... don't translate.
