So I'm looking for iconic anime to watch. And by iconic I mean shows like

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Hokuto no Ken
Cowboy Bebop
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu

I know I haven't watched some of them,but I've already got them on my download list and I'm looking to expand my horizon.I would really appreciate some help :) Oh,and don't mention anything that's on my PTW list,cause I've already downloaded most of them. Thanks again!

Death Note (though I'd say go with tthe manga)
Fullmetal Alchemist (both versions)
going by what the people on MAL always say Legend of the Galactic Heroes (personally I've seen two movies and wasn't that impressed)

Have you watched Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica?

Steins Gate
Higurashi (both seasons, cuz everything will piece together epically in season 2)
Serial Experiments Lain

Hmmm... I also recommend this ongoing anime called Humanity has Declined, it's very avant-garde or clever in terms of screenplay.
Did you say "nerd"?

Not "nerd" -- "node".

@grandy_UiD

I've read Death Note already,and I heard the anime is inferior to the manga,so..
I'm not that good with long-running anime,so I probably won't watch TTGL anytime soon. I have a hard time finishing serious anime that goes over 13+ episodes.
I've read FMA too,but I'm planning to watch Brotherhood.

@SnakeBeater

I've watched Puella Madoka Madoka Magica,Steins;Gate and Higurashi already. I put Serial Experiments Lain on hold,not really in the mood for it at the moment.

YOU HAVE TO WATCH TTGL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Your life will be in danger if you don't.

I'm watching FMA Brotherhood and every episode makes me feel like crying tears of awesome. Don't get too focused on the lenght of the series, FMA is 64 but trust me, once you start it, you'd rather have it last forever. Same happens with many series, so stop caring that much about the number of episodes and enjoy.

It's not about the number of episodes,it's about my attention span. I get bored way too quickly,even if the anime is good. Happened with Blood+ and now I have a hard time finishing Gintama.

Hokuto no Ken definitely counts. It's like one of the first long running Shounen Jump series. And for mecha there are the first Macross and Gundam shows. Other than that, Harlock and Yamato for some space opera and maybe Urusei Yatsura for comedy. Rose of Versailles for historical drama, Sailor Moon for magical girls and if you want more SJ titles, then Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya are good ones. Ghibli should be considered too: so watch at least Laputa, Nausicaa and Totoro.

Then some that hit big in the west on the scifi department like Ghost in the Shell (1995 movie) and Akira.

well right off the bat I can say that if you are looking for iconic anime and never seen a Miyazaki film (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.) then you probably need to go watch those ASAP... those films are popular enough that many people love them and don't even know they are anime, or what anime is... Aside from that a few I could recommend are:

- Durarara
- Eureka Seven
- Lamune
- Wolf's Rain

probably a lot more but gotta go pack for college so sadly don't have more time to link a ton of anime you might like. If you have trouble staying hooked on a series you might not like wolf's rain and Eureka Seven but who knows, anyways good luck and hope you find what your looking for.
