Maison Ikkoku is the most appropriate recommendation; a magnificent work whose themes were imitated by countless other series, none quite reaching its level. It starts somewhat slow and silly, but eventually builds to one of the best romances I have ever seen. It has a glorious conclusion. Edit: Lorelei's review is quite telling. Let me just advise people interested in maison ikkoku to watch the anime rather than read the manga; the music fits perfectly and greatly enhances the atmosphere; the voice acting is also pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ2LRE7bshE Modified by hentai_proxy, 08-18-12, 5:01 PM |

Well, there are not many such anime, unfortunately (in Japan, older female / younger male romance is something extremely bizarre :/ ). You can try Ah my Goddess, but the 'romance' is * extremely * slow. |

I agree 100% Maison Ikkoku is pretty much totally influential, but I gotta say Takahashi's brand of humor, as well as overall delivery has more impact in manga format. But if you MUST watch an anime, MI's anime is greatness with a whole host of talented VAs and is entirely amusing in it's own right. Dad, I'm in space. I am proud of you, Son. Dad, are you space? Yes, now we are a family again. - Space Core |

But for the romance and the more serious parts, I found the anime more intense, mostly due to the ambient music and pretty good direction. |

As everyone else said, Maison Ikkoku is exactly what you're looking for. I suppose Spice and Wolf could fit as well, but Holo, who is a 400 year old wolf diety takes on the form of a 15 year old girl, whereas the main character is in his 20s, so their looks differ. On a side note, there are many manga series that have what you're looking for, most notably Unbalance x Unbalance, which is very popular. "The world breaks us all. Afterward, some are stronger at the broken places." - Ernest Hemingway |

I see you've been recommending Spice and Wolf to everyone. Holo is pleased. |
