I find the averages to be decent enough guesses and pretty good measure of fan opinion. I don't use the averages to make viewing decisions but I also don't dispute what most anime here are rated.

Ya pretty much that.

Zero.

Especially when there's like a 130,000 voter gap between #1 and #2

If a lot of people like it and it interests me, then I will most likely enjoy it.

Why would I try and put critical thought into how much I enjoyed the anime 0o. I mean, sure some anime are interesting enough to cause such thinking, but its not a requirement..

I tend not to look at anything below 7. That is, for NOW since I have so much of the great stuff to watch. When I'll be done with pretty much everything above 7 that interests me I won't mind the rating.

I have been doing this since I started, with some exceptions. It lasts for a very very long time.

I glance at it, but a super high rating or a super low one won't deter me from watching it.

None. MAL ratings are usually the epitome of stupidity.
If you take anime seriously, you're autistic.

I find that the ratings do help me choose which anime to watch, but they don't stop me from watching something if I'm set on watching it.

I don't believe the ratings on this are substantive at all. People have different opinions and view as well a expectations even before completing the series. I find most users to overrate many series solely based on enjoyment rather looking at the execution of the story line, character development and the character's individual aims.

I stopped taking ratings seriously after Sword Art Online got an 8.6 and Shakugan no Shana III got a 7.9 when it deserved a 4. Meanwhile, some of my favorite anime like High School DxD or Kore we Zombie desu ka? get shafted just because they don't like the genre.

My advice? Just say fuck ratings and decide on a series by its premise and characters.

If the synopsis sounds promising enough, then I'll consider watching. At least place it in my PTW-list for the time being.

Critical thinking doesn't tend to apply to ones TV viewing.

I imagine the vast majority of people saying "none" are lying.

I definitely take it into account, it's useful to take general opinions/feelings into account, as they represent an average (I know there are biases, but that doesn't really matter). Obviously a personal recommendation, or praise from a trusted source, holds more weight, but the collective rating is not useless. To illustrate that: how often do you see someone with a favourite anime that isn't in the top 1000 or 1500? Not very often, I'm willing to bet.

For me both the ratings and reviews are somewhat of a blessing and a curse. What I mean by that is sometimes they can be very helpful and informative, enabling me to find a specific type of anime I'm in the mood for. But the catch is that you have to be able to disregard the ratings/reviews somewhat or you can easily go in to an anime with bias which usually makes a negative impact on my viewing experience personally.

I think in the end I'd be better off just searching through genres and series recommendations and saving the ratings/reviews for later if I want to hear what others got out of a particular anime.
We can't stop here, this is bat country.
