MAL, though good for what it is, has many shortages. For instance how many of us haven't thought "damn, why can't this site create a graph of our scores, or show us some personalized recs". Throughout the years I've stumbled upon various tools created by some of the more tech-savvy members of this site that add to what MAL offers. Problem is most of them remain unknown until the aforementioned 'stumbling'. So I thought: let's make a thread where everyone can share whatever tools he might know of. Currently I'm aware of two that seem functional, these are: 1)MALgraph which creates a graph of our scores and shows some additional totals. 2)animecf which creates a personalized recommendation list. People, if you know of more feel free to add them. |

This thing is amazing. I have only a tiny base from which it can pick recommendations, and yet all the top ones it gave me were recommended recently by a friend, based on my tastes. Thanks for the tip. ![]() |

Sweet jesus... MALgraph taught me things about myself that I didn't even know (as far as anime preferences go)... mind = blown As for the AnimeCF... meh, quite a few of the recs are sport animes, and I hate those (which the MALgraph can confirm). |

animecf sucks. All it apparently does is gives you the list of highest rated/most popular shows you haven't seen. |

To people bashing animecf, admittedly I too am a bit weary of the way it calculates things and of whether it really does what it says, but some of the recs its given me seemed to be interesting. So why not? |

At least it's giving me some variation, once you get past the Arias, LOGH, Monster and Mushishi, putting things like Anne of Green Gables, A Dog of Flanders (Movie) and Oniisama e... ahead of more traditional high-scorers like Cowboy Bebop and GitS SAC. |

Nice thread Alas86, it's a great idea to have of these programs in one place so more people can know about them. Here are some very useful greasemonkey scripts that I have come across. MAL tag fixer script ftp://84.245.201.6/devel/web/userscript/mal_tags/latest/mal_tags.user.js lets you create your own custom tags for MAL...replacing the old tag option that hasn't been working on this site in forever... MAL search filter script http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/45199 lets you hide anime and manga from search results that you already have added to your list... |

One of two things may be happening: 1) You might actually like those anime (possible, but less likely if #2 is valid). 2) You haven't given an accurate representation of the anime you have watched in your MAL ratings. Obviously, if you do not like sports anime, you should have low ratings in your MAL, as you have both watched some of the anime and did not like it. AnimeCF only works if it knows both the anime you LIKE as well as DISLIKE. In fact, the anime you dislike may be more important than the anime you like. Try giving a low rating to several of the recommended anime you dislike, and hit "Queue Update". Your recommendation list should look completely different. Just giving an extremely low rating to several sports anime should hide nearly all of them from your list. |

Well if it gives recommendations based off the genre only, then it's already flawed. I'm not supposed to like or dislike all sports anime or all mecha anime. I can easily have 10 sports anime rated 10 and 10 sports anime rated 4. It should take other factors into concern, like the studio, for example, or the production year (if I mostly have shows from 2000's on my list then I probably won't be interested in all that 1980's stuff), or the ratings given to the related shows (I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be getting The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya as a 8.5 predicted rating recommendation while I've given the TV series a measly 6 and dropped all the related shows). |
