Just wondering why this is? A lot of people seem to hate on dubs online although that's the way that most anime becomes known about in the first place. I can understand if the dub is generally badly done like 4Kids and even just liking the original japanese version better but I just don't get the hate. On youtube, people will actually go out of their way to come onto someones dubbed video and bash it.

90% of the anime I watch is dubbed, only watching a couple of shows in Japanese or rewatching the ones I really liked that way so it's like a different experience. Seriously though, can anyone explain to me what this is about?

a long time ago dubs were done terribly and even tho they have progressively gotten better in later years they still have some major issues. Bad casting choices,people with low voice range and over all terrible script changes. Its like when they call a onigiri a donut in the first season of pokemon, they coulda called it a rice ball.

Sometimes people just feel the original voice actors convey feelings the best and in some cases i agree cause i think maybe the english actors just don't take the role all to seriously.

Some people are just plain ignorant and want to ruin the format for everyone and act out the way you describe. I appreciate both formats if done well but even in japanese you can have actors with horrible voices.

Dubs usually sound odd and are bad compared to subs.

Why do people hate on dubs? Because they suck.

Have you watched an American movie/TV show dubbed in other language? Have you watched an American movie dubbed in Japanese? I watched a clip of Harry Potter dubbed in Japanese, and it just isn't right.
Personally I don't mind dub IF it's optional, ie. the original version is available, thus people have a choice. Problem is, sometimes that's not the case, and worse, some dubs modify (sometimes heavily) the original content itself.

Meh it's mainly because a lot of the dubs out aren't exactly the greatest. So it is stereotyped as usually bad.

However I can't fully agree with that. I did find shows like FMA:Brotherhood and Haruhi Suzumiya to be pretty good dubbed. It's just that overall you'll find many more bad dubs then good ones.

Yeh.. people would probably include me too.. except i don't complain about it 24/7.. It's just that the dubs voicing isn't as good as the real version, not only for anime though,nearly everything i watch I prefer it to be the original with a sub

See I can't stand Haruhi or FMA: B dubbed, the voices just don't fit.

I like anime because i can get a break from the hollywood badass movies etc, so watching anime and they speak american? No thanks.

Aaaaaand it sounds HORRIBLE.

Maybe it's just hard to get rid of the bad impression left by some bad dubs in the past?

I wonder whether anyone who wasn't born or hasn't lived most of their lives in a country that has English as it's mother tongue (or at least an official language which most of the population can speak) would prefer English dubs over subs.

I don't think dubs are all that bad. Sure, a lot of them suck, but a lot of them are pretty well-done, too. Sure, if you compare it to the Japanese version it'll almost always be inferior, but as a stand-alone a lot of (more recent) dubbed anime isn't all that bad. At least in my opinion.

In most dubs they try to make all the characters sound really badass for some reason. Even some random school kid is given a dark 'manly' voice. And also the voice acting generally sound very rehearsed and not natural at all.

I have no idea. i can understand preference, but not ignorance like saying all dubs suck.

I tend to get the subbed version(unless the dubbed version is easier to get), be-cease it lowers the "risk" of getting a bad dub(which still happens). Sure, There are plenty of good dubs, like DtB, death note, Spice & wolf, FMA:B etc... Some are even better than the subbed version(hellsing:ultimate).

But not all dubs are like that(strike witches for example).

But hey, atleast its not even close to being as horrible as when my country dubs something. Oh god the horror of that..

I remember back when I was little(When I was like 7/8~ or something) We had a few shows(cartoons) that would show the dubbed version for the kids during the day, and then the subbed version in the middle of the night, and I would watch those becease I preferred the voices.

Indeed. People might have had a point a decade ago when most anime dubs were not good. Fortunately the English-dubbing companies have improved since then but it looks like most of the fandom didn't get the memo. There's also Stockholm Syndrome at work; most anime viewers will likely watch a show in Japanese first so any voice changes usually feel awkward.

The only valid defense I've seen for the original Japanese version is how the seiyus have typically been working with the director to provide the best experience possible. Makes sense. I'd like to say though that barring a throwback to poorly done English dubs of anime, the dubbing companies do an excellent job of remaining true to the script without completely Americanizing it; they have that balance between ignorance and purist so to speak.

I've also seen people bringing up points such as an English dub distracting from the original Japanese version's artistic integrity. If anything, however, it actually lets native English-speakers focus on said artistic integrity without having to keep a periphery on the entire screen.

Now, I can read subtitles as well as anyone but I'd prefer an English dub if possible so long as it isn't bad (it's kind of sad I have to keep reminding everyone of that low-quality clause as that's effectively in the past now).

And as someone else mentioned in the thread, the Japanese voices are not infallible either. I'm looking at you, Kuroko Shirai.

I generally just don't like how they pronounce the Japanese names. If they just gave them English names, I might give the dubs a chance

Obviously because I love originality!

The one with dubbed is not so good compare to the original one in term of the voice..


Also, when I watched Pokemon in dub, the name of the Pokemon were different! Damn it!

I watch both.

In the end it's all about personal preference. :)

I for one watch my anime with subs, it's not that I hate dubs where my ears will bleed whenever I watch a episode that is dubbed. It's because I enjoy watching my anime with subs to the extent where I'll try to learn what they are saying even though it could be hard sometimes but mostly it is to hear the cute seiyuu's voices. =3=

P.S. When i watch raw I kinda able to get what they are trying to say and it's like an achievement to me that is. XD
