Dubs aren't always horrible, though I still prefer Japanese. Just my personal taste. It's hard to get across the exact sort of emotion that has been going for by Japanese Seiyuu. It's more of a localization, in many cases. I tend to enjoy the Japanese culture in anime as is and don't prefer any sort of localization. If I want American culture, I can just go outside. Subs may not be inherently better, but they at least have the advantage of giving me something different in my life. |

Dubs aren't always horrible. Death Note, Darker Than Black and Code Geass had good dubs and since I'm watching Cowboy Bebop dubbed, I can also say it's good as well. But a lot of the time, they are borderline terribad. Fairy Tail, Gintama, Naruto, Bleach and of course, One Piece, all had horrible dubs with One Piece being the worst. I appreciate a good dub, but they lack the emotion that the Japanese Seiyuu bring to the table. You can see that the Japanese Seiyuu try their best at showing the character for who they are. With the English Dubs though, it feels very lackluster compared to the Japanese. If only they were like the Final Fantasy dubbings, which usually end up being better than the original Japanese voice-overs. ![]() |

Did you check Tidus' Japanese voice? That horrible laugh was still as horrible. But yeah, sometimes they fuck it up, but they get it right more than with anime. ![]() |

Sad how most of the time I state this I get chastised for not listening to Japanese-made products in my native language. Dubs must have to be liked for them, and a thing I've noticed is that most dub elitists are English speakers who are unwilling to accept the fact that there are other languages as well. This is what makes me dislike dubs in return. I also really love the Japanese language and I think it fits the cultural aspect of anime better, regardless of what it is. Please ignore what you don't like instead of attempting to disrupt it |

I don't think I've ever ran into a Dub that took so much away from an Anime until now... Just recently watched Ichigo Mashimaro/Strawberry Marshmallow, Started watching it in English and then Anna comes into the picture.. Nope, That show looses A LOT in English. Japanese Only. |

I've never had a problem with dubs. I actually like some Dubs better than Japanese subs. But sometimes I feel like some characters that have a horrible voice, messes the whole show up for me. But I think dubs have gotten better over time. |

I don't have any problems with dubs, in fact I usually prefer them, maybe it's just me, but I like to watch stuff in my first language which is English. I'll watch subbed anime, but if I can find the dub I always prefer it. |

it is an issue of elitism in the fandom they feel that subs makes you a better fan. even though that is preposterous. also there is people seeing the original version first then seeing the dubs later and expecting it to be 100% the same which again is crazy. english in japanese are 2 very different languages that have terms and sayings that are not in the other one so they will always be different and that sometimes makes it better and sometimes makes it worse. i personally think that the vast majority of anime that take place outside japan are better in english by that i mean cowboy bebop, baccano, black butler etc just because it just doesnt make sense why they are speaking japanese in like the UK or something. |

As someone who's lucky enough to understand both languages, I'll break it down for some people why I don't like dubs. - In general, Japan has a bigger industry for anime voice acting. Not to mention that many Japanese animes use both men and women for male characters. Therefor, simply more and better voice actors to choose from. Not to mention many of them are more experienced. - The biggest factor isn't the dub itself, but the script. Because it's translated from Japanese to English (or any other language), the script will naturally focus on getting the translations right. So the script ends up with less focus on HOW the script sounds, and how it flows. Dubs often sound cheesy and the script sounds unnatural (doesn't sound like the characters are talking, but rather reading something from a book. |
