I only watched 135 eps of the original Naruto, then moved onto Shippuuden (which I'm practically current with, only a little behind). I feel like I missed nothing important. I didn't even know that 220 had something "important" until I read this thread today. Although now I may go back to see what exactly that is.
Anyways, I'm just saying that I would be fine with recommending to someone that they watch the first 135 eps and just move on to Shippuuden. I watched all of the filler that was in those 135 eps, but I would not say it's necessary to watch that, either.

If you stopped at 135, then naruto is still in the village correct? If you go directly into shippuuden, it shows naruto coming back after 2 in a half years of training. To some that really is nothing to be worried over but its a very slight plot hole. 220 shows the actual departure of naruto as he says his good buys to konoho and his friends and also raises fists in the air and as he is looking at the 4ths statue, says "please watch me" which is kind of memorable moment from the manga.

141 and 142 are actually a connection to the 2nd half of 220, where it shows after the battle with sasuske, everyone begins training with their jounin teachers and sakura's first training about medical ninjutsu begins, but that part is very very subtle and yes can definitively be skipped. But it is in the manga.

This is basically the info that you missed, really not that much

But if you have to watch any of them, 220 is the more important.

Not really,it's your decision,I did the same thing kinda,i finished 210 out of 220,honestly most of the naruto episodes are just fillers, about the other ninja's life,ex tenten, lee, sakura, etc,it doesn't really focus on shippuden. But as long as you watch most of the naruto episodes,You should have a good enough understanding of Shippuden.

You have not missed anything except 85 filler episodes and some minutes of episode 220 that are canon for the story.
People, not you, sometimes is scared to watch 200 episodes, but it's just 135, even less skipping the fillers in Karpman's list.

watch the first season but stop when the mass of fillers start, unfortunately i decided to waste so much time watching them, not worth it, but then i think the last one had some original, but have a look online there are a few people with lists saying the fillers. but i agree shippunden is a lot better, but naruto is quite good as well, if you watch the first it will make you apriceate the second one a lot more, you can't really skip out on all the story

Like everyone says, skip 136 to 219 if you don't want any filler and watch the last 15 or so min of 220 to get that full "resolution" of part 1 of the manga.

Personally though, i liked some of the fillers, some of the arcs were pretty decent and its the last time you get a chance to see some of the characters in action, cause once you hit shippuuden, its like some of them don't exist any more. "I am looking at you tenten."

Though i guess currently kishimoto is aiming to fix that in the most current arc.

Would certainly help to grasp the story, you could probably skip through the fillers if you wanted.

The first part (Naruto) is important to watch imo because, well simply because that's when it all begins and the core plot from the first part will be important to know before starting with Shippuuden. Watch Naruto but skipp all the filler. No point in watching those.

What u could do is read a summary on Naruto(the first one), look up a back story or something of a few characters and then start Naruto Shippuden

I want to watch Naruto but all my friends say shippuden is way better. but it's a sequel.. so should I just skip naruto (First one) and start shippuden or will I miss out on the story and other stuff? :S
I was literally the same as you 2 weeks ago when I heard Naruto was ending. I thought about skipping Naruto but honestly, don't. Skip the filler episodes, all of them. It's way less episodes than you think, and the canon episodes are actually really good imo. I'm now on Shippuden Ep 19.
