Yui's so perfect, why do i have to keep seeing Yuuya on screen so much? Sure, he got his act together by the end of episode, but he still annoys the hell out of me just by being there.

Yuuya's finally getting the hang of the Japanese type TSF. Can't believe Yui would just fight them with real weapons like that. Is she really that hard on Yuuya just because of her traumatic past?

Also, Tarisa in a cat maid outfit! :D

Yeah I had a feeling Inia (and probably Cryska were a leftover of Alternative III. Starting to become more and more apparent. Especially that doll Inia has, reminds me of evil Usa-chan. And the fact that they're in a Russian research facility to boot.

Yui's Takemikazuchi is rather cool. Really feels like something a noble princess would use.

Hopefully Yuuya continues his character development in episode 6, so I don't have to be so annoyed every time he appears on screen. On the bright side, the Yuuya-Yui arguements will cease to exist. (I hope)

I'm starting to think they pulled off the fight badly in the one way that they didn't demonstrate Yui's power before deliberately showing her lowering her guard. All we got was 10 seconds of Tarisa-VG-Stella ownage (Though Tarisa getting flipped over and owned totally made the entire episode) and a one-liner of Yuuya knowing Yui isn't fighting at her full power. Blink-and-miss and you'll think Yui was fighting seriously and hence is weak, when it is not true.

And for those defending Yuuya, hopefully you remember that Yuuya is a specialised Test Pilot, and not a solider (he could be one, but having never seen the actual battlefield, doesn't qualify compared to everyone else in XFJ save for Vincent.) It is Yuuya's job to adapt to the Shiranui, and it has been proven that he can do it fast (For starters, he's the best America has to offer. And Yui knows that from the speed in which is grasped the basic controls of the Shiranui during her shower scene.) So any arguement that Yui is pushing Yuuya too hard and that its impossible for him to adapt this fast is actually one big fat lie Yuuya cooked up by himself. (I mean look, when his ego was threatened to be skinned alive by losing to Yui, a Japanese, suddenly he's able to adapt to the Shiranui.)

Yui knew that she had to threaten Yuuya's ego to get him moving. She did everything on purpose.

As much as some of you dislike Yuuya's attitude, many of us also can't stand Yui. It goes both ways cause people don't like bitchy characters. Especially when many feel there are better methods to getting closer to him. Personally, I feel she could have let her skill do the talking, and showed him from the beginning, but she took the immature route and went back and forth, making them both look hardheaded. The American friend is absolutely correct, they are A LOT alike, whether they want to admit it or not. So if both of them warm up and develop their character, it will be good for both. Personally though, I love Yuuya's cockyness. Too many shows where the main character is a bitch, useless and just utterly pathetic (i.e. no balls). Yuuya's challenging her, and I love it.

As for the sword fight, it doesn't matter if she might be stronger, its just like a Karate match imo. Even if the person who was downed is better, they were still downed. So of course Yuuya fans will enjoy that. Cause lets be honest, if Yui knocked him on his ass (which I honestly was expecting), the Yui fans would have been like "finally" and loving it.

And Yuuya > Yui :P

WTF is with people and their arguments whether is Yuuya or Yui better? Are you even trying to see into them or do you just believe everything they say has no other reason? They're both in the wrong and yet none of them is. Yuuya clearly has trouble accepting his Japanese origins, instead of accepting them, he fights them. That's why he constantly had trouble with his TSF. If you think about his complaints, they could be summed up in them being made in Japanese style not American. He never said anything specific, he was just complaining that it's junk because he can't control them. Was he being a jerk? Yes. Was it understandable because of his past. Yes. Was he doing that on purpose? No. About Yui. Yuuya was deaf to any explanation and help on how to control them (since his issues were with himself not really with the TSF) so she decided to speak to him the same way he was speaking to her. On top, she anted to provoke him to be better and stop complaining. Did it work? Yes. Was it the only way? Most likely no. Is it understandable since he was insulting (for no reason) what she was working with even since she was young? Yes.
Is it alright hat someone with lower rank and experience yells at her? No. Is being a spoiled jerk in time of war alright? No. Is being a bitch the best way to handle that? No.
They both handle their problems in a bad way, that's what makes them human but in the end they TOGETHER managed to solve them. So, did everything work in the end? Yes.

I actually see them equally wrong and equally justified at this point. He should have solved his problem outside of his job and she could have solved problem with him much "nicer" way. Either they would both do that or they both do what hey actually did. Any other way wouldn't solve anything. If she was nice to him hen he was acting like a spoiled brat, he wouldn't realise his mistakes. If she would be a bitch while he would try to solve it without yelling, it would demotivate him.

About this episode. After the first 2, this is the only episode I didn't hate. However, it was unbearably boring so not much of an improvement. At least i hope this episode solved Yuuya-Yui arguments, I'm getting sick of them. Half of the Earth is conquered by BETA and they waste their time with pointless arguing.

No hard feelings, but I'm going to continue defending Yui (I mean, differing opinions is what makes the forums exciting, as long as it remains within the context of the topic).

I'm not going to disagree that they're both hardheaded and bitchy. Both of their terrible attitudes arose from different experiences (Yui, the first two episodes explained everything, and for Yuuya, episode 4, with his childhood flashbacks.) So I'm going to put that terrible attitudes aside.

Its Yuuya's unprofessionalism that annoys me to no end. The XFJ project was to incorporate the best aspects of each country's TSF and enhance them, so that mankind has a fighting chance against the BETA.
The duty of a test pilot is to accumulate experience in each TSF and suggest improvements. Its practically their job. And what does Yuuya say? Fubuki/Shiranui is JUNK. He says that early on in episode 4, when he had barely any experience. And he said that simply because he hated the Japanese. (Had it been any other nation's TSF, he'll probably say 'I need more time to get used to the TSF' instead).

You know, if this wasn't a joint-nation project, Yuuya would have been fired from episode 4 already. You don't bring in your personal baggage to your professional work, especially when it concerns the survival of your entire species.

Sure, Yui was being a bitch by attacking Yuuya's ego ("You're a disgrace to the Japanese." "The best America can offer is worse than an Imperial Royal Guard Trainee."), but she only said that in response to Yuuya's attacks on her, stating that her country's TSFs are junk - which, if you take into context the entire BETA war, is insulting the entire country's defense systems.

Neither of them were right in their insults, but it was clear to me Yuuya was the first one that his personal baggage drag him down to that level. (Hell, it was already prevalent when they were introducing each other in episode 3, that Yuuya was offended by Yui's mere presence.)

They both have bad attitudes and communication skills, but Yuuya has worse personal baggage management skills. And sadly, Yui is the one that needs to keep it in check for him, because she's the superior. Considering her tragic past and her history of being in the millitary, she definitely isn't going to coax Yuuya nicely into changing his attitude. She took a long time with terrible techniques (to the point of having to fight him) to resolve the issue of her subordinate's attitude problems, but if you consider that they didn't even know each other until this project, it becomes more forgivable.

There's an saying (didn't bother checking where it came from) "Spare the rod, spoil the child". Yuuya's the spoilt kid, and Yui unfortunately is the parent. They both end up looking bitchy because they're both physically adults.

That's why I empathise with Yui on levels higher than Yuuya, and after you take battle experience into account, Yui > Yuuya. XD

I'll be honest and say that I'll be celebrating if Yui curbstomped Yuuya after he awakened his Yamato Damashii (so you're correct), but one's gotta start drawing the line before Yuuya fans declare that Yuuya > Yui in Japanese TSF control solely because of that fight, which obviously cannot be used to judge their levels as Yui lowered her guard.

Great episode, I'm liking this show so far but it could be much, much better if it was presented more seriously with less fan service and what not. I'm looking forward to more of this, it's still a lot of fun to watch.

Good episode with the princess showing that she is not all just talk.

By fighting Yuuya, she encouraged him on as a pilot and gave him confidence in his TSF and his abilities as well.

Chobi was really cute in this episode, and the boobs lady was awesome.

The Japanese Doll, Lt. Takamura, has outdone Chobi (Tarisa) for the worst character. There are so many things wrong with her, like her terrible attitude towards Yuuya Bridges, doesnt she know he is the American Top Gun?! If she was just a bit more understanding then she could be a bit decent. However that is the least of her sins
. She makes Chobi seem like shes at Macaroni's level. Yuuya was as impressive as always and I cant wait to see how his bond with 94 second turns out. Since he has just had his shower scene, I imagine he will only be going up from here in terms of emotions.

The oddest thing was that Natalies boobs seemed as big as Chobi's head, what even, only noticeable since they were all over her head.

That's what annoys me about the series so far, the American bashing and also the hate towards the Japanese from Bridges. To me...it just does not seem very realistic. They really need to take a vacation to America and see the melting pot.

All in all, decent episode it didn't piss me off as bad as Ep. 4 did.

Yeah, I just watched this anime last night and there is definitely something grating about the way the Japanese authors portray Americans and life in the American family and military. As if it's Japan that is a paragon of racial egalitarianism and the US that has a problem integrating other ethnicities.

Something about the premise of this entire series just smells disgustingly phony. Contrived.

I'm not in the US military myself but my dad is an engineer in the defense industry and naturally has a lot of contact with military personnel. Actually, my cousin-in-law is a Marine and both sides of the family can't wait for the expectant mother, mixed-race or not, doesn't matter. We're ethnically Taiwanese and I'm a second-generation American.

And I have a real hard time swallowing the Japanese racial critique and portrayal of America because I know a few things about how Japanese (and even Chinese) societies work.

Again, I can't quite put it into words quite yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to once I put my finger on it. Something really stinks about this series.

I just read this (a week late)

Yuuya’s attitude comes from many different factors, of which his hatred of the Japanese is just one piece. He has serious problems with authority, period. He’s been sent to Alaska precisely because his superiors know he’s a problem soldier, and want to wash their hands of him. At one point, when thinking about how he can get along better with Yui, he ruefully admits to himself that if he were capable of adjusting his attitude to please his superior officer, he wouldn’t have been sent to this dump to begin with. He’s probably not wrong when he says to Vincent that this transfer is something of a demotion. In fact, part of the reason he feels free to cop an attitude towards Yui is because, in his eyes, he can’t possibly be punished any further than he already has been.

As for Yui herself, her problem is that everything she sees and does is through a Japanese perspective. Not only does she live in an Imperial Japan that is surely heavy on nationalism, she belongs to an elite samurai lineage. That colors everything she does. She opposed Project XFJ to begin with, not wanting foreign input into a Japanese TSF – and she especially opposes having an American test pilot rather than a Japanese one. So she naturally latches onto Yuuya’s Japanese heritage, hoping to mold him into a “proper” Japanese pilot. She has absolutely no concept of the tolerance for other nations’ cultures and beliefs that must exist in a mixed-nation UN base. So it’s not really a surprise that nobody else seems to like her much. Yuuya quickly bonds with his fellow pilots in Argos Flight, but after a month on base, it doesn’t seem like Yui is friends with ANYBODY. I find that this quirk makes her a lot more likeable as a character. If everybody else simply backed her up and agreed with her, she would become very annoying very quickly, and the show itself would become unbearably preachy. What makes her tolerable is the fact that everybody else sees her as a huge pain, which helps make it clear that she’s not nearly as right as she seems to think she is.

Orginally from type94 (wordpress)

Doesn't change my side (I'm still pro-Yui this arc), but this explains why they're both idiots in the first place. One's a problem soldier, and the other is too proud.

Its quite obvious that she intentionally did let him win. Even Yuuya himself stated clearly that she could finish him off any moment she wished.

Besides, Takeru could master and go beyond possible on just mere Fubuki within few days of his first time piloting TSF ever, while that so-called ace could not even understand how to use one. And Isumi and Mana were better than Takeru, making Yuusha and that whole Alaska base mediocre pilots.

For me these episodes have been mediocre since ep 3. I understand the need for character development, but what's going on withe BETA?

I know that they won't be fighting the real BETA. At least not in this season, but the first two episodes were so great. =/

yui lost on purpose but can't want till we'll see her true skills ^^. anyway, they force yuuya to use a japanese tsf becouse it'a a project for setting the new japanese national tsf :|

i think people watch this anime only for boobs and blood ^^, through, this anime is based on a novel game :-w so i'm pretty sure the plot it's about human problems and emotions, yui and yuuya should go through these probplems with racism, grades, past problems etc, and both fall in love with eachother ^_^. but it'll take a bit, specialy yuuya it's a tough guy :)

I like how they showed how strong the BETA can be in the first two episodes since now the audience knows how terrifying they can be. In ML and MLA, the training felt more like games even though it really wasn't.

I kinda wanna see the scene (if there is one) in the VN where he finally ends up having hate sex with the Lieutenant. Also, the whole restaurant scene gave me a boner.

I just had to comment.
Yui is possibly one of the most annoying, idiotic and narrow-minded characters I've seen in years. She's so annoying it's seriously hampering my enjoyment to the point where I might drop the show if this continues. Especially if she's the one that's supposed to be "right" (not that I think Yuuya is without fault, but Yui is by far the bigger problem).
