This will take only a few clicks and you won't have to download the video through an annoying website. Its way easier than it seems!

Note: the browser to do this with is in Firefox (doesn't matter which version).

How to download off Youtube (including in high quality)
First install this add-on for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/download-youtube/?src=search

If you can't use that version, try another Youtube downloader:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=youtube&appver=13.0.1&platform=windows

You will need to restart Firefox after installing for the add-on be useable. Now just go to the Youtube video you want to download, and search for this button circled in red and click it:

Don't see that stuff outlined in red? You may not have installed the add-on, so try again and restart your browser, or it may be one of the rare videos that blocks it.

Download your video with the menu that pops up as an MP4 for the best quality. If you want to play the video on your computer, you may need to reformat the video file into another your computer can play, see the bottom of this post.

How to download online videos from websites other than Youtube
Use the Firefox add-on is Flashgot. Download it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashgot/

Once you install this you'll have to restart your browser. Now whenever you play a flash player online (doesn't matter what website, even Youtube) you will see this Flashgot icon in your Firefox browser. Its circled in red below in the example pic of my Firefox. It won't appear until the flash player video is started. Click it to start the download of the video to wherever your Firefox downloads go. The download will actually start once you close the page, and it doesn't matter if the video is loaded or not on your browser (if the video is loaded fully, when you close the page it will download in full immediately!).

The icon might not be visible at first, so open all your toolbars and check them to find what toolbar the icon is on! You can do this from Firefox view option. If you still don't see it, it might be a very rare video that blocks this add-on or you didn't install it at all, so try again and restart your browser.

A closer look in case you need it! I circled it in red!

The download will be in FLV. Look at the bottom of the post for ways to convert FLV into a more useable format.

Converting downloaded videos in flash and MP4 into more playable formats
There's a perfect FREE program for this: Format Factory. Download the latest version from the link below. It converts your video into whatever format your computer needs to play it, if it can't play MP4 or FLV. It will also cut videos down into what you'll need to extract the GIFs from. But don't use it for converting them into GIFs, it doesn't convert files to GIF well at all, but convert to everything else perfectly.

http://www.formatoz.com/

How to use it:
Use the visual examples below if you can't figure out how to convert the file with the program.

After you open the program, just drag the downloaded video into the program...

.. then (1) choose the file type, (2) click OK, and (3) hit start after that to convert the video into a format your computer can play. Use AVI or WMV if you don't know which file type to convert to, those are the most commonly useable on computers.

Check the GIF tutorial for more info on condensing it down if you are using the video for a GIF.

The converted file will go to the FFoutput folder, which you'll need to find on your computer. It will probably be in your My Documents folder. You can change the folder the converted files go to by going to the top of Format Factory and choosing Task -> Option -> Output Folder.
