THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
I received the August Bessatsu Shounen Magazine yesterday, only a couple of days after it was sent out, even though it went through Hong Kong on its way here. The cover is focused on “Joshiraku” again since that is the new Bessatsu manga that is being animated. But Sankarea still got a small image on the bottom right corner.

And Chapter 31 of Sankarea starts on page 276, running through page 313. The title is “Hitsuzen no Guuzen”, with the Japlish subtitle, “Warking Dead”. All-in-all, it was quite an enlightening and surprising chapter, with very dark undertones.

Spoilers below.....

The chapter doesn’t waste any time. It starts with Chihiro, Rea, and Darlene flying over the Caribbean, near Haiti, in a small twin-engine turboprop, heading towards a place that the Japanese Government doesn’t want its citizens to go to. Chihiro’s troubled thoughts are suddenly interrupted by an excited Rea who tells him that Babu has become excited as she holds what’s left of the cat up to the window. Rea says that it was a good idea to bring Babu along, and Chihiro thinks how distant he and Rea have been during the long trip.

Darlene starts to bug Chihiro, asking him if he has second thoughts about going to ZOMA. Chihiro lashes back that it is still all her fault that Babu was chopped up by her owl, accusing her of scheming the whole thing. But Darlene continues to remind Chihiro of what he has done as they prepare to land at the restricted island facility. Chihiro has to admit to himself that he is secretly interested in finding out just what ZOMA really is, particularly since he heard his grandfather’s story.

The plane lands, and then taxis into a hanger that is built into a hill, with the hanger door closing behind them. Darlene tells them to be quiet, and tells Chihiro not to leave Rea. Darlene steps up to a face-and-voice recognition system and gives her name. They get into an elevator, after which Darlene leads them through empty, somewhat run down corridors to a door which she enters with a pass code. Inside they see a dimly lit observation area and windows looking into brightly lit rooms full of zombies.

Rea starts to comment that there zombies are like her, when Chihiro yells out that he sees a zombie girl and runs down into the observation area and up to the window. The zombie girl, looking like a rather run down rocker-girl with a guitar, isn’t attractive, but Chihiro still finds her to be cool.

In the meanwhile, the scientists in the observation area all congregate around Rea, commenting upon what a great and beautiful sample she is. Chihiro sees this and runs back to push the scientists away from Rea, calling them perverts. Darlene comes over to tell Chihiro that he is the same as them.

At that point the Head of the facility comes over to quiet things down. The Head is a somewhat scarred woman who asks if Chihiro is the inventor of the zombie medicine. Darlene confirms this. The Head welcomes Chihiro and Rea to ZOMA and tells them that Darlene has already reported their reason for coming. Darlene, Chihiro and Rea then go to the Head’s office in order to not disturb the rest of the researchers.

Rea notices the similarity in last names between the Head and Darlene and asks if the Head is Darlene’s mother. Darlene turns her head away and with a despondent look upon her face, says instead that the Head is her Father. Rea and Chihiro are stunned.

The Head is quite pleased to meet Professor Boyle’s grandson. The Head comments that Boyles notes don’t have the exact formula and asks Chihiro how he got it. Chihiro replies that he came up with the formulation accidently. The researchers have been trying to get the right formula for the past eight years since Boyle left.

The Head then says it’s time for Rea’s medical examination. Chihiro is suspicious and asks what kind of examination. The Head explains that they have an exam for zombies that is analogous to an exam for living people, and that they will also fix up major physical damage.

Chihiro is still suspicious, and is about to see how Rea feels, when suddenly Chihiro is slammed to the floor by someone. Chihiro looks up and sees a little girl who is wearing a short tunic and mittens on her hands. This turns out to be ZOMA’s prized possession, a zombie girl called Rosalie.

Rosalie goes over to Chihiro and starts sucking on one of his hair “ears”. Chihiro thinks that is great. Rea comes over to try to get Rosalie to let go of Chihiro.

At this point, Darlene, who has been sullenly standing by the door, excuses herself to go back to her room. The Head orders her to be ready for a meeting in 30 minutes. After Darlene leaves the room she despondently thinks how her father didn’t even welcome her back.

I guess we won't be seeing Ranko (or is it Wanko?) anymore. I was starting to like her character quite a bit, a lot more than Rea anyways since Rea was kind of acting like a bit of jerk past 2 chapters.

Dalene's family is weird, she doesn't look her age and her dad looks like a woman.

Pretty decent chapter overall. I still think ZOMA are planning something, after which Dalene might do a rescue mission.

When that Zombie Loli bit him, that was one of the cutest things I've seen. XD I still can't stop laughing at Furuya's expression. XD

Woah, are you kidding me, is Salva really a guy, what's up with traps these past weeks?! Looks like he doesn't care that much about Darin.

As soon as he sees another zombie girl, Furuya forgets about Rea xD

I didn't expect to see a second zombie girl, but Rozarie looks like a really funny character, Rea might lose to her haha

Babu is so adorable, I hope they find a way to prevent him from entering the confused state.

What. The. ****? Dad?! No, I don't even want to know what the hell is going there. It's just wrong.

I guess we will be seeing a lot of zombgasm from Furuya now.

Rather than wondering whether Darin's dad had sex change or is a trap i wonder about his scars. I thought he was a zombie at first.

Furuya's reaction was hilarious when the little zombie "played" with him :D

and I guess that's what happened with Darlene's father: one day he went back and said Darlene from today, I'll be your father AND mother... ba dum tss

Ah, Haiti. The birthplace of the voodoo zombie legend. Or so it goes. Of course Chihiro simply can't just grab Rea and run away. Unless either one of them knows how to fly a plane, of course. So that's Darin's... father? And those scars... Well, Chihiro has scars too, but I wonder what's the story behind Salva's... effeminate appearance.

Chihiro's zombie girl complex is nearly out of control! ZOMA is the only place in the world where he can, in theory, create his own zombie girl harem. Rea getting angry at her de facto boyfriend here could be justified, though she only looks with surprise for now. Now why do I get the feeling that we might also be seeing Rea's father again soon?

I did not expect this... HAITI??? The shithole of the west hemisphere?? I guess it makes sense they would put it in a place like that..

in the beginning I thought "OH Darin, she is being her usual seductive self" when she leaned over to Furuya, looks like she is the secondary heroine now

I want to sayh WHAT???? when Darin said that was her father. "I AM YOUR FATHER!!" I imagined that scene in my head

Well, looks like we are going to get more into Darin's background, can't wait!!'

God Chihiro has really shown his Zombie necrophilia fetish in this chapter, his true self is revealed.
