Just how much anime is out there? Any MAL statistics?

During my random MAL user stalkings, I have come across a guy that happens to have 1300 days spent watching anime and 1500 days reading manga. That is almost 8 years of pure time. What scared me even more is, I did not recognize almost anything on his list nor shared any of the anime as most of his was really old. It shocked me how far and deep the history of anime actually goes.

It made me wonder - how much anime there actually is? I could not find any statistics on this site, like total runtime and amount of episodes accounting for every single anime in the database. Is there some information regarding this matter?

The most recently added anime to the database was this http://myanimelist.net/anime/14829/Fate/kaleid_liner_Prisma_Illya

Note the 14829 in the link. That's how many are in the DB.

As for manga this is the most recent

http://myanimelist.net/manga/40285/Sora_ga_Haiiro_dakara

So 40285

So 40285

So, the first anime in the database would be Cowboy Bebop?

How do you check the most recent added anime?

Instead of choosing from the drop down menu itself, just click the "anime" tab next to the "profile" tab.

Upcoming and recently added links are next to the alphabetical search. You can do that with the manga tab aswell.

but there are many many deleted anime on MAL, and also many entries missing, so I doubt that number is accurate.

Not to mention specials are also counted as unique entries. So I imagine it's a considerable amount lower.

MAL currently has 7263 anime and 20924 manga

http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=&limit=7260
http://myanimelist.net/topmanga.php?type=&limit=20910

Note, though, that there are a lot of things that are not included on MAL.

Yes, duplicate entries, but also people attempting to submit things like "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic", as well as things like Robotech which originally had their own entries, but were later merged with their Japanese parent series.

All judgement calls(Avatar/MLP have no influence on the accuracy of the MAL's anime count) which might mean there's going to be a margin of error but due to the amount of effort put into this site I'd wager it to be an accurate means of estimating how many unique anime titles have been made.

The authors of the anime encyklopedia made an estimation that 18 years worth of anime had been produced by the time of its release in 2001. I don't know if it's correct or not but it seems reasonable enough.

Even though there is nearly 15k anime listed, please be aware that the site lists both OVA's, Specials, and any other kind of shorts even on MAL seperately. Some series might have 3 seasons with multiple specials, a movie and a such which takes up like 10 of the count meter, apply that with a lot more series, that number isn't really 15k.

A example off the top of my head would be Shakugan no Shana. 3 seasons, 7 different specials, 1 ova and 1 movie. 12 out of those 15k anime are the same series.

Another example would be Detective Conan. Nearly 2~3 pages on MAL's search. 20 titles per page. That's 40+ of the count being just Detective Conan.

Am I the only one that doesnt believe it's even possible to see all of this? Even if he is Japanese? I doubt you can even find a lot of that anime listed nowadays.

I wouldn't rely on MAL for database statistics. Perhaps AniDB had a more accurate number since they usually put specials in with the original anime. I'm not positive though.

MAL will never archive every manga in the world there's millions of them, remember there are manga exclusive to magazines and newspapers as well as the web.

I am sure it's possible and there are people out there who completed that many series but most of the time it's usually either someone adding it to increase their days or a person that keeps anime on in the background while they do jobs/leave house/study etc.

I think you are talking about spacecowboy. He has a huge amount watched, but a good deal of his is hentai which are 1-3 episodes each. The person I was referring to has about 3500 titles. Yes,many are obscure, but they are out there and I have some of them. He has given me a short list and I've found all of them...it takes awhile, but there are sites where individuals hunt down that kind of stuff.

42% of my list are 1 Episodes [ thats movie in the main] According to MAL Graph
