Clannad = Best romance? lol no

Anyways lets say I watch something I totally think is a masterpiece in its genre, I'll still watch other shows in that genre, won't lose enjoyment but will probably be more strict with the scoring

No:) I still enjoy anime and manga a lot and I always look forward, maybe I'll soon watch or read something else that I consider as another 'masterpiece'

I read a post from someone a while ago that said something along the lines of "Without the bad, there is no good" - what I'm trying to say with that is in order to really say something is good/even a masterpiece one needs to have watched some shows that are possibly only average/below average.
Usually, there are always some good things (even if the anime is so bad that it is already funny - at least it's funny;) )

As for recommendations - I usually ask what genre they like and work from there. I'm not 'afraid' to recommend those I consider as a masterpiece - quite the opposite actually. But I usually only recommend series that are (in my opinion) worth their time.

Let me ask you something now, have you watched everything the word 'anime' offers that you think of yourself in a position to make something your 'masterpiece'? If I'm to answer, I'd say I haven't watched shit as of now; there are thousands and thousands of titles left for me to glare at to be able to call one a masterpiece. Thus, I don't rate anything 10/10.

I, of course, would recommend that masterpiece to others new to anime; if I ever find one, that is.

Also, you bring up a good point. Saying something is a "masterpiece" means that it is nothing left to anime. That is, there isn't anything new that could be made to top it. It would be the highest form of whatever. Anime changes over time, and so does tastes, so I guess saying that the greatest anime have already been made implies that it's all down hill in terms of quality. Or something like that, I don't know.

I disagree. To me a masterpiece is something that completely overwhelms me with a certain special and indescribable feeling. A masterpiece does not have to be untoppable or unmatchable. In theory there could be millions of them, and they would still all be masterpieces. There have perhaps been as many as 70 or 80 individual episodes that have left that special impression on me, and one which I experienced today is in no way superior or inferior to the first I ever encountered (the only possible difference to be drawn between them is how long they lasted, which isn't really fair, especially considering that in some cases I was broken out of that blissful state by someone else). Of course, an entire series that leaves that impression is a lot rarer than an individual episode, which is why I have so few 10 ratings.

Of course, others may have dfferent interpretations of what makes a masterpiece to them. But there is nothing about the term "masterpiece" which requires exclusivity, unparallelisability or even unbeatability.

Masterpieces is matter of taste. There are some who think Death Note is a masterpiece and I think "It has some good points, but why the hell did I have to watch it?". so, I can't really answer your question.

Watching masterpieces hasn't "ruined" anime for me per se, but it has made me more critical of it. For example, last year, I watched Steins;Gate and Madoka Magica...I consider them masterpieces. Now I'm watching anime trying to find something that can match them in recent success. So far, the CLOSEST anime I've seen this year that does is Another...but Another just couldn't quite capture the magic (no Madoka Magica pun intended) that those two series did.

Ok. I just looked at the anime count of all those that said yes to this question, and with ONE exception (the OP), every. single. one. of them. had less than 150 anime watched and most of them had less than 100!
I say we make a rule that unless you have seen 150+ anime, and tried out all genres (within reason, NO one is gonna get me to try yuri lol), you can't comment in this kind of topic.
To be truthful, I'm getting sick of seeing them!
Before you judge, get at least a sampling of all that it has to offer. I have 350+ in my watched list and I know I really haven't even scratched the surface!
My tactic to keep from getting burned out is to not watch an anime from the same genre I just tened another anime in.. unless it's an ongoing series.

Its all about your preferences. I agree with the fact that if an anime captivates me and I love it, then I will give it a 10, but there are animes that put some of the animes I first watched and thought of as 10s to a certain degree of shame when I rewatch them.

One grows with experiences, great works are a part of that.

In response to what Sisgood said,
I agree that people should try them all out, but there are people who are either new to the site (like me) that havent added all their animes, or are just too lazy to do so. You cant really look at the number and say they dont have enough experience.
Just because I dont take 3 days trying to remember all the animes I've seen just to add them to this site doesnt mean i dont know anime.

Not really, the only downside to masterpieces is how shit you feel when you don't like one of them.

Indeed.

Honestly for me it can go both ways. I tend to be more open when it comes to different genres. For example, in the Mecha genre i am set in stone atm with Code Geass and Gurren Lagann. With a genre like Harem however, I tend to be less strict. It all depends on what genre I am viewing.

I wouldn't say that it ruined my experience, but rather it has helped me point out flaws in other animes that I watch.

Of course not!
If I saw let's say the perfect romance it would totally not ruin any other romances for me. Tons of romance animes with completely different settings, plots and characters that diverge from the others which make it unique and different making my viewing experience a good one.

If every romance were literally a copy of a masterpiece then sure probably but most don't go as far as copy every little thing from another anime. Most are different!

It's easy to compliment someone that you'll never envy, but even easier to try and tear down someone who's better than you.

Clannad is nowhere near masterpiece. If you consider it a masterpiece it means you haven't watched enough dramas because it follows the typical plot except that it has the annoying school life anime part

Nope. I find that most "masterpieces" are overrated, thus the hidden gems are what you can always enjoy searching for.

that's funny because it's the opposite for me. i find that most masterpieces are hidden gems.

For some genres yes. Alot of these new animes are one hit wonders. You either like them or you don't. Alot of writers try too hard to compete with mangas/animes that already a large fanbase.

I dont find my experience gets ruined. i find most things enjoyable to watch as long as it has interesting characters to be honest, even if the story is quite generic or simple i find i can enjoy it (as long as the characters are semi decent and if its funny etc.)

We don't get a vote in a topic asking for opinion? and only because you throw a random number of series we have to see for our opinions to be listened?

I understand that if we watch more series, we get closer to the whole picture. But I think all the opinions are important.
