What show are you talking about? Though it applies to every show of course.

We can only "count" copies that get reported in one of the sales tracking services though, like Oricon (anime, manga, novels, music) and Media Create (games). So yes, if a release charts in a second week, it gets counted. If it doesn't, we can't count it because we don't know how much it sold.

Are the Thursday numbers out yet? Interested to see what kinda boost Nyaruko got 2nd week.

I've been periodically checking but it's not up on livedoor yet. Could be a couple more hours still, though it's often up by noon EST.

That Amazon/Aniplex dispute might kill Dog Days' sales, because it will up the price.

At some point, Aniplex has got to give. Amazon isn't going to give into some anime company, they're too big to care about Aniplex.

The price difference with other online retailers isn't too terribly big if you live in Japan and are getting free S&H. I do expect it to have some impact, though it is worth noting that season one's sales were majorly underestimated by Stalker for both formats and every volume, which might imply Amazon was a comparatively small chunk of the sales for Dog Days than for other shows.

As for Aniplex giving in, we'll see... this has been going on an absolutely insane length of time. I never could have imagined in a worst case scenario that three months later there would be no end in sight. If Aniplex are willing to separate from with Amazon for this long, then either 1) Amazon was just screwing them that hard, or 2) they're making up the sales through other ways over time, just a bit more slowly and perhaps at smaller stores not tracked by Oricon.

I'm going at this season assuming I have to import DD' from HMV, as much as that sucks. I have no faith anymore that the issue will be resolved for this season.

Glad to se Persona 4 and Highschool DxD doing good, and even Bleach is selling something, that's nice

Not all of the shows are selling *that* well but it's good enough. Quite satisfied to be honest.

lul... Kyoani's Hyouka isn't selling

that's 2 slumps in a row... Are they going to make something that sells(COUGH HARUHI SEASON 3 COUGH) or what?

On what planet is ~8k (closer to 9k with second week sales probably) a slump? Certainly not Earth. It had the highest first week sales of the season, albeit not in the busiest season.

Comparing everything they do to blockbuster 20k+ sellers is utterly ridiculous. Most studios would be glad for 8-9k, and any publisher would kill for the immense boost the anime has given to sales of the original novels.

With Hyoukas budget, I can't imagine they are making massive profit from the disc sales though. Its still a success, but most of it likely comes from the LN sales boosts instead of the actual disc sales.

Wow, thats too bad. Very little chance Sankarea ever gets a sequel now.

Sure, but I didn't claim it was making massive profits or anything. It's just this "OMG it failed so bad" attitude that is so strange and unsubstantiated.

Plus it's another expensive Kadokawa release, so if it averages like 7k or so in the end that's worth like ~9k of a much cheaper 8 disc release.

First press of what in particular? Well, I suppose it's never bad. Presumably they printed an amount that wasn't going to put them really deeply in the red if it sold through, and if they sold all of that, presumably it met expectations.

I suppose there could be a situation where preorders were so bad they gave the series up for dead and only printed the minimum requested, and expected a big loss. Then there was more demand, but it's possible the excess demand still isn't enough to make it a success.

But by and large "oh hey people want to buy more than we planned on making" is not a bad sign.

As jmal said, 8k is pretty damn good.

Only 95 anime since 2000 have ever sold 10k+. Consider how much anime has released since then.

If selling below 10k is considered a slump or bad in anyway, there wouldn't be as much anime that we see today and we wouldn't see so many season 2's since most anime sell under 10k.

The real money-maker is boost in manga/LN/VN sales thanks to the anime. That and merchandise. From what I've read, K-ON sold 28 billion yen in merchandise. That's $360 million. Far more than what KyoAni got from BD/DVD sales.

So yea, BD/dvd sales aren't indicative of success or failure. Chihayafuru is a good example of this. It barely sold 2.5k yet it's getting a season 2.
