I can't help but grip arm whenever the alarm went off in the TSF. Fucking animated BETA. Didn't really expect them to be animated since this was supposed to be a sidestory set in Alaska, but I am very satisfied with how they did it.

EDIT: DAT TAKEMIKAZUCHI

It's good that they didn't drag it on with the girls dying, now the main story's starting with Yui going to Alaska.
After 1st not-so-good episode i didn't expect this would be so much better, we've had some action, some suffering and unfortunately, censors. BETA CGI looks good, i'm looking forward to next battles.
I would like to know who was piloting that Takemikazuchi by the end, it looked so OP. But where did all the Soldier class BETA go when it appeared? They seemed to be close but only Warrior class started attacking it.

Also i may be twisted, but that commander dying right after saying the lasers won't get them in current position almost made ma laugh out loud.

Half-assed, they just took some scenes from the first episode, it was actually kinda embarassing. Just another thing that makes me think the budget on this anime wasn´t what the producers wanted.
I expected blood and gore accompanied by a feeling of utter hopelessness. Ended up with choking on my soda suppressing my "WTF" feelings.

Finally it feels just a bit like Muv Luv Alt. Except still nowhere as gripping because in MLA you really feel it when someone dies. But its the second episode and they didn't spend time developing those characters. So it is to be expected. They needed to do something to set the tone of the world. Now its time to see how well they do character development.

seem this show may fulfill some of its potential afterall :)

I wonder who the pilot of the Takemikazuchi was because the way he/she used the sword was epic

sad, how this tends to happen in wars and stuff..

aside from that seems good so far, so might keep watching

felt kinda bad though, Izumi died, and so did the other girl.. (I would have shot her though... its better then staying alive and then being eaten....)

I was worried that as a sidestory it was gonna be filled with just mock battles and wouldnt show us the despair of war.....boy was I wrong.

Its good to finally see BETA in anime form and it seems they are even going to show us a CHOMP scene in the BDs...good becuase I wasnt prepared, the moment soldier classes appeared PTSD started again....

Great episode. Wish they didn't have to censor so much but oh well, makes it all more sweeter when the Blu ray lands in September. Looking forward to seeing the main cast finally introduced next week.

Also, whats up with this shitty 6.99 score?

Well, they didn't hold back on the blood and gore. Definitely an anime not for weak and squeamish. Even with the censors, it was still pretty nasty. Wondering how much they will reveal in the disc release.

This episode revealed that Takamura is the only character we should be concerned about. However, all we receive is indirect characterization about Takamura. What Takamura is not is:

1) The girl who flies too high after getting high on her first kill.
2) The girl who runs out of ammo and closes her eyes as a BETA approaches, only to be saved by Takamura.
3) The girl who starts bragging about surviving for eight minutes, only to get broken the very next second.
4) The stubborn men (first we have seen pilot the mecha) who try to be valiant in a hopeless cause or turn clueless without a captain.
5) Definitely not the annoying girl who wants revenge for boyfriend and freaks out after every small threat.
6) Most importantly, not the cool-headed girl who asks for Takamura to take over after the fall of their commander and asks Takamura to shoot her before being eaten by the BETA.

Maybe I am giving the episode too much credit, but the only meaningful direct characterization of Takamura is the hospital scene, when she starts crying at the sight of a baby crying.

So what have I learned about our main character, Takamura? Her actions are very mechanical, like those of a solider's, except when she has to kill the cool-headed girl. Soldiers, not out of disrespect, are usually boring characters, but its seems Takamura has experienced an epiphany concerning death, changing her characterization as the perfect soldier to, hopefully, something more human in the upcoming episodes.

Now, was this the best way to characterize Takamura? Because this series has to concern itself with world-building and mecha scenes (like E7 AO), I wouldn't harass this series for taking it slow with its characters, and even its plot (unless it turns out to be a 12 episode series, cutting everything short). So far, not bad, but also not amazing. Therefore, this series has its work cut out if it decides to take advantage of its premise. I'm most fascinated with the concept of BETA eating humans.

Well they definitely got the horror/PTSD stuff in here, which is a good sign that this is going to be serious like the Alternative proper and not straight-up fanservice for the duration. The only thing I'm curious about is where the story will actually go from here since I have no clue what happens in the Total Eclipse side of things.

Also, seeing animated BETA finally made me super happy.

This show turned out to be better than I first expected. There are mechas, and there's blood and there are these girls..
I knew that all of them will die in the end, except for Yui, not because she's the main heroine, but because she was a lot more responsible and serious than the rest of them.
I also knew that Yui will be saved in the last moment by someone. Though I expected to see the pilot of that blue mecha.

Definitely better than the first episode.

I haven't played any of the VNs for Muv Luv, but I feel that they could have just done this backstory in an OVA and instead could have just started in the present.

Very promising, ep 1 was a good start (with the calm-before-storm at training school setting, I took it as a hint that shit would hit the fan sooner rather than later and was glad to end up correctly) and ep 2 nicely concluded this introduction. 5/5 for this one.

As to whom will hate/love it, it's quite simple. Don't like action/mech/gore/seinen: don't even bother. Out of those I'm personally not a fan of mecha but ended up enjoying those scenes quite well (probably due to the BETAs and inside interior of the mech's more than any other aspects), so non-targeted audiences should still see this anime doing a good job. Could be a good title to experiment with a new genre.
Muv-Luv had been on my to-read VNs list for too long, I might finally bother thanks to the anime.

Edit: thinking back to it, biggest dissatisfaction with this would be how they spoil too much themselves, ex: >glasses girl suddenly mentioning how BETA eat people, no way you can't see where this is going. I'd have enjoyed seeing it out of nowhere a lot more. Only times knowing in advance what will happen to concerned person is when it's a psychopath tells said person how he'll torture him/her, it really is the only case.
For that eating part, I guess the studio might have felt forced to do so in case public companies try to sue them for showing more gruesome things than a girl-running-late-for-school-with-a-toast-in-her-mouth (on that note: hopefully blu-rays won't be so dark/blacked out); they can just say 'said-character hints it well enough, don't blame us! It should have been evident to skip the next scene'.

Loved it. I thought the first ep was already great (watched it again), but the second one was even better.
Great introduction-arc, nice way to learn about Yui´s past and personality at the beginning.
And man does she look hot with long hair. All those girls that died were just "minor" characters, they were only important to show why Yui is the person who she will be in the upcoming episodes.

Did I already mention that she looks hot?

Actually they want people to do that. They put in the spoiler
commercials of bringing it back for sales. If so then a translation is expected but I am hoping the game can get imported to PC. I would love to beat them BETA myself after this shit and few games out there can = to the alien variations of this series and grotesque. It seems almost that some design look like in Aliens movies except they are from the designs H.R. Jiger whom loads never were used in the Aliens movies.

Perhaps the creator was a fan of his works?

Hot damn. So Nasty.

My stomach felt it just went up a bit at the sight of cute girls getting eaten by grotesque creatures. I already expected this when I watch a few scenes of MLA on youtube. Thought, I already expect this scenes and that where just gonna count who'll survive. For once, I appreciate the censors here.

Not saying I hate the series. My feelings are mixed. The other half is saying to stay away while the other is wants more. Though I have to warn myself that I shouldn't get attach to the characters right away.

I'll just watch this once the series is complete.

Or maybe some people can't stand shitty plot, dialogue, and characters.

It's on the same level as "Starship Trooper" was. It's soo bad that it's comical. Funny thing is, "Starship Troopers" meant for their movie to have a level of self-deprecation to induce humor. The Sad part is, I think Muv Luv was trying to be serious.

I was waiting for someone to go "I need a corporal. You're it, until you're dead or I find someone better."

The world setting is where Most of the mainland is wiped out already (India and China combined already contains 1/3 of the worlds population) so there are only 1 billion left on the planet. Japan became the frontlines after the Korean Peninsula fell, so conscripting women and girls became a priority due to the high casualty rate.

Nah, what's carrying this show is the fan base, and to a lesser extent the newcomers. The show is currently the second most pre-ordered show this season, under Horizon.

And no, don't expect SAO to out sell this. I mean hey it's possible but if you know anything about sales and Japanese taste than you would know that this is right up their alley.

It's because the fanbase most likely just want to throw the money so they could see a properly animated muv luv original trilogy (or another warm up side stories). Just look at the budget that they have, it's painfully obvious that this show has a very low budget (in contrast to what they expect).

But well, with that budget, this episode still could portrait the fearsome BETA in action, and a good glimpse of Takemikazuchi. 4/5, and now into the main story.
