It's becoming harder to find shows I like and now most of the time I do it by looking at what others rate as high on their lists. I have trouble finding people with high compatibility and can only find them by clicking on profiles i see in the forums.

Is there a better way to do this?

There was once an option to find users with high compatibility but it has been removed because it was too taxing for the servers. There's a userscript which basically does the same thing but since this is also taxing and some users already had issues with it I don't think it's a good idea do distribute it further.

There are lots of other ways to find anime, for example

- reading reviews and recommendations
- using the recommendations board (make the topic as precise as possible to get what you want)
- browsing the top list
- using clubs that are focused on recommendations
- talking with other people about shows they like and why they like it

Ratings are often totally subjective and a high compatibility with someone doesn't necessarily mean that you always agree, especially when you haven't seen many series a high compatibility might only be a coincidence. Try getting some (personal) recommendations with the methods I listed above, I'm sure you will find many good series.

The rating is pretty meaningless anyway. Just browser through the recomendations of your favourite anime. For example: http://myanimelist.net/anime/1575/Code_Geass:_Hangyaku_no_Lelouch/userrecs
