So many franchises seem to love recap movies for some reason.
It's easier to attract new people by recap than showing story where you need to know series to understand it all.
Still in this case it's possible to make some nice looking story where you don't need to know what was happening before (with some bonuses for those who have seen it).
Probably the most boring way you could spend an hour and a half to two hours besides watching paint dry or watching grass grow. Actually i think those would be more entertaining than this will be, judging by the anime of course.
More Mouretsu Pirates is always better. I still want a sequel, and hope this doesn't cut off that possibility, but FUCK YES now I still have a reason to live. This is the best show of 2012 so far and will probably stay #1 for me.

Sales are pretty good. Not massive, but a solid hit around 7k, better than most shows. Also, whatever you've heard about it's "rating" means nothing.
Yeah I liked Mouretsu at first, but it never took itself seriously and it was filled with boring episodes with the yacht club (who I could care less about), supposedly it gets better but after half the series it FINALLY got serious? I'm not sure I'll watch, though I loved the director's other series (Lagrange) a lot more and didn't have the same problems Pirates had.

It depends on what you're expecting from the show. If you're expecting constant action every episode then you will be disappointed. This show has a purposely laid back feeling to it, though there are times when things get a little intense. I think a lot of people are looking at this show the wrong way. It's not a smash hit...but it definitely isn't awful.

Not so bad... But I watched some episodes and found very boring.
It seemed to me that Mouretsu is the kind of show that doesn't know if wants to be a funny space adventure or a moe-in-space show. And the characters seemed pretty uninteresting; Marika was somewhat likeable at first, but quickly fell onto the unrealistic-perfect-waifu kind.
"Like this too we met in a dirty and ugly world; Thank you for this miracle."
Mouretsu knows exactly what it wants to be, and it's not just one thing. And it balances its various roles perfectly. That's the whole thrust of Marika's character arc: balancing pirating with still being a student, and of course confronting the choice she's going to have to make when she graduates.
And Marika is hands down the best character of this year. She's alpha as fuck and just incredibly likeable to boot. Amazing job by Komatsu Mikako as well. I couldn't ask for anything better.
