I see a lot of recent thread about powerful protagonists at the beginning but I'm including romance in here as well. Can be anime/manga/novel/whatever. MUST be MALE protagonist that's OP.

Really simple: from the beginning the MALE character is OP as ****. I dont' care if he HIDES it, but he MUST BE AWARE of his powers at the beginning. I don't want no journey to discover his powers crap. I want him, at the beginning, to be badass and the most feared character in the whole thing. Also, if there needs to be a catalyst to unlock his powers, I want him to be able to use it at his will. I.E. I don't want his "full potential" to be triggered by someone dying or w/e, I want him to be badass whenever he wants.

Examples: Hellsing, Noblesse, Kaze no Stigma, etc.

Also, I want romance. Preferably no harem, but depending on how many responses I get I might lift this. Pure romance would be great. Kaze no Stigma is the closest one to what I've liked, but the anime closing romance wise is completey unsatisfactory.

Can be anime/manga/novel/anything. PREFERABLY completed or LONG chapters. I don't want like a 10 chapter manga or something :/.

Ty in advance!

EDIT: my MAL list is not updated at ALL. IF you have anything at all that fits what i said please post it. Also, good artwork is preferred. I don't want 1990's art unless the anime/manga is really good. OF course I would prefer that the higher rating the better (its always a bad feeling when an anime fits everything you want, then turns out to suck :/)

Second Edit: I forget to mention that I want mostly action stuff. Like Unbalance X Unbalance and Kaichou wa Maid are not what I"m looking for. Yes the men are tough, but its more of a clever thing. I want a more battle/action type of thing + romance. Like I don't mind if the guy's clever or a genius, but more action type please ty! :)

Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu sort of fits the bill. The protagonist is considered powerful even without his 'trigger' form, but once he activates that then... then game over.

The story is great, too. Don't let the first episode or two fool you.

BTW: There's an anime series and a light novel. The light novel isn't translated much, and the ending of the anime doesn't end the series. The first three novels of the sequel to the first series (which aren't fully translated -- there's like 2/11 novels done).
There's also a manga, I think, but I don't know much about that.

Anime: Chrome Shelled Regios. Protagonist is way OP and a complete badass. Some romance. Also, Darker than Black. Great anime with strong main but almost no romance.

edit: Manga: Id has OP protagonist and romance later on. So does Vagabond. Both have plenty of action and epic moments. The Legend of Maian also kind of fits the bill.

I'm currently reading chrome shelled regios and it is very close to what I want, thank you! Yeah I do wish there was more romance though :/

I've already read Vagabond. The fact that it gets updated...never :P turns me off a bit and the lack of romance is depressing (seriously there is no development at all). Other than that, as for the main character he is exactly what I'm looking for

I'm going to try Id and Legend of Maian. Will probably skip out on Darker than Black if its lacking romance and I guess Densetsu as well if it doesn't fit my criterias 0_O

more suggestions please!

Well Darker Than Black is well worth watching, atleast the first season
Denetsu no Yuusha Denetsu has a pretty shit ending, as well as his power only gets triggered by friends dying and stuff like that, only happens twice in the series as well, does have some romnce though

Rurouni Kenshin is pretty perfect for what you want. Romance, super-strong main character. It IS a 90's series but it's a classic so I would definitely check it out. Also, of course, lots of action. Only issue is the anime never technically was finished and NO, before anyone says this- The ending displayed in Samurai X IS NOT THE ENDING TO KENSHIN. Go read the manga. Also, the creator of Kenshin HAAATES Samurai X. Just wanna throw that out there. It isn't cannon.

Darker than Black is fantastic, but doesn't have a lot of romance at all.

I would also give Basilisk a try. Heavy on the romance, action, and the main character is very strong.

i've seen rurouni kenshin and hidan no aria

So here's my new to watch/read list:

Going through chrome shelled regios now
Basilisk
Id
Legend of Maian
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari
Utawarerumono

I can already tell I"ll finish the manga (basilisk, id, legend of maian) in like 2 days :P

I'm hesitant on Isekai no seikishi monogatari just cause of harem (which I really really despise :( ).

Anyways keep more coming please :).

I do prefer manga > anime (because i read manga much quicker and i hate not being able to finish something in one day or having to stop in between), but thanks for the great suggestions so far

You're such a hater. The ending isn't shit, it's incomplete. And just because he doesn't pull out his rage-power doesn't mean he's weak. He was called the strongest magician in Roland even without that.

Lol so now I'm a hater? I thought the anime had high potential but too bad it had a shit ending. Did I call him weak? no, unlike you I read what the op said: "I want him to be able to use it at his will. I.E. Densetsu no Yuusha, Darker than black, Chrome Shelled Regios(highly suggest), not many other's fit this, but it is a awesome category, I love anime like that... Heroic Age maybe? and ATM I'm watching pumpkin scissors and the dude is pretty much unstoppable on that, can't think of much else..

Ah, well, my bad. Completely discrediting a series because an ending isn't good enough isn't necessary, in any case, especially when there is a written sequel.
I felt there was a good enough lid put on it.

I read what he said, too. And he can use his full potential, of the Alpha Stigma, at least. That rage form isn't really him... that's his "losing" control. The anime might not portray it well enough, but I'm under the impression that he is strong, even when he's not blowing apart mountains.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom - Zwei + Ein ...enough said.

the first few episodes have to do with the male becoming strong. only the first few. but then he becomes the best assassin in the world. also this isnt your typical romantic story, these assassins have their brains - washed. their mind is totally fucked, its more about how they overcome this together, learn from each other, and care for each other. if you're looking for the regular lovey- dovey shit. then dont bother watching.

Sword Art Online (the light novel, not the manga) is kind of what you're looking for.
-Protagonist is awesome and strong. (not at the very beginning, but it doesn't take long at all. trust me, it's really quick.)
-Contains romance
-Lots of content and extra volumes + side stories

It's ranked #7 on this site at the moment, and I'm sure it's going to rise now that the anime is out. I recommend you try it. Really picks up about 6 chapters in. You can read it on baka-tsuki.

This is basicly what you're looking for the male protagist starts off weak (can't even fight off a little kid) but after that becomes stronger by fighting enemys now the antagonist change a lot but they are all mal (i think) but the last one "the strongest is mal (i'm sure).
anyway this is a very good long anime (about 50 episodes i think) but it's very entertaining .
