Firstly i apologise if this thread has been done to death, but i did search the forums and couldnt find a thread similar/identical to this. Ok so post your favourite Romance anime. I never used to be a fan of any film, series or anime that was romance based. But my opinion has changed recently.

For me the best ones so far have been

Toradora
True Tears
Planetes
b gata h kei
5 Centimeters per Second
Bakemonogatari
Spice and Wolf

In order of favourite at the top. They can be any form of romance anime, be it ecchi, comedy, fantasy, serious etc.

Also any points / opinions/ things you like/ dont like about the genre as a whole

For me i would say

likes=

-when you find a good romance anime it leaves you feeling things that you usually don't experience when watching other genres. I would say that they have an emotional impact that is hard to find in other anime series that don't have a romance theme running through them.

Dislikes =

- Loli and incest themes. It seems that romance has a lot of them ( well it is to be expected) I think that these can somewhat be put aside based on the quality of the anime but at the same time, it is a genre which has made my stomach churn more than any other.

- It is VERY hard to find a good romance anime. Espeically with all the ecchi bollocks mixed in. You get the rare ecchi romance like B gata h kei which breaks the mould and is actually good, but they are so few and far between its a bit disheartening sometimes.

Remember these are personal opinions on what i like / dislike and of course i dont expect everyone to agree with me/ i dont expect to agree with everyone who posts. Try and keep it as pleasant as possible, debate is encouraged, but no flaming. ( my thread my rules :p)

One last thing try to keep your list between 5-10 long!

Happy posting everyone!

In order:
1) Kare Kano
2) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
3) Kaichou wa Maid-sama
4) Romeo x Juliet
5) Kimi ni Todoke (1st season only)

Likes

- Depending on the characters or how well the romance aspect plays out, low-rated romances can often be enjoyable. For example: sola, Candy Boy, Ginban Kaleidoscope, Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, and plenty of others.

- The chemistry and friendship between characters usually found in romances.

Dislikes

- The silly comedy that is usually associated with romances, i.e. "rom-com". I'm more of a fan of serious and pure romance titles, like my top five above.

- In harems, the guy tends to be either dull, retarded, or perverted.

1, 3 and 5 are all on my list to watch! I have to admit the girl who lept through time is a great one too. I should actually add it to my list!

ive come to find the rom com aspect mildly enjoyable and on very rare ocassions actually finding it very funny. But i do get where you are coming from! Also +1 for the harem thing, *cough" Zero no Tsukaima" cough*

Awesome. Highly recommend Kaichou (despite the iffy-sounding title) and at least the first half of Kare Kano (despite the iffy rating here). Also, I didn't RTFP before, but I just added a few "likes and dislikes" you requested.

i did read about it, just couldnt bare to watch it. I think it was good in its own way. I dont think any anime has managed to make me dislike a character that intensely.

SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERT!

didn't one end up killing him and lopping off his head then the other kill her then open up her stomach to see if she was preggers? man it wasn't what i was expecting when i started the anime, cetainly breaks the standard mould.

To be fair, Clannad is more of a drama than it is a romance. But yeah, give it another go.

And I'll say True Tears. I liked the ending.

Again steins gate is another good one, although for me it didnt feel as if it fell under "romance". I felt that it did have romance in it but wasnt specially a romance anime. ( personal opinion though) But i freeking loved it as a series. One of my favorites. Watched Suzuka recently and i have to say i really liked it! The only thing i didnt like was how BAD the animation was! I mean to the point of nearly dropping the show about 4 times cos i couldn't stand how badly draw it was. It took away from what was actually a very good series.

also g-rabe agreed. Although the plot was terribly predictable it is still one of my favourites. I thought the character development was brilliant, the relationships were believable, and also it had a loli looking main charcter that didnt make me want to throw her off a bridge or vomit in my mouth. Although Taiga was a crazy bitch she was just the right amount of crazy.

Oh wait. I forgot include my pros/cons of the genre.

So what's I like about that genre is moving story and interesting character development. Romance genre also mix well with many other genres, I may love it even if it's just small part of whole.
I also like motives which rarely happens in "normal" movies or in real life, for example incest (YnS :*).
Now what I don't like. That will be: cliche story, or using ecchi as plot device. I hate forced ecchi. Other things I don't like are personal relations which are sometimes just "retarded". Or harems.

What can I say :)
Before I started watching anime I didn't liked incest too. Probably loved it after watching kiss x sis.
Maybe that's because I don't have any sibling. And yes, I only like and enjoy incest motive when it happens between sisters/brothers or cousins. I hate Incest while mother x son are included.

This.

My list.

Nodame Cantabile
Kanon
Angel Beats(inb4 people laugh at this)
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen(this, many many times)
Steins;Gate
Fate/Stay night(inb4 more laughing)
Seikai no Senki II(All of it)
Myself ; Yourself
Kimi ni Todoke
H2O: Footprints in the Sand
Yoake Mae yori Ruriiro na

Loved all of those. There are many more, but those will do.

I pretty much agree with what the OP said about likes/dislikes, except I do not really find it hard to find decent romance anime. Then again, I have a lot of free time to do the finding, so..

Other than those things, I generally like romance for a lot of reasons. Largely because I find it leads to the most emotional scenes.

1. NANA. No exceptions. I died when I watched this... and in a good way.

2. Nodame Cantabile, how can you not love this?

3. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, although I hated the Cal parts.

4. Honey and Clover (1st season only because I hated the end pairings with every fibre of my being)

5. Itazura na Kiss, it was great how it showed their lives beyond that "first kiss."

6. Gosick, loved the setting and mystery but the romance did need some work.

7. Kimi ni Todoke (1st season only, and that's pretty self-explanatory. When 2nd season came along it was like they had absolutely no progress)

And yeah, Josei > Shoujo romances imo. I'd watch anything Josei.

Pros: I think having a mature relationship is a big deal. Like, going farther than the cliche chaste kiss at the end. That's why I like Josei better. Even in Nodame Cantabile,

Cons: protagonists like Ayuzawa Misaki. Ugh.

Nana was probably one of the more complete and 'realistic' romance anime I've had the pleasure of watching. Clannad was also decent, even though the second season isn't as much romance as the first. Eureka Seven is probably my favorite romance story of all, though.

ok will leave the incest arguement alone/ wont get too into it. * restrains fingers *

but yer i dont mind a bit of Josei. Can be rather refreshing. Chihayafuru i suppose is down that vein. And although its brilliantly animated and the characters are quite interesting it got horribly repetitive as it just ends up being 15mins of karuta playing per episode over and over and over again. Zzzzz dropped it after a while. I might have a look into Nana and Nodame Cantabile.

There are a lot of decent romance animes out there i aint denying that. But there is also a vast sea of s*** you have to sift through. Its very hit and miss as i find its pretty dependant on the person/ preference to what kind of romance they like. I've seen reviews that have slated some really goos romance animes, but then some which has highly rated ones that a pile of turd. Thats what i mean by hard. Also i find that romance animes take longer to build than any other genre. IN terms of the relationships and character development i would say its quite slow as a genre. As a result the first 5-10 episodes of a romance anime can sometimes be painfully slow and boring. ( thats which i liked about B gata, it got to the point right away, but then again left enough to develop in the course of the series so that you did feel like all the good stuff had come right at the beginning.)

Like; I love when the relationship actually develops. Or at least when it's clarified with, for example, a kiss scene. It feels so rewarding, after sitting through all the build-up (which can often be quite slow).

Dislike: Well, obviously the opposite - when the relationship doesn't get a good conclusion, or takes way too long to develop.
I avoid ecchi/harem, as I want to be able to focus on one relationship without distractions. That's why I also dislike love-triangles.

The manga doesn't have this problem and takes the story to whole new heights. I highly recommend that you read it if you liked the anime.

My favorites would be:
Toradora!
Cardcaptor Sakura
Kanon (2006)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Suzuka
Tsubasa Chronicle (maybe not typically consider a "romance" anime but even as a secondary element it is fantastic in this series)

Quite agree. And the usually pure and deep connection that gets developed between the characters over time. Plus it just makes me feel good inside.

Dislike
Not many serious series seem to be out there in the genre. There are typically more series out there with comedic or ecchi elements. Also typically I feel that manga has a much wider selection of good romance series that are given a good amount of time to develop at their own speed (Ex.- Fruits Basket and Tsubasa Chronicle had a lot more time to progress the romance in the manga versions).
Harems don't exist in America. If one guy is constantly surrounded by beautiful girls, then he's probably the gay friend.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama was a lot of fun to watch. If you like that kind of show you will almost definitely like it. As to Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukanai that kind of show ALWAYS ends like that, lol. I guess the writers just fear giving any closure because it makes a sequel make no sense. As long as they leave it open, it can be expanded on. +Respect to the series that give closure after one season.

That said, I still found that anime quite enjoyable just to watch, probably because I knew it would have a terrible ending - they all do.
