Try the Movie princess mononoke.
And try to avoid Ecchi anime series. :3

Sakamichi no Apollon is the one I've been watching recently that really jumps to mind. It's a nice slice of life story set just after the end of WWII. It's a turbulent time in Japan's history which the anime has touched on so far but since it's set in a quite little town that is really just the backdrop for the anime. Instead the anime is more focused on the lives of it's characters that are all bound together by their love of jazz. The anime has a great sound track, characters that are believable, sympathetic and likable and it's a very relaxing anime to watch. I actually am watching this one each week with my girlfriend.

If you want something with a little bit more action then you could also try Katanagatari. It's got great dialogue, a simple plot that stays interesting with some well placed twists, a bit of romance between the protagonists and some great looking action scenes. Actually my girlfriend just watched this and loved it.

It depends what she likes generaly - action, some comedy or romantic stories?
Than it's easier to help.
but Ghibli is safe bet
from romance - Kimi ni Todoke or Toradora
action - Steins;Gate or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
SoL - Aria

My wife liked Girlfriend X - she hates anime in general, yet this one she found ok. But she is weird.

There is literally no hint yaoi in either of those anime I just suggested. Not even close.

Like Dalek said, Ghibli is the best choice. Or something like Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo.

It's not - just saying both MC have girls they like.
And there is no hint of yaoi (unless one see it everywhere but that's not the case here)

Okay, no, it isn't yaoi at all. There isn't anything yaoi about it at all. I don't know if your looking at the wrong show or what but there isn't even a hint of yaoi in Kids on the Slope.
