THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Hyouka IMPRESSES! Just look at the following,

WOW! That was scary along with the old house in the spoiler
was pretty scary for a movie yet it was more of real recording. Still I think gimmick can be used as ketchup or something the guy slept on that broke under him. SCRATCH THAT! FORGET IT! Look in the spoiler
HOLY SHIT! The small poor girl has her skull bashed? One of the guys is bleeding from the back of his head? Is that someone hanging? HOLY SHIT! I am super freaked out by these revelations.

However it looks legit enough of someone being dead from blood loss? Well it certainly thrilled Eru from the faces she makes in the spoiler
along with naturally Houtarou worrying of over spending energy.

About the new girl, one of my favorite poses of her is the following,

From it one can see her pale skin more so than even Ibara or Eru I find. This is due in mostly how her hair are arranged along with the eye color that matches them. She makes me think of the coined term “Ice Queen” with those eyes. Suffice to say I add her in my Harem. According the spoiler
her many poses are very well more than enough with a close up of her face being one of them and my #2 favorite pose of hers, anyone can agree that her looks are quite nice.

About the new people, at the end of the episode were introduced to 4 people totally refreshing and new. In total we can say in major intros 5! 5 persons were in this episode fresh among the other minor ones showing around. That being said I present a list of what I though of the other ones.
  • The girl in the spoiler
looks like a little depressive but I like her hair style and general appearance. In general she was nice to see being new.

  • The girl in the spoiler
THAT ONE! I take to my Harem too! I love her hair style that mix in with her eyes but it’s more than anything her eye color and style that matches her all around. Totally my #2 after the the Ice Queen girl.

  • This guy in the spoiler
looks though. Looks built well. Has a serious stance from what I have seen of him. I would suspect he might be murderer right away due to his physique and sheer power of doing all those nasty things done upon the killed people. However nothing can be said till next episode gives out some insight.

  • The glasses guy in the spoiler
has a Seiyuu that apparently a very cool female below whom is my friend likes him. I myself will be looking forward to see him interact out as I am not familiar with the Seiyuu much. One can notice the nice design on his chin, nose and hair style being AWESOME HECK YEAH! Damn right! I have not seen much of this type of design in general. Quite shooting great about it, I was upon seeing it. Point being it’s great to see such a variation.
So from the list a cast of promising episodes comes and I do hope this arc holds out 2 more episodes. The cast is so much more rich and involving them long would be great in the series.

Certainly in thee end there are new people coming in and Hyouka with this episode is starting to get serious. To say the least. That was totally gruesome that movie shown.

About the preview, OH YES! The girl that is my #2 has more time in the spoiler
with a rather nice expression in it. I am happy of that and the depressive girl might turn out more fun. Might edit later.

Finally, I've waiting for him!! It's the reason I watch Hyouka. The megane guy in the film!! Voiced by Miyu-Miyu!!

lol @ the awkward talking in the incomplete film. Wait, is that girl who went in with Miyu-Miyu's character voiced by Minorin (thought so, I heard her voice!!)?

So the mystery this time is to "find" the killer.

lol @ Tarot card talk after accepting the offer.

Real "detective thing" is next ep.

Beginning was interesting. Gave some clues about what was going on later in the episode.

The reactions from that Kaitou dude's classmates was so...underwhelming.

Was an alright episode.

Next episode should be nice.

I was totally thinking of the Persona Game Series, when they were talking about the tarot cards. LOL I would have said Oreki was Star too, never even thought about him being strength. Of course Satoshi would be Magician >.<
Laid-back episode. Hopefully more comedy and ChitandaXOreki in the next episode XD

Fuyumi >= Eru! I kind of like Fuyumi more, she is the type of character that attracts my attention.

Anyway, I wonder where the plot if going? Is it just going revolve around solving "mysteries" with a hint of sexual tension between Houtarou and Eru?

The characters in the preview look like they would have "fun" personalities, especially the girl and the guy in the glasses. I'm looking forward to seeing their interaction with Houtarou.

Commentary during the movie was great as well as the usual Houtarou Satoshi discussion at the episode start. Really just need second part of the episode.

Clubs in anime are always interesting than no filmmaking club making hour long productions, or a classics club that solves mysteries, or exotic trips to mountain inns, only thing irl is the going home club.

Now, I feel like rewatching the movie to figure out who is the culprit since they haven't solve it yet. XD But I never get this kind of thing right...

And I love the huge cast in hyouka! It's nice to hear other awesome seiyuu! :D

EDIT after rewatching the movie: No clue about who can be the culprit... >>

Episode was plain. The voicing even if its an amateur filming just sucked hard. I couldn't stand listening to them screaming there voices louder than they should have when talking on film. The film IMO was a waste of 5-7 minutes.

this episode was not as fulfilling as i thought. however, the exposition to the main plot pulled me in. the short film showed actually creeped me out, more than i thought it would. the progress in the mystery, however, went nowhere. i was very disappointed but the introduction of the new characters were very nice.
over all for a hyouka episode, 4/5.

Nobody is going to try guessing the culprit? Judging by the map and where the characters went + his reactions just before the crime, I think it's Katsuta (the guy who opens the door/window of the crime scene). Yamanishi is also possible, though less suspicious (it might be humorous foreshadowing to make her the culprit, considering Oreki's response).

I don't really understand the situation with the class detectives. Is Hongou so sick that she can't even say the name of the killer? Did she have to go a hospital out of town? Also, who was Irisu chatting to before Chitanda? Well, as long as the mystery is entertaining, I don't mind having these questions unanswered.~

/a/ is having a good time trying to solve it. I guess MAL users are too busy bulking up their list to take the time.

In any case, it has been determined that Irisu was talking to Hongou at the beginning. Hongou is apologizing for not finishing the script and "being at the wrong place at the wrong time" implies that something happened to her, which would be the "illness", whether or not it actually is one. I couldn't say why they can't just ask her, though I do enjoy trying to solve the mystery myself(Of course, not without the help of a few /a/nons).

What, a rare episode where we're not given a conclusion to the mystery and only one person is giving it a shot here? That's disappointing.

Let's give this a go, people!

Firstly, the setting:
The map:

As you can see, there are two floors to the building (which is a theater, by the way...). Access between floors are only available from the two flights of stairs in the front lobby, and the only way to travel between each side of the second floor is beside these stairs as well. From the map, there it appears that there is basically no restrictions to movement on the first floor. Note, however, that the double-doors into the audience seating area below the stage is boarded up, and in addition the corridor connecting the two backstage areas is blocked. The footage doesn't show it clearly, but it would appear that the entrance from the right backstage area onto the stage is similarly inaccessible.

The group splittings:

For simplicity's sake, I'll call them by their choice of path, so they are:
Top-left-kun and top-left-chan
Bottom-left-kun and bottom-left-chan
Top-right-chan
And bottom-right-kun (but in lieu of any subsequent victims I'll just call him victim-kun)

Secondly, the logistics of the crime:
1.) Victim-kun was found on the first floor, in the room furthest down the right hallway (Backstage-right). His left arm has been cut from his body.
2.) No audible sound was made that alerted any of the others of the crime.
3.) The room was locked after the crime occurred. The key remains in the room.

I bolded that last one because it was an interesting shot at making it into a closed-room murder. Recall that the two alternate entrances to the crime scene (not the door) are blocked. The key remains inside but the door is locked, so you have a perfect closed room... not. The window here is the obvious exit- the footage shows it's unlocked when the guy opens it, so this is the most likely solution. The other possibility is that culprit did a short sprint to the key-room to filch the master keys, locked the door then put them back afterwards, but that's highly roundabout, and I think Occam's Razor would apply here.

Going from the map, the culprit must be capable of accessing the backstage-right room from the outside. That means they need to go through a window (or else the front door, but again, that seems unlikely). We can pretty much eliminate the second-floor groups (That's left-top-kun&chan, and right-top-chan) on the basis that they couldn't get back to their original positions from the outside after committing the crime, barring some strange climbing trick. That leaves, of course, bottom-left-kun and bottom-left-chan.

My train of thought ends there- I'll come back to it later to see if I made any mistakes and to hopefully draw some conclusions. I'll take a look at /a/ and see how far they've gone, too.

Someone on /a/ suggested that Sugimura(Or top-left-kun, as you called him) would be the killer, seeing as he was in the best position to get to Kaitou(Victim). If anybody else had tried, they would have had to go through the lobby which is in plain sight of Sugimura.

Since Sugimura knew where the master key was, he only had to go down to the office, swipe the keys, catch up to Kaitou and kill him. After that, he locks the door with the master key, returns it to its original position and goes back into his room to wait for the others come out in order to abate any suspicions.

However, this doesn't explain how he cut off his hand and killed him.

Yeah, I saw that post too. I've mostly disregarded the master keys lock method as being roundabout, but now I feel extremely retarded.

I think they're right that the footage of the grass is meant to show that it's not been stepped in, too. I really want to chalk it up to the film club being generally incompetent at what they do, but the length of the shot would suggest otherwise, ruling out the window through evidence that no one passed through it rather than a physical barrier.

That would, indeed, make Sugimura the most suspicious.

After finishing the episode, I rewatched the movie in the episode to try to find out the murderer (for the fun and the lulz)

My guess is that it is Sugimura (the guy with glasses). What led me to believe that it is him is that:

1. He went in the room containing the keys with the girl and knew that there was a master key, so he could have taken the master key without that other girl that was in the room knowing it after leaving to join the group.
2. Sugimura was the last one to meet up after checking the rooms. Could have been because he was cleaning any leftover blood on him in the room that he was.
3. The most suspicious act that happened in the movie: when they opened the room where the murder had happened, Sugimura "fell/tripped" on the ground where the blood was. It was probably done on purpose because he could have had leftover blood on his hands and wanted to hide it by "tripping" on the blood.

Just my theory ;P.

We went over the other points but that one is interesting, I hadn't thought of that. Though in the time it would take to go back to his room, wait, and then back to the scene of the crime, the blood on his hands that he couldn't have gotten off would most likely be obviously dry.

I'm honestly surprised at how "realistic" the camerawork for the amateur film was. The shaky camera and constantly moving perspective must have taken quite a bit of work. Nothing really screamed CG either, except maybe the cut showing the floor plans. Mad props to KyoAni as usual.

It wasn't that great IMO. You can tell they tried something new. Doing these 3D-area effects are hard though so I can't really complain. Can't wait to see how much they improve in the future.

I don't mean the text msgs (which I also decided were Hongou + Irisu), but the chat room before Chitanda logs in. Irisu seems to be asking for help from somebody who can't give any help but suggests something about senpais and dancing. A cryptic conversation.

On Sugimura: he's the one leading everyone to the "research spot" so looked suspicious from the beginning. But I don't think his knowing about the master key, his appearing last, or his tripping were particularly incriminating. If anything, Kounosu is the most suspicious around the time of the crime (how does she know so much about this place? why was she the one to suggest it?). It's still impossible to say at this point. We can't even guess at a motive or method yet. (In the end, I like my Katsuta theory.)

But really: why cut off a hand? The fact that the key was still there might also be important. There are 3 rooms upstairs and 5 downstairs. 3 people went to the 3 rooms upstairs, but only 3 people were downstairs for those 5 rooms. Kaitou went alone with 1 key to a hallway with 3 locks. Yet when the group was searching for Kaitou, 2 of the doors were open, and 1 locked (presumably the one for the key he had). Very strange. The master key must be involved, or perhaps some keys open multiple locks (Kaitou's key opens both waiting rooms on the right, Yamanishi's both on the left, Katsuta's the back; &c).

I can't say for sure who Irisu is talking to on the school chat(apart from Chitanda), but seeing as Irisu is calling them senpai it means they're a third year, and I don't believe we've had a third year introduced to us yet. Apart maybe from that guy who smoked in his clubroom, but I doubt he'd called himself a~ta~shi~ with a little music note, but that's just me.

Also, a conjecture on what went down which I think makes some sense was posted here:

acting and plot in that horrible movie were better than in series XD

just to say who killed...
strongest suspicions are on that guy with yellow shirt (the one who opened the window):
- he was opening the doors, or rather could pretend they are locked - bonus for him would be showing that master key was in the same place where it was on the beginning
- than opening the window, it may be shock but also showing that this was only way someone would be able to come into the room - yet since grass outside has no traces of movement it --> killer went in and out in same way (doors)
- than he goes to gap between room and wall (if I read it well from the plan) - but again it would be impossible as it would make so much dirt
question is: why did he cut off that hand and that glass on the floor is a bit weird

Still lack of motif is a bit weak side of this story - and I hope they won't go "Ten Little Niggers" on this (and preview suggest this)
plus: "Why didn't she ask EBA?" ? - quite nice :D unless it refers to the book than it's simply weird

I think the culprit is the quiet girl with purple shirt: Yuri. the reasons is:

1. she knows the building too well. She finds the map and she knows where the keys are.
2. she distributes the keys, so she can determine who is going where.
3. she is going to the room right above where the victim was killed.
4. she is alone on the second floor.

what I think it happened: like we can see on the map, on the right side of the second floor there is a window just like the room where the victim was killed. she opened the window of the second floor and tied a rope on the window. then she went to the room where the victim was and killed him. with the key of the victim, she locked the door, took the rope outside the window (so no footprint outside the grass), climbed up and closed the window from the outside and voila. one close room killing mystery.

So,who do you think killed that guy.Personally,my guess is either that quiet girl or that glasses guy.Personally,I think it was that quiet girl since she knew the most about the house/

It has sense still there are few things:
- they were taking keys on their own - so no way of determining which room that guy will take, it may be that anyone who is in THAT room should die, but this is fail here as we know nothing of reason of death
- we don't know, or at least it's not shown if room above has window in that place (we may assume so)
- there are two other people on the second floor so they may have heard something or see if they open the window
- I like idea of using rope but window was a stuck - so closing it from outside may be difficult (not impossible thou)

and still there is matter of cut hand, this bothers me a bit - it needs some strength to do plus why it was so far from the body (I will drop this series if it will turn out to be an accident)
Plus that preview... if it will turn up really to be like this - than it will be simply LAME (meaning Glasses-kun and quiet girl are left)
So for now i will stick up with my "Yellow guy" theory, while one above makes perfect sense.
