Ok I can understand where you're coming from but Pokemon and Sonic have had that "childish" image for more than a decade now that's not going to change im sorry that's just the way it is. You're not going to see Pokemon suddenly appear on Nbc at 7:30 with brand new uncensored content. I've seen some gruesome things in DBZ like Tien getting his arm punched off and I've seen a couple of subbed DBZ episodes subbed but I didn't like Gokus voice which made me care less about watching it so I stopped or maybe I just watched the wrong episode to notice a difference.
you know who voice Son Goku

No why?

calling that woman a bad seiyuu is an insult

Sorry I just dont like it.

I don't think it's that bad, to be honest! :3

Some would say it's that the definitive Goku. Of course appreciating the performance would mean watching Dragon Ball before DBZ to understand what kind of character they were trying create.

Even if it is butchering the original, you don't have to watch it and if anime is reaching audiences that it wouldn't normally reach then whats the problem?

I guess it all depends on what we are looking at. As a fan of Dubs, with nothing against Subs (I think the whole who-ha about Dubs vs Subs is a waste. Both have the potential to be great if done right. I digress!), I think the American 'invasion-you call it?' is necessary. There are people who need it in their native tongue, especially children. Thus, Pokemon was a huge success in both Japan and America. Now, America hasn't always gotten it right, mind you. There is a difference between porting something from Japan and making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons (which were amazing)! By making Subs and Dubs, it catches on to more people. Opinions vary, of course. Guess I am just trying to say I support the attempts, failures, and successes of Anime in America.

This may be so, but these things also put people off anime. Problem 1: Kids see kids anime, grow up, and either never knew it was anime in the first place or think all anime is kids anime.
Problem 2: Close minded people who have seen a few episodes of pokemon and Yu-gi-oh didn't like the crappy high pitched, over enthusiastic voices and such that are in the american versions, dislike anime from then forward.
Problem 3: The original Japanese companies hardly get any money from their product being broadcast in America.

I never watch anime that is dubbed...the same way I wouldn't like to watch an american cartoon dubbed into japanese (ugh)... but I remember when Sailor Moon was aired in my country and they censored a few stuff: suddenly Haruka was a boy (although you can definitely see the girl has boobs) and in the first season Zoisite is the brother of Kunzite (I was like, wtf?)...plus they aired it around 9 am...I said it hundreds of time and will again Sailor Moon is not a children's anime.
However (to go back on topic), I must admit that GIS and Akira weren't soooo bad. But in general I do not like stuff that is dubbed/ censored/ cut/ re-edited in any way.

I think 4kids got what it deserves, becoming bankrupt and everything. All I worry about now is that if there isn't any localized anime on TV anymore, then how many people later on will know about anime in the first place? This community might die off in a few decades. Enjoying localized anime as a child was one of the reasons I even bothered to try watching real anime later on.

All the American Companies are thinking anime is another cartoon like the one they show for kids. This is the main problem. And then they realize that it's not and they censor the shit out of it. They did it for one piece (Sanji wasn't smoking, he was just licking a lolipop) and Naruto (Disney pissed me off so much. They did so many things to ruin it. The Disney channel should burn in hell)

The only good animes that make it on to TV would be on Adult Swim. The only thing they do is censor the cuss words.

America is destroying anime and the good animes they dub, people won't know about them!!

4kids One Piece is just a disgrace. Guns are toys, Sanji using a lolipop instead of a smoke, and Luffy (and i don't know how)

This is just an good example how the Japanese version is more mature.

That picture at 4min is just freaky

This made me lol so hard.

Hey! I'm just getting into the MAL forums, and I just want to hear your opinions on something that really annoys me. Its when americans come along and turn good anime bad. For example, Dragonball. Dragonball used to be good, but then they came along, censored it all and used it for children. They basically, took it, took a massive crap on it and then put it on children's channels. Also, with the over-enthusiastic child friendly voices on Pokemon and Sonic's voice in the animated sonic the hedgehog really annoys me. I'd love to hear your opinions, if you love it or hate it. This is all merely my opinion. :D

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but theres a book called Japanamerica that details how early imported japanese shows were torn apart to make them better for "american audiences" its a cool bit of history. Prob the only book i've read regarding the so-called anime phenomena that I actually respect.

i believe on the saying don't fix it when ain't broken

that's why i'm anti-dubs. well if they really have to then they have to put enough or more effort on developing it like studying the voices, hiring talented voice actors/actresses that fits the voice or role.

its more like they have to invest and adjust to the anime than the anime have to adjust for them.
