Anime_Name said: It will stabilize eventually, probably around 5-6k a volume or dropping 50-60% from Vol. 1 to the end. Which is where it pretty much already is, minus small fluctuations in opening week sales.Vol. 4 was 36% down from Vol. 1, Vol. 5 should end up about 44% down. So yeah, it's probably almost bottomed out, but I still see sub-6k volumes in its future, shaving off upwards of another 10% or so since more than half its volumes remain. Was your previous post only talking about not seeing much drop from here on out? In that case, then yeah I basically agree. I read it as first as you saying that overall its drop was comparable to other shows. BUY YUYUSHIKI BDS ALL DAY EVERY DAY |

Not that I agree with the myopic like comparison of GC volume 4 to 1(it feels like it lacks context without doing the same to other series for a full comparison to decide how off of the average the drop was), my post at the time was mostly about from this moment forth. |

Anime_Name said: Not that I agree with the myopic like comparison of GC volume 4 to 1(it feels like it lacks context without doing the same to other series for a full comparison to decide how off of the average the drop was) I was comparing it to other series. I explicitly compared to Haganai in an earlier post, and I looked at others while I was at it. I didn't just come up with "it's a larger drop than usual" out of thin air - I follow this stuff every week. But I wasn't going to spend an hour or two compiling all the data for a forum post, since that seemed like overkill (and I am at work after all =P). But the best way to compare would be to look at shows that, say... sold about 5k average or more (low sellers fluctuate a lot since every sale counts comparatively more), ranked every volume (otherwise vol to vol comparisons become meaningless), didn't have a heavily discounted first volume (since that skews things a lot) and came out in the past three years or so (just to compare apples to apples). All the better if the target audience is the same (teen to 20-something males, i.e. core otaku) as well. I already did Haganai, but many others meet the criteria: Amagami SS, Angel Beats!, BakaTest, Bakemono, Denpa Onna, Dog Days, Freezing, GA Art Design, HSotD, Hanasaku, Hayate S2, HidaSketch***, Hyakka Ryouran, Idolmaster, Infinite Stratos, Kampfer, Katanagatari, K-ON!/!!, Madoka, Penguindrum, Mayo Chiki, OreImo, and I don't feel like going through any more of the alphabet. But take your pick of any of those - almost all of them dropped less, often much less, and none particularly worse. I don't think GC did itself any favors by being 11 discs, because that increases consumer attrition even though it does mean you make more money from those who stick around because it costs so much more to complete it. I am not sure how we went from basically agreeing to that above. GC is fewer sales in it's first week. I didn't agree that such a drop off is "significant" at this time to warrant jeering. |

Nothing more or less. GC is fewer sales in it's first week. I didn't agree that such a drop off is "significant" at this time to warrant jeering. Two very different things here: whether it's significant and whether it warrants jeering. Whether it's significant is a matter of analyzing data. Doing so indicates that yes, it is indeed significant, if significance is measured in relative terms, which is the only useful way of doing so. If the data indicated that sales had not dropped significantly, I would have said so. Jeering is completely different and has no place in a neutral discussion of sales data. My feelings about GC have zero bearing on what I've posted so far. I'm just interested in the data. And yes, I find it silly that some people (though not all) are cheering its declining sales in a malicious way. But unfortunately that's just what a lot of people do on MAL and the internet in general when they don't like something and don't have the self-control to just ignore it and keep snide remarks to themselves. You said my comparison was "myopic" for not making an adequate comparison. So I took some time to do so. Nothing more or less. You did not make time to make and adequate comparison. All you did was throw out some ideas of what an adequate comparison from you would look like. Which still leaves the single sales comparison of vol 4 of GC to vol 1 deprived of context. Two very different things here: whether it's significant and whether it warrants jeering. And my post was aimed at a person who did both. If the data indicated that sales had not dropped significantly, I would have said so. You hopped into a reply that wasn't aimed at you. What you would have said is irrelevant as my initial post in this topic was not quoting you. Modified by Anime_Name, 05-29-12, 2:26 PM |

I'm curious if you can articulate what it is you actually want to see, or if you'll just repeatedly say "nope that's not enough" until I lose interest in the discussion and go away. I actually find it a genuinely interesting topic, but it'll only be an interesting discussion if you're actually open to its conclusions. If not, let me know and I won't bother. You hopped into a reply that wasn't aimed at you. What you would have said is irrelevant as my initial post in this topic was not quoting you. Since you're still disputing the "significant" part, not just objecting to the jeering, of course it's relevant. My point is, don't reject the truth of their claims just because they're making them in really obnoxious ways. You can certainly reject their attitudes though, and I'll join you in that despite not being a GC fan. _Yamainu said: Little by little otaku are realising how much crap that series is. Tellingly, the DVD numbers actually went up. You're a bit premature in celebrating its demise. Modified by jmal, 05-29-12, 3:00 PM BUY YUYUSHIKI BDS ALL DAY EVERY DAY |

I actually find it a genuinely interesting topic, but it'll only be an interesting discussion if you're actually open to its conclusions. If not, let me know and I won't bother. I already said that particular comparison wasn't fair and shared what could fix it. The solution is basically doing the same comparison to other like anime. As no point in time did I even hint at that your idea was "not enough", it was just not how I would go about it. I would do it more like the weekly charts and have the comparisons for each ranking anime. Your plan would still provide more of a picture than just doing the math on a single series. Since you're still disputing the "significant" part, not just objecting to the jeering, of course it's relevant. My point is, don't reject the truth of their claims just because they're making them in really obnoxious ways. You can certainly reject their attitudes though, and I'll join you in that despite not being a GC fan. I've only seen episode 1 of GC on it's premiere, I am no fan either. There's no dispute about the significant part as I have already clarified that "my post at the time was mostly about from this moment forth." and as such you "basically agree" that the sales are more or less bottoming out and there isn't going to be a significant change in sales from volume to volume now. |

I didn't take the time to type out every data point (it's... time consuming), but I do actually have the data on hand, and I was looking at it (same Oricon data every sales post is based on) when I listed off all of those shows. In every case except maybe 1-2, their dip from Vol. 1 to the middle volumes was less than GC's (often in the 15-25% range compared to GC's 40%+), when measured the same way. Hopefully that clears up what I was saying there. While the target audience is a bit different, I guess Ao no Exorcist is one of the few examples of a decently-to-high-selling show with a similar decline. It dropped from 23,267 Vol. 1 to 17,027 Vol. 2, then steadily declined in significant chunks down to 8,782, a drop of 62.26% from Vol. 1. Vols. 7 and 9 were actually slightly less than Vol. 10 even. It was still very successful of course- and even a declining GC still sells better than the majority of shows, which we shouldn't forget - but sales attrition was very high. So the Aniplex dispute is also the reason why the Tsuritama BDs are not up for preorders yet? ![]() |

No, but it does have the biggest discounts and an easy way for people to order online. The majority of the sales come from Amazon for anime, so when its not on Amazon it'll hurt... just look at Nise vol. 1 sales vs vol. 2. ![]() |

If that's what I were implying, then sales would have been far less, no? No need to exaggerate my point to try to refute it. As Ryan points out, they are the largest and cheapest retailer for anime. If they're not available, people can either 1) shop elsewhere, at stores that Oricon may not cover or 2) just wait for Amazon to carry them, which they will eventually. ...well, hopefully. This dispute has gone on far too long and I can't see how it's helping anyone... not consumers, not Amazon, and not Aniplex. But I'm sure someone is being damn stubborn, to the detriment of all.
