I'm basically looking for an anime where the the graphics are great and up to date and hopefully with a good story line to it. The story can place wherever, but I prefer a story that takes place at the school and where the guy meets the girl or girl meets the guy.

Some animes I enjoyed that had good visuals and were good were:
Clannad
Kanon
Air

ef - a tale of memories/melodies

I think you'd love the series. Watch memories first since melodies is the "sequel" and you do need a bit of prior knowledge that is given in memories. It tells a very interesting romance story.

I already watched memories, I didn't really enjoy it that much so I probably won't watch melodies.

Ano Natsu de Matteru, normal unrequited romance mess with a (not so) shocking twist
Toradora, one of the most popular, for a reason
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, if you got to have fun with time travel... and then not so much fun
Kimi ni Todoke, though the development is (sometimes painfully) slow
Hotarubi no Mori e, you must watch this
5 Centimeters Per Second, another must watch movie, if just for the animation

Not really interested in movies much, I already watched ano natsu and toradora though. I might look into kimi, bu the the visuals don't look promising.

Lovely Complex for sure, it's got everything you're looking for.
Nodame Cantabile too, but you may dislike the "not so attractive" art style; it really grows on you after a while, though. And Nodame is just wonderful.

NANA doesn't fit your description of "school," per se, but it is IMO one of the best romance anime you can find. It has beautiful art, too.

Yeah I watched like half of NANA and didn't really want to finish since I couldn't stand to watch it because of the graphics.

Toradora, Ef Series, Seto no Hanayome and Lovely Complex are probably the big ones behind the Key franchise.

I don't really see where the romance is in this one, it's a story about girls.

*sigh* I think you just like Key.
Nevertheless the best romantic anime - Paradise Kiss (if you bash the art you have no standards) and NANA.
Not pure romance, but have some really good scenes:
Mawaru Penguindrum, OHSHC, Kuragehime, Higashi no Eden
Movies:
Toki wo kakeru shoujo
Hotaburi no mori e
Howl's moving castle
5 centimeters per second.
The stuff I think you're actually looking for, but I didn't particularly enjoy:
Kaichou wa maid sama
Angel Beats
Ano Natsu
Toradora (this one's better than the aforementioned 3)
Kimi ni Todoke
Special A (this is dreadful)

Technically. However, a *major* subplot that shows up in the first episode is that Ohana is torn about her best friends' romantic feelings towards her, and she spends a good chunk of the anime trying to work out whether she likes him back and then whether the relationship could really work.
