I think that if you look at "mahou shoujo" more as "girl with superpowers works toward saving the world/doing good deeds/etc" then Shakugan no Shana would seem to fit. Sure, I raised my brow at its presence on the list at first but after a bit of thinking I decided, "Yeah, it's not entirely out of place there." I don't know anything about most of the "immediate series to compare" that you mentioned, but Zero no Tsukaima probably doesn't count because it's more of a school life harem romance show.



Anyway, completely unrelated to the above, I added Saraiya Goyou to Historical and will be adding Puni Puni Poemi to Mahou Shoujo in a sec.

I think one of the features of mahou shoujo is transformation, with all the glittering sparkles and stuff. I haven't watched SnS as I'm allergic to Kugimiya Rie, but I noticed that Shana's appearance changes when she uses her powers. I've spend a few hours filtering out those that didn't fit and I hope your suggestions are well thought-out too. :)

And I removed Mirage of Blaze from historical. It's a reincarnation story and doesn't even have so much as a flashback.

Slayers is a fantasy setting where people in general have magical powers. It was either earlier in the replies to this post or in another post in the club's forum that someone suggested Slayers and it was discounted as not fitting the criteria.
