Immahnoob said: And then you ask yourself: "Did Immahnoob talk about realism?". No, of course not. But at least being in a slight RANGE of REALISM would be nice. Tanks. Are. Not. Better. Than. Mecha. In. Anime. And I'm not even a mecha fan and I still know better. I assumed you were, since you were saying that tanks were slow and all. Anyway, it's fine and understandable if you don't find tanks cool or interesting enough. Anime hardly ever portrays tanks in a flattering light anyway, partially thanks to its extensive history in glorifying giant humanoid robots. I don't expect Girls und Panzer to show tanks zooming around like cars either. But "Who would be interested in Tanks anyways?" Well, for one, I love the contrasting juxtaposition of cute girls with military weapons, particularly when the tech isn't too far off from modern technology. I'm also interested in just seeing tanks in the anime spotlight for once, since mecha has been done before a lot. Girls und Panzer will probably be educational in an entertaining way, too. Modern and historical tanks may not be as cool as futuristic robots, but there's potential in using them as a theme. |

Whatever is moe gets to me. But it's okay if you partially agree o.o. That it's not that great (may not be as cool, to quote you). |

This series looks disgusting. What sick mind came up with the idea of making an anime about high school girls and a panzer 4 tank, a tank that caused so much death and destruction during the second world war. how dare the creators trivialise such a horrific symbol of destruction and try to cash in on its image. i mean whats next "Girl und Auschwitz", "Girls und Hitler" |

You think it's alright to make a anime about highschool girls butchering each other over and over again, but when they take one tank from WWII you freak out... interesting indead and had it been better taking a Alliance tank? Last time I checked they weren't any better than the Germans |

what I was trying to say was that this series is clearly just trying to appeal to people who like watching anime`s with high school girls in them (wank bait) and also to weapon Otaku so that it make as much money as possible by selling crappy merchandise. And they don't care how they do it, they just choose a tank that they thought people would recognise without even considering the moral and ethical choices of showing it as long as they can make as much money as possible while tricking idiots into thinking that this is an original, clever idea when in fact its a morally misguided, mish-mash of ideas that have been done a hundred times before. My point about the "Girl und Auschwitz" was not that this series was going to be "extolling the virtues of the Final Solution" but rather that if series`s like this keep getting made and making money where will it end? how long before they`ve run out of places to stick high school girls and think " hey you know what would be funny, we take a bunch of high school girls and put them in the Third Reich, we`ll make millions! I know im exaggerating a little but im not getting pissed off just because they took one tank from world war 2 and that offends me somehow, its how blatantly their just using the image to make money by slapping a bunch of good looking girls next to a tank that people recognise in the hopes fools will watch it. |

There, I noted the pure opinions for you. Remove those two bits, and you have, essentially the following: "A show about school girl characters and tanks is trying to appeal to people who like school girl characters and/or tanks. Also a commercial product wants to make money." Also air helps you breathe and fire is hot. And they don't care how they do it, they just choose a tank that they thought people would recognise Unprovable speculation. without even considering the moral and ethical choices of showing it This assumes there is an immediate moral hazard in even referencing this material, regardless of the manner or context in which it's depicted. A dubious assertion. as long as they can make as much money as possible while tricking idiots into thinking that this is an original, clever idea when in fact its a morally misguided, mish-mash of ideas that have been done a hundred times before. And now your lack of interest in the material just turns into an ad hominem against anyone who is interested in the material, not to mention a total straw man by opposing a viewing reason that may not actually be why people are viewing it. It is factually accurate to say that that tanks are not a common story element in this sort of show. But pointing that out is not the same as saying that originality or cleverness is the primary motivation behind watching. You're also applying a very specific definition of novelty, ignoring that surface characteristics do matter, even if the underlying narrative stricture is not radically different. If this weren't the case, I'd need to watch maybe half a dozen romance anime and then no more ever again. But I don't believe that to be true; the specifics do matter. My point about the "Girl und Auschwitz" was not that this series was going to be "extolling the virtues of the Final Solution" but rather that if series`s like this keep getting made and making money where will it end? Goodwin's Law and likely slippery slope fallacy. More to the point, no commercially produced anime would ever portray a historically accurate account of the policies of the Third Reich in a positive or sympathetic light while playing i for laughs. At most you'll get obvious parodies or homages that refer to early 20th century Germany or some of the iconography in the abstract, a la Hetalia or Strike Witches. If you want to argue "too soon" then fine, that's your right, but few will share the sentiment. Above and beyond all this, how much do you know about the show, exactly? If models of tank other than (or in addition to) the traditional Panzerkampfwagen series were depicted, would that matter? Is one inanimate weapon of war better or worse than another, once transplanted out of its historical context and into a completely fictional one? And do you restrict this caustic dislike for the material to anime only, or would the thousands upon thousands of allusions to (our outright depictions of) the WWII-era German military in every other imaginable fictional genre and medium elicit a similar reaction? i think we`re getting a little to philosophical about this and your right i dont know much about the show, i can only go on what i have seen and who knows maybe it`ll be great, i doubt it but you never now i understand that animes are essentially a business and that they are trying to make money that's obvious but its a little to busineesy at this point to where its almost a façade. they`re just slapping together elements of stuff that's worked before and shoving it into this in the hopes of making a quick profit. Why does the story have to be about teenage girls, because their popular and make money, why is it set in a high school, because thats relate-able , popular and makes money. Its not the showing of the tank that's the problem, its the context, thats the difference between say "Crosses of Iron" and this anime, where its obvious their just using the image of the tank to try to make money. if this was a deep thought provoking story with really creativity and passion then id be fine with them showing any Tank or weapon but when its obvious that its just being used as a cheap marketing gimmick then im sorry to tell you but its wrong. if you want to make a silly anime about high school girls and tanks that fine, but use a generic looking tank, why even bring the Nazi element into it at all, it makes no sense? why not for example have an anime about a group of people who live in a world that has been at war for hundreds of years to the point where technology has devolved and the fighting is now done with primitive weapons. then this group of people in a Gurren Lagann sort of way discover an old working tank, figure out how to use and try to end the war or something. a little change would be nice now and again you know, throw in some memorable characters a few plot twists and some thought provoking episodes and boom you've got a winner, its not rocket science. this show is just following the same old formula High school girls+ mecha = Infinite Stratos High school girls+ flying = Strike Witches High school girls+ magic = Shugo Chara! High school girls+ zombies = High school of the dead High school girls+ Tanks = Girls Und Panzer and those are just the ones off the top of my head, there's a lot more out there and until people realise this then creativity and originality are as good as dead. |

I can absolutely guarantee that if you think it has ever been different, then you are wearing glasses that are so deeply rose-tinted as to be outright opaque. then im sorry to tell you but its wrong. No. You mean you personally feel that way. And you don't have to be sorry about that if you state it as such, but yes you probably should be sorry for trying to pass a subjective moral and aesthetic judgment off as an objective fact of life. if you want to make a silly anime about high school girls and tanks that fine, but use a generic looking tank, why even bring the Nazi element into it at all, it makes no sense? Referencing German military technology is not the same as "bringing in Nazi elements". If the girls start goosestepping in SS uniforms or doing Heil Hitler salutes, then you'll have a point. Merely including the German word for "tank" in a title is not Nazism. why not for example have an anime about a group of people who live in a world that has been at war for hundreds of years to the point where technology has devolved and the fighting is now done with primitive weapons. then this group of people in a Gurren Lagann sort of way discover an old working tank, figure out how to use and try to end the war or something. It's called Sora no Woto. this show is just following the same old formula High school girls+ mecha = Infinite Stratos High school girls+ flying = Strike Witches High school girls+ magic = Shugo Chara! High school girls+ zombies = High school of the dead High school girls+ Tanks = Girls Und Panzer Sorry, my eyes are malfunctioning. There's obviously no way you just seriously said all those shows have "the same formula", of course. Because I'm sure we both know how utterly crazy that would be. Nobody would include magical girl shoujo manga adaptations in a list with late night otaku anime (HSotD is a bizarre enough comparison as it is) and expect to be taken seriously. So let's score one for sanity and both agree that you didn't actually type what I just quoted. Sound good? Good. Alright, moving along. until people realise this then creativity and originality are as good as dead. Maybe your definition of "creativity" and "originality" is dead, but thankfully it bears no resemblance to mine, so I can't get worked up about it. magic_kaito said: High school girls+ magic = Shugo Chara! Um... the girls in this show were not high schoolers. In fact, they were not even middle schoolers. Plus, there were boys and girls, and it wasn't like the girls severely outnumbered the boys. This show obviously doesn't fit with your list of shows following the "same old formula". As someone else pointed out, I have a hard time seeing Shugo Chara! and High School of the Dead being included in the same list, for they are nothing alike. |
