Much of the appeal comes from how detailed and technical the show is about space-travel while still managing to appeal to a wide/not-scientifically-literate audience. Secondly, the show prioritizes setting, characters, and plot (in that order, I think) over constant action/lasers/explosions and the like. Essentially I would go as far as to say it's one of the more intelligent shows currently airing. It's hard to call any show that mentions "Lagrange Points" in the correct context as unintelligent. Of course, such technical background is not needed to understand and enjoy the show; it's just that these little details can really please the viewer that catches on to them. |

I don't think we need to invent completely unique reasons for why a show like Mouretsu sells well. I wouldn;t say it's low on action. It has action at the appropriate points. And non-action shows have sold well before. It's dialogue heavy, sure, but so is Bakemonogatari, so no that's not a deal-breaker either. Mouretsu is character focused, and the cast is mostly attractive girls. Marika is a fantastic protagonist and she's surrounded by almost as awesome characters. It's about space pirates. It's got action, great music, fun stories... really Mouretsu has everything going for it. That doesn't mean it's an automatic success (and to keep things in perspective, it's selling ~7k... definitely good but not amazing by any means) but Mouretsu executes it so well, and I guess that's convinced people (like me) to buy it. If anything is a bit unusual about Mouretsu it's how it's steadily increased over time. It also must have exceeded King Records' expectations because they had such problems pressing enough copies for Volumes 1 and 2. phoenixalia said: Is Moretsu sci fi and mecha? Cuz I can never get into those two genres no matter how good the anime is. Weren't you despairing back when Mouretsu Volume 1 had power sales that shows like it didn't sell? I assumed that meant you were actually watching it, or had some reason to want it to succeed at any rate. Watch it! It's a sci-fi setting definitely. Mecha, no. There are spaceships of course (they're space pirates after all), but that's it. Looking forward to Volume 1 also maybe ranking again in the full list at the end of this week (it was right behind Volume 2 in the Thursday daily rankings) which would fill in 4 weeks worth of data, from wk7 to wk10. I find it sad that Choucho does worse than May'n with those singles, Hyouka's OP is obviously superior even if against May'n. Awesome to see Pirates kicking ass, i hope for next season. Also Wait for it. レッツゴー ED イケイケゴーゴー |

King_Zero said: Is Horizon that good to get 20k sales? o_O It has good action, complicated plot and setting and awesome characters but a lot of people dropped it because of one of reasons: 1) To complicated seting. Most of people just get WTF effect first couple of episodes and didn't get it 2) A lot of girls with big boobs on the poster. Some people just think that the show is another ecchi harem |

Mouretsu Pirates number 1, something is fishy: p I dropped it around the seventh episode. Bored me to hell, well guess there's still a market for that kind of anime. |
