Seems like real thing (mystery about the title Hyouka, the magazine) starts this ep. and previous 3 eps. were just showing how smart the main guy is? Even though he got the "truth", she still doesn't know why she cried.

Tbh, I'm guessing this will be the most challenging mystery he will solve this entire season.

Anyways...welcome to paradise aka the Chitanda residence:

Let one of the hardest mystery (to date) of Hyouka begin. I'm keen to seeing how Houtarou will solve this one if he's good as some people think he is.

Intermission quote:

The time when awn bear seeds

Hmm, did anyone notice the tsundere-like tendencies of Ibara this episode? Hmm, does that mean...

A lot of analysis this episode. Might have to re-watch again.

It has to be extremely hard if it takes the entire season, but it is probable to be recurring.

There's more to the conclusion, expulsion and peaceful protest doesn't exactly add up.

This episode for sure is a whole lot better than the previous ones, and yes houtarou solves something again but now it is in regards to chitanda’s uncle. For anyone who is still complaining with the plot of hyouka should definitely watch this episode and re-think again. After this episode we can really say that hyouka is different from other animes, hyouka is a breathe of fresh air in regards of the story line and the mystery thingy feels very compelling that you would want to outsmart the heroine.

Despite my bitching in the next page the episode managed to pull out rather impressive visuals once again and fill up on Eru’s background in terms of her finances and living quarters. Once again Hyouka gives out its MOE and mystery but WITH NO FUCKING PARANORMAL! FUUUUUUUUUUU! That is still annoying. I wish the mysteries would follow suit of what episode 1 showed being capable of but alas it was a mystery that was mundane and realistic while not paranormal at all till I assumed some stuff.

About Eru, she really had great faces but my favorite gag is most certainly the following one,

When Satoshi suddenly got hungry, well it sure interrupted Eru but it was so ROFL because it came out suddenly.

While Ibara got me to like her mainly due to the following,

Apart from her teasing/slutty faces those kind of faces are excellent and much liked by me of her character. PLEASE CONTINUE IBARA! MOEEEEEEEE! That’s all there is to it really.

In conclusion I am hoping the mysteries start having paranormal shit around cause Hyouka is a lot about that less they trolling us in the beginning to get more serious. Who knows. It is most certain that below is a small theorem of what I think of the setup however it still has to PAN out as in, become truth. That requires time in the series.

BTW Image Stitches and Image Dump done in the BLOG:
http://ecchiking99.blogspot.ca/2012/05/hyouka-episode-4-image-stitches-and.html
much amazing visuals stemming from them.

JACKPOT! Come and get them and Eru is good there. This time I GET AHEAD!

Seems like they are going to make the "Mysteries connecting to the big mystery" They might cluster fuck the theme "Puzzle" which is a main part of mysteries to solve with some. Some don't rely on puzzling but in thee end all those pieces of each puzzle will contribute and BOOM! Mystery solved.

Well it's all setup theorem. Remains to see if it pans out.

I thought it went well. As I understand it, this is a show about four kids becoming friends and solving a mystery. They're nibbling around the edges regarding the core, what Eru forgot regarding what her Uncle told her. I'm fine with the pace and development so far.

I was wondering that, why did she cry then? If we assume that Oreki's story is true, then maybe Jun told her that he was going to be expelled and that he couldn't tell her anymore stories. Maybe the stories were important to her.

I know that it's going to revolve around the Culture Festival if his conclusion if right or not.

err, did we watch the same show ?

This show is the best one of this season until now. brilliant style, very good storytelling and character development, good, clear art and music, clever mysteries...

this show has a very slow pace thats true, but i can't see why so many complain about this.

I'm very tired of flashy chaos shows and adore the slower, more natural development of the story and characters who aren't uber-stylized like haruhi etc.

I prefer talking to the cutesy stuff.

And someone should change the ED. My eyes burned so much I actually had to skip it.

Unfortunately, they only scratched the surface of the mystery... currently with no proofs, just theories. As time goes on, more proofs will change their hypothesis.

Once again i really like how Oreki broke down the mystery; the fact that the mysteries are down to earth is what makes it good imo; because the real BS like ppl claim this show to be would be if the mystery was out of proportion; with that said i doubt the mystery is anywhere near over, so it should be interesting to see how they keep it up; the needed tension or better phrased interest for mysteries is hard to maintain over a long period of time; but if they connect mysteries then i could see it working out.

I agree. If there's anything I like, it's that the mysteries are realistic. And even more so because Oreki's explanations (along with the animations) are really well done to the point where pretty much anyone can understand.

And yay Oreki's a bathroom philosopher like me XD.

The pre bike ride conversation and bike ride conversation were my favorite parts. Satoshi is hilarious. The way the meeting was handled was great though Ibara had pointless chatter and Chitanda needed to calm down, as usual. Pretty funny how Satoshi would keep getting them to change from location to location. He and Oreki really make the anime for me. Probably one of my favorite duos this season.

I liked the return of the animation and visual genjutsus (oreki and all the jpn characters flowing by)

So far this show is good but it could be better. Some of the characters aren't developed very well, with the exception of Chitanda, and the mystery itself isn't that interesting. But the art and music is top notch.

Well with this we hit the basis of the main plot into full swing with finding out what happened 45 years ago. This was a great episode for mystery solving, although its basic "put the pieces together" sort of thing rather than "find the dirty bastard who killed this man by doing etc. etc." Given the summary I can assume murder will be present at least once, but now isn't it.

overall we find out
Eru wondering why she cried was a nice touch because it reminds us that this isn't over. I could tell that it wasn't over just from the fact that this initself is a incedent that happened 45 years ago, it could be a possible link, but it can't at all be the main thing her uncle talked to her about. Also I really doubt that a school event that one wasn't even present in could make someone cry. thats WAAAAAY too far fetched.

Finally got a intro to the main mystery, but is just the beginning.

Eru again moe as hell as always,I want to tastes that onigiris!! Mayaka is also there starting to like her more.

Now to the point the mystery,i really liked the animation of each one of the theories(expected of KyoAni) each one has clue of what "really" happen.

Again Oreki was awesome, that how you use the bathroom!! to think of answers of mysteries!!
I think his theory is right but there is still much much more....this is just starting people i think next episode the big mystery will appear.

Well again good episode, next episode seems will get some answers and more questions...lets see how it goes!!

There is something that cringed during the whole episode, it's all the BS of each one's explanations. The enjoyable and it was tried out hard, was really the sudden jokes going on, the MOE and characters expressions. Really I was thinking WTF happened to the supernatural element this show started out with?

As I though it out, I had no choice but top reject all claims and formulated my own. Among them as I think of them, are spiritual evil influence that aggravated things as the things progressed towards degeneration. There is no reason as to why would Eru cry over such a petty mess TBH. There was not even a single death nor was there anyone hurt of whom the uncle would dare to tell less he did.

That being said I also think the elemental spirits would have influenced the destructive ways and forces that have plagued this event.

Now I might be assuming and imagining a lot of things but I hold on to my theorem being that Uncle meddled with the super natural. Thus it got back at them with this accident and problem in the school that forced up loads of shits. This show is not Detective Conan nor other normal detective stuff. It irritates me that the supernatural is not implemented as it was in very first episode. What good is it in a show if you don't max out both elements and rather concentrate on only the mystery?

That being said all those theorems are BS to me no matter what. I am going to formulate my own theorem based on the supernatural possibilities I know of being possible in this series. /rant over.

Other than that based on the Eru’s place in the spoiler
I think the girl is stinking RICH! RICHIE RICH! Let’s see the spoiler clearly shows:

A) A large terrain worth millions with a rice field.

B) Many antiques worth millions if sold at auctions.

C) I see a large mansion. The larger the space in a place the more it’s worth. Look at the big mansion that are over 7 000 000 USA dollars.

That being shown our Chitanda is rich and a potential to marry and be prosperous in money, food since she has a rice field and a stable future. Eru is the wife of all males for her rich heritage and appeal.

Oreki has got the brains but I don't believe his theory is true, at least not entirely but that's just my feeling.

I like how Mayaka can't stand Oreki the slightest bit and the expressions she makes are funny.

Satoshi and Oreki are an interesting pair, there were some important points to hear while they were on their way to Eru's place. Was she seriously alone in that huge ass mansion, how can they even keep it clean and all that stuff?

I know brains doesn't always translate into grades, so does that mean that Oreki's lack of motivation is the reason he gets average grades? Because based on perception alone he is head and shoulder above Eru

@Yumekichi11 - Since you're bringing Eru's state to the discussion, there's something bothering me. That really big place is sparkling clean, but only Eru was home... how? ... that's the real mystery.

Perhaps the Chitanda is a family of witches and they use invisible servants...

Maybe the conflict 45 years ago was solved via witchcraft, creating rumors that circulated after the fair, giving the school a bad reputation and forcing the administration to expel Eru's uncle.

So, when Eru was a child, her uncle told her of this event, warning her about how witches like themselves will always be hated by people, thus making her cry.

Due to the trauma she forgot the incident as well as the fact that she comes from a family of witches, leaving her unaware of the enchanting powers that reside in her eyes. Seeing what the revelation had cause the young Eru, her family decided to hide the truth from her, waiting for the time when she is ready for it.

Now, Eru's subconscious is pushing her to remember her heritage, resulting in her obsession with the past.

... How's that for a crack theory?

As usual, Oreki stole everyone's thunder.
He is just too awesome.
This mystery is even becoming more vague as we know more about it.

"Who is Sekitani Jun and what is his exploits?"
"Where is the first Hyouka issue?"
"Why did Chitanda cried when talking to his uncle?"

I am so baffled by the mysteries. But this is what makes this interesting.
Cannot believe I am loving this. Love good mysteries, but kind of hard to relate since I know nothing about Japanese history.

To the episode, love Oreki's concentration mode. Reminded me of two geniuses, Bossun and Conan.

To the people who are watching this anime, this anime is not for you if you can't stand just dialogues.
I can see this going down like Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari. The sub team are doing a good job translating this.

It's possible that Eru felt bad for mistreatment of something but it could be also she felt bad for the monster, thinking it was a wild animal.

Actually I think she had plant like Druid powers. I wrote on the first episode. I mean WTF would picture and put a flower scene that took me some time but finally proved the flowers being exorcistic of demons. Furthermore she has the place to make the herbs and plants. In fact she has many flowers around.

I DIG IT! Possible occult thing can be possible. This is due to the country being more liberal in religious practices going as far as animal sacrifice for example being much easier than in the city TBH.

all i can say is, WOW!!! houtarou is a FUCKING GENIUS, probably my favorite character overall this season

the beginning was confusing at first when eru, mayaka, and satoshi, all tried pulling their info together to bring up a hypothesis. their ideas became convoluted and ended up getting nowhere fast.

but DAMN, when houtarou's brain started ticking again, it sucked me right in.
his analysis and deduction skills are so damn impressive, i havent been this jumpy and excited over watching a guy simply THINK since L.

cant wait to see more of his brainwork pull through and impress the shit out of me as they delve deeper into this mystery. after eru's ominous statements, im sure there's more to this mystery as the story progresses.

can't wait for next week!!!

really boring. It can't be because the genre is mystery, its the anime itself that's plain, and boring. So far all we've had is a cast of characters who are mildly moe (the girls) and nothing else. This is half as good as K-ON, and I do not like K-ON that much.

The way the mysteries are, are fine by my standards, I would rather have facts put together and different hypotheses being refuted until a strong one appears rather than farfetched and forced conclusions.

The lighthearted and slow pace of the show is kinda a good point for me rather than a bad one, it adds to the fact that they're just high school students not super detectives.

I'm quite surprised that some people wanted or hoped this anime will have an inclination towards the supernatural. For one, mystery + supernatural has been overused just like mystery + crime/murder. Besides, when I read the summary before this show aired, all I expected is that it'll be school life + mystery. I looked forward for its realism than somewhat surrealism. Seldom an anime will be like this show: it depicts mysteries common people may face.

The thing I loved in this episode was how Oreki had broken down his summary points. It was organized and clear. The how, when, where, who, what, and why questions' answers were interrelated and articulated very well. Oreki is definitely intelligent, and just as he made his club co-members quite amazed, I myself was amazed by his prowess. I don't just love his voice (the same seiyuu of Kanda Yuu from DGM??); I also love his character.

There is an evidence of change in Oreki too. Unlike before wherein he had to be begged 'til he's ensnared by Chitanda's hair, he has slowly started to solve mysteries around him without much coaxing from others.

I don't think the characters are dull. They're dynamic. The development is in a good pace. The characters aren't superficial in perspective. Just as each of the four are judging each other's character, so are we involved in perceiving what truth or falsity one has said about the other.

I'm loving this show.

Supernatural? What the f*** are you talking about? There hasn't been a slightest hint of supernatural in this anime from the start.
