Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The warring philosophies and Yang Wen-li and Reinhard von Lohengramm was just fascinating. Although I side with Yang in my personal beliefs there is no denying there is some truth in Reinhard's tyrannical approach. Watching these charismatic characters fight for their ideals constantly made me think about my own ideals. But even beyond these two characters there were other character that had their own interesting and well developed ideologies. Paul von Oberstein and his Machiavellian plotting was another good example of a man with an iron code he followed. He was misunderstood by everyone else in the Galactic Heroes with the exception of Reinhard who saw the man's true value even if it was impossible for him to like Oberstein. Then there is my favorite character Oskar von Reuenthal. He is just such a complex character it's hard to even try to sum him up. The best way to do it would be to say a man doomed from birth. Born in a different era he would have been an Emperor but he was unlucky enough to be born in the era of Reinhard and Yang Wen-li. The other anime that constantly makes me think is Kaiji. Not only is it the best thriller I've ever seen but it's social commentary and it's exploration of the darker side of human nature really makes me think. The thing I love most about Kaiji is the speeches given by the villains might put of the darkest spin on people but there is no denying there is at least some truth to what they say. |

I learnt from school days that the rational response to someone cheating on you was to obliterate them. I also learnt that the rational response to a girl sleeping with your boyfriend is to obliterate THEM. Worships Asparagus. |

The original Yu-Gi-Oh series. It told me friendship is magic..... jk. Well it did but it did not speak to me the most. As to answer your question, I would say it would be Welcome to the NHK since it had a couple of messages but the most prominent was to never give up on your life nor your friends. ![]() |

Death Note/Code Geass - sometimes you have to do some bad and sacrifice yourself to do a lot of good and help those around you.(Not considering the power hungry part) |

Ardamaeus said: Too many, too many . . . Right now LOGH is teaching me the flaws of democracy. No, the flaws of a corrupt democracy embroiled in war, wracked by corruption and inequality where people have given up faith in the democratic process itself? Sounds at lot like the united states to me. Logh is definitely up there in messages for me. And besides, who can insure Eva - That, despite the pain of interaction with others, complete individuality and existentialism is the best chance for hapiness and life is worth living. Isolation and assimilation are just two wrong extremes. Monster - the series is humanism in a nutshell. Signature removed. While I think you're close I do believe the LotGH is trying to show that no form of government is perfect. Even a good democracy does have it's flaws and a lot of the short falls can be made up for with a strong autocracy but the fatal flaw of autocracy is all the power is concentrated into the hands of single ruler so everything is down the competency of one guy. And if he's a fool or corrupt then the whole system is screwed. At least when a democracy goes to hell the people had a say in it. Oh and I'd agree about Monster. It's definitely an anime that explores all the facets of humanism. For me that was the big draw of the anime and manga. More than the actual story it was the side stories and things that were only tangentially connected but that drove home the themes of the anime that were the most interesting and make me realize I was watching something special.
