I can't get it; Haruhi is annoying selfish bitch who bosses people around and the whole anime isn't that great. So why people like it so much?

ps. The dance is okay though =)

edit. and yes, I have watched it all

I don't.

I mean... it's because of Haruhi's charisma. She's not like all those other high school students who think it's cool to do nothing. (This reminds me of Welcome to the NHK when he looks back on his school life, he being the main character I've forgotten the name of... Satou?).

The series itself has wtf value when in non-chronological order, and has a few funny points. It also has some philosophical value if you look at it. With themes revolving around how you spend your life. Or at least that's how I saw it xD

I love it because i find it a funny anime that has some plot and doesn't seem as episodic (sp) like most other comedy anime's i watch.

Well the main part i loved about it is Kyons narration. Always brings up chuckles from hearing from his view.

True... But Kyon and Yuki are enough reason to watch the show. And it's good, although not as good as people make it to be.

I love the fact that Kyon is actually a pretty normal guy, compaired to most anime characters. And Yuki=love

Because Haruhi subconsciously made me like her.

but also because I've never seen an anime bold enough to say God is a Japanese High School Girl who started this world 3 years ago.

lol, that's only what she seems on the outside (typical tsundere argument I guess, hehe, but it's a bit different here)

I like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya because Itsuki is a fabulous gay fag and tons of stupid fanart spawned from it. I could care less about the girls, they're annoying. Other shows are funnier, but I do have to agree the animation is sexy.

Haruhi is kawaii, pretty, beautiful, or however you want to interpret it. Attitude is definitely a no-no, but she's hardly retartded as far as her character. Her act are always unreasonable yet hilarious. That's why I love Haruhi.

I agree that Haruhi herself is a selfish bitch for the most part--I honestly can't see how she made the top three favorite character list. I grew a fond of her near the end (broadcast order, of course), but never as much as most people to seem to like her.

The show, however, I thought was very good. Kyon, Yuki, and Itsuki were wonderful characters (Kyon especially), and I honestly really loved the story. The animation was gorgeous, the music great, and the voice actors top-notch. It's not my favorite anime by far, but I'm certainly glad I watched it.

MoHS isn't the greatest thing evar in the history of evar for me, on a personal level, but I think it deserves much of its praise. My take on why:

Firstly, the sheer cleverness of it. That it makes the least bit of sense at all after being broadcast totally out of chronological order would be a significant achievement in and of itself. The fact is, it makes perfect sense, tells an interesting and complex story and comes across as extremely original in doing so. That is a very, very special thing, and it's easy to take it somewhat for granted.

The out of order thing makes a big difference, as it's much more of a hook to make you keep watching and work out how what you've learned fits the events to come, what else you will learn that will make better sense of what you've seen but not understood, and what events lead up to what you just saw. It also keeps the whole storyline fresh by gradually adding information that applies to the whole series at once; it's almost like the process of thinking up a complex story yourself.

The characters are fantastic; charismatic, credible, different, and all of them relate to one another in a fascinating way. It's also consistently funny, and it has a realistic setting that resonates well; you can imagine the events you see that little bit easier.

QFT! QFT! Damn it, isn't there a thread like this already? Yeah, some people think it is over-rated. I can understand. TMHS isn't perfect. I don't like Haruhi that much ether. Yuki and Kyon, the sheer uniqueness and it's great music and animation is what makes up THMS's positives. It has it's share of flaws too (the humor wasn't the best in my opinion and certain areas lacked quality compared to Episode 10 and 12), but overall, if you "like" this kind of stuff, then that's that.

Edit: Oh, my post is directed at the first poster, not you "YourMessageHere". THMS is in my top 5, but it will probably be replaced with Higurashi soon enough. Just thought i would point that out. I like THMS, but it is not a top fav anime.

I don't really like Haruhi as a character, and I didn't start enjoying the show until the second volume came out. I wouldn't even have picked it up if Crispin Freeman wasn't doing the dub. (Yes, I'm watching the English releases in chronological order and missing all of the groundbreaking and supposedly mind-blowing awesomeness that comes from being out of order. Whatev.)

Apology accepted. You should really see the whole thing before making such a strong remark. I think you should have said that you were dissatisfied by the first three episodes and cared not to continue on.

Its untrue to say it had no storyline, seeing as you saw only three episodes and the dubbed DVDs have four I can surmise that you were watching the fansubbed broadcast order. This may cause some confusion because it is out of chronological order. If you listen a little closer to the preview you will hear Haruhi state the chronological order of the episode while Kyon corrects her and states the broadcast order or the order in which you were watching them. The broadcast order is confusing to say the least but once you see the entire series you might see the ingenious of it. For instance, the true 7th episode is far more climatic then the melancholic, true, final episode, "Someday in the Rain." Also, the very first episode, the homemade video is actually a parody of the series.

Yet, its true The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya lacks in the comedic department but thats not what I believe draw many to Haruhiism. No one in general ever mentions this show as being mentionably funny. They always mention the characters or the ingenuity and I think thats what truly draws people to the show.
