Choose who you think is the character who is the most underrated and explain why.

For me, I choose Yamazaki. Why? Because he is one of the most funniest characters in the entire series, barely appears compared to the rest of the cast. Also the author, Hideaki Sorachi, even stated that "Yamazaki is the only character that he isn't going to put on a volume cover."

Even Hedoro got his own volume cover...

Haha it's funny that poor Yamazaki won't get on a cover xD

I voted for Kamui.. Hmm probably because I reaaaally like him but he rarely appears in the anime. He looks really strong and evil but we barely got to see him in action.

I like Katsura and Sougo the best, but I wouldn't call them "underrated". They're constantly there and everybody loves them.

Actually, Sorachi did not unfairly judge Yamazaki.
In the extra interviews, he stated that:

Yamazaki will not be put in a cover because that will ruin the character. Yamazaki is the background person whom does not stand out. He is the average normal character- the Shinpachi of the Shinsengumi. If he is put on a cover, it will kill his image. The charm of Yamazaki is the fact that he goes unnoticed.

So, basically, Sorachi does not HATE Yamazaki, in fact, he does not want him on a cover as a favor to the character himself- Yamazaki is supposed to be the average guy that nobody pays attention to, putting him on the cover will kill off that image (although it's ironic because he stands out a lot with his badminton and anpan addiction!)

as for underrated character.. You guys spoke of it in terms of appearance, but I'm going to speak in terms of 'having the least number of fans, so I'm going to go with poor Shinpachi who does not get much love even though he is an epic character (:

Katsura. He's way too rarely seen and mostly used as a buttmonkey (he makes a great buttmonkey, admittedly ;), but his true abilities were foreshadowed to be about Gintoki's level yet we never really had a chance to see what he really can do. We only glimpsed some of his abilities in the Benizakura arc, and that's about it... I really wish we saw him go all out, yet even in the latest arc he's sadly absent even though it's all about Shouyou-sensei and the past... :(

Katsura is my favourite Gintama character along as my favourite anime character in general, but I think he is not as underrated as Shinpachi or Yamazaki to be honest.

Btw, I CANNOT WAIT FOR THAT ARC IN THE ANIME.

Hey, why there aint no Hasegawa Taiyou option there? this madao is the most underrated character I believe, each episode which he is in is alwaaaaaaaaays hilarious! Somehow I am enjoying his misery. #in a humoric sense#

You should have added Shinpachi's glasses, then I would have voted what i thought was the most underrated character in Gintama. I ended up voting for Tsukuyo because I loved both arcs she was in and i think she is one of the sexiest anime anime characters eva.

Voted for Yamazaki. Even though he was designed to be underrated.

Lol now I almost feel like taking it back and giving it to Shinpachi. He's got 130 member favorites on here and he's a damn main character. For the amount of screen time he gets you could totally argue that he's underrated. Poor Patsuan.


I hate spoilers, but :(. I will forever cry in my need for more serious Zura and Sorachi refusing to give it to me.

Edit: I just noticed who else is missing from the list (other than Madao). Hattori Zenzo. Yep I think my vote might have gone to him. Actually, if you think about it, the list of reoccurring characters that don't show up too often but are awesome is pretty big. Sakamoto? Toujou? Shogun? Takasugi's crew? Also, Otose, Tama.... well I'm getting carried away with this.

I say Tsukki. Shinpachi would be my next choice though!

I'm sensing a real Hasegawa bias right now not even getting to be a part of the poll. I know he's a Maedo but they are people too.




One of my biggest laugh out loud moments from the second season. I really love Maedo's seiyuu as well. He also does all the narration for Kaiji which gives him extra awesome points.

Shinpachi. Despite being a main character there are a lot minor characters who quite a lot more fan than him.

I voted Hasegawa but I think Abuto and Mutsu are the most underrated characters

I don't even like Shinpachi even though he is a main character. And if that poll episode used the real poll results then he's even more underrated since he gets more screen time than most of the people before him.

i like Shinpachi , :D Mostly because he's kind of the only rational one in the yorozuya , wouldn't be the same without him

It wouldn't be the same without him. But he dropped in my list alot with his Otsu obsessiveness, not letting any guy in his group have a girlfriend, and then tried to get one the same day. And during the otaku battle between Toushi and Shinpachi, I believed Toushi was in the right and Shinpachi's reasons made me want to puke.

true , Toushi's reason was much more valid but at the end of the arc you gotta admit what Shinpachi did was pretty cool

Yeah but I still don't support his reason for fighting, which makes anything he does not as cool.

regardless it was a pretty amazing arc lol, Taka-tin makes me laugh everytime
