Pretty decent indeed, I preferred the full series adaptation more though, in this ova the setting does feel slightly different with the family still living with him and that only his childhood friend comes in the picture. But the amount of action and decent pace still has been kept! So well for a short ova as this the story sure developed pretty well!

Not bad for a short OVA plus it's made by Madhouse and it's by miles better than the Moe crap we get nowadays.

According to my sources this one was scripted by Kawajiri too (in addition to direction), but for all purposes it looks like the first time it was actually directed by him. So much more effort went into the style of this episode, it really shows.

Decode is basically just a retelling (and embellished story) HOWEVER the first season drags imo, and focuses mainly on Tsutomu's school romance, whereas season 2 is fantastic, and more extra-terrestrial. Such action, such emotion, such wow

I wish I had an inner hot girl encouraging me to look at porn, but I don't really need much encouragement ^_^

This was a great final OAV. Good action again, no idea why but it seemed even bigger. The way it hints at a possible later relation between the heroes and the japanese police was interesting.

5/5

A good action show with pleasant touches of humour. Nothing special but everything came out together to make a fine product.
The charadesign was very nice, keeping Masami Yûki's style. And Konno Mitsuishi (Sailor Moon, Eva) is always good as an action woman.

Score: 7/10

Not a bad ending, they managed to save the town from becoming super soldier monsters.
I wanted a little more information regarding the Space Federation or some of the other aliens but I guess I cant be too picky since it's only a 4 episode OVA.

Overall this show was pretty entertaining allthough I kinda hoped for more.

There are a lot of questions left unanswered, but for a short OVA, the likable main characters and cool fight scenes (and the main conflict in general) make up for its shortcomings.

What I always preferred about the original Birdy the Mighty to the 2010 Decode was the greater 'naturalism'; the family in Decode has changed the sister into a drinky oneesan and removed the parents from the picture, while in the 196 OVA Tsutomu is raiding his antagonistic sister's closet for women's clothing to wear while his dad expresses casual disappointment in everything about Tsutomu. Take from this what allegory you will.

Birdy isn't risking blowing her cover by moonlighting as an otaku idol either. I wish the Unit 731 plot could have been revisited in Decode, but maybe the reminder of Japanese war crimes was too hot for TV. In terms of scenario I think the original beats the first season of the otaku-influenced remake handily.

I enjoyed seeing the nuance within the bad guys faction; the conflict between Gomez and Hikawa who had their own goals. The animation in this OVA is fabulous, I particularly enjoyed Birdy's gleeful faces as she punches her opponents into pieces.

Tsutomu got quite the shockingly good hairstyle at the end
Pretty good short ova series, kinda wished they delved more into the space federation and stuff, quite a lot of unanswered question. Looking forward to watching the decode series

Several last episode thoughts on the whole OVA.
1. If you don't know about it, don't look up Unit 731 in Google.... not pleasant.
2. Birdy was truly Red, White, and Blue in theme.....pretty well done artwork.
3. Revi is still hot after 24 years
4. Not a bad anime....nothing groundbreaking, but a good 7/10 and no regrets.

It is suppose to be an OVA to advertise the source material. I respect all that it covered. It was a great watch and I am looking forward to watching the full adaptation.
