Okay, I know I sound like I'm whining now, and I probably am... and I'm also probably posting this in the wrong place/ reposting (apologies) but here's my latest annoyance:

Tried to change my name to "Hotaru" just now, account was already taken.
So tried to change it to "Firefly"... once again. Taken.

Looked up the accounts. Neither of them were active. They had both been made in 2007 and never touched. In fact, "Firefly" didn't even have any entries.

My opinion is these accounts should be deleted just to make things cleaner. I know that Mods can't go around deleting every dead account, but maybe if requested specifically they can look into it and then delete it to make up room for users that want to use that name.

So yes, sorry for sounding like a Housewife, but these trivial things annoy me.

(I was really looking forward to that Username. :( Mooouuuuuu!)

I had problem like this when i created and after that changed my user name. I don't think you can do anything about it but if mods are agree to free account on request if they really are dead, let me know. :D i will find one for myself.

First rule of forums on the internet, never get rid of ANY accounts, because it diminishes the site's epenis size eh.

Good luck liberating the name though.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Yeah, if I happen to go inactive on MAL for a a few years, I still want my list =p. It would be a pain to remake it.

But I do think that maybe if you don't log in for a long time, your name should become blank and someone else can take the username.

I always think numbers on the end of names looks really tacky.

Isn't that what the export function is for? You can just save your list?

And anyway, this isn't about just being inactive. These people haven't even added entries!? -_-
No.

I'd agree that names that have never added an entry should be deleted after a certain amount of time...say 6 months. It would be fairly easily to set a cron job to take care of it automatically.

Outside of that though, regardless of how long the inactivity I don't think they should be deleted as long as it was once active and making their username blank isn't very practical as a solution in terms of database management or php/js. Good luck with the name change though I guess. I'm sure you'll come up with something creative.

6 months is a bit short if you ask me.
Some people get their computer down for longer.
They should just clean up the people who had no activity what so ever for a LONG time like those people in 2007. Or MAL can send emails to those people, if they don't do anything delete account.

6 months might be slightly short, but if I were to create an account and not use it at all, I'd probably forget about it in 6 months, computer failure or not. In any case, a year for those with no posts or entries at all seems more than enough, and maybe something can be done for those below 10 shows too, if said shows have been added on registration day, for example a 2 year term. When it comes to old accounts whose shows have only been added on reg day, you don't even have to delete them, just scramble names with less than 2 numbers in them, and restore them on request if the user comes back (after a single day of use and 2 years of disuse, few will).

My list!? My views!? My post count!? My profile page!? My clubs!? My friends!? Exporting wont save everything, I'm lazy, I wouldn't want to do everything over again! :(

But yeah I know what you mean. lol

This is fine... considering adding one entry isn't the hardest thing to do in the world. The only reason I'm against account deletion after a certain amount of time is because I'm sure as I get older my interest for Anime may diminish therefore I wouldn't be going on as often. (shet who knows how long I'll be inactive) THOUGH if Anime sparks my interests one day and I decide to go back to it I would still want my account to be alive yenno?

He's not referring to users who were active but now are on hiatus, he's talking about removing the accounts that are completely inactive and empty since the day they were created. Those people who signed in 3 years ago and never added anything to their profile surely aren't going to be active all of a sudden. They most likely signed up on a whim, then completely forgot about MAL. They probably don't even remember to have an account on this site, and if they do, it means they have no intention of becoming active members, so why should they be kept here? They are a waste of space and usernames.
Of course, deleting accounts who are currently inactive but actually have something in them is out of question. In fact, the OP is talking about accounts that were never used, and I agree with him.
If deleting them is not possible, or the mods think it would be too harsh, then

Its not fair to the other who got their name first. Theres no confirming that an account is dead.

I stopped playing neopets for like 8 years went back and still had my account. This is because it wasn't deleted.

How would you feel one of them came back and found that they lost their name?

Agreed. The inactive users who don't have any list added should have an email warning of account deletion within 6 months. If they don't respond it should get deleted.
For those who have entries they should be mailed as well with a warning of deletion. But depending on the amount of entries would be the amount of time they should be able to keep it. Ex : 50 entries = 1 year, 100 entries =2 years, 200 entries 3 years, 300 entries = 5 year, 400 entries = perma? Or something along those lines. Logging in once or adding an entry will reset the countdown to deletion. Though I doubt it'll happen. At least delete those who have no list....I mean this site was meant to have a list in the 1st place.

The issue with those exact guidelines is that there are MAL users with a number of posts (even 1000+) that either have no lists, incomplete lists, or just don't maintain their lists.

DarkShards' solution -- getting your username voided after a period of inactivity -- is the best one.

Sure, why not? If they aren't being used or haven't been used they're just clutter.

They haven't made a list or posted in the forums. Giving the account or outright deleting it is a problem.... why?

I wanted to have Fumoffu as my name when I joined, but it was taken. Apart from I see no users with Fumoffu as their name. I searched and got close, -fumoffu-, but that's not the same is it? So I searched for their profile directly, and well, the funny thing is that the person has a list, but not a profile. Makes no sense does it? Well:

Anime list: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Fumoffu

Profile? :http://myanimelist.net/profile/Fumoffu

What's up with that?

Try something creative next time; those are too common names; though, your name, as of now, is decent enough. Anyhow, every forum basically suffers (if I can even call that) from this condition. I know because I've moderated one full of old inactive accounts. Still, it doesn't mean there's any need for clearance of those accounts since no forum would want their memebers' numbers purged, at least in my opinion.

It'd be too harsh, too, since you can't decide when those users might just return and be back with a bang--with some enormous activity along with them--to, eventually, make the forum better and more interesting. Whether it's 6 months or more, you can't decide.

Having said all that, Xinil can do anything. Its his forum, afterall.

I Agree and Disagree. I was inactive for about a year after I joined but then I started to use MAL alot more, so if they had started deleting accounts I would have been pretty frustrated. But if the account hasn't been used in like 3 or more years then yeah I agree just delete it.

If they were truly never really active, have no posts in clubs or other forums, and are basically empty accounts, you can try to appeal to a database mod to get the account deleted. I did this with an account that had been inactive for 4 years and the mod deleted it, freeing up my current username.

Spending money to improve the site would not result in lots more people joining it; this website has a niche audience and very little competition from other sites.

If you wanted to make money from this website you would want to limit expenditure as best you can without putting people off coming altogether.

I know as much about this website's finances as you do. What I do have though is a bit of common sense and a solid grounding in reality.

That is why I am able to see why this website would not make lots of money, and you are not.
