Pretty far off from now since it's coming out in 2013 but I'm looking foward to this series next month. After watching the PV, it does look a little like K-ON being that it's from KyoAni.

Its the same character designer who did both series.

I'm laughing at people freaking out about fanservice. It's KyoAni, they hardly do any (sexual) fanservice, ever. Odds are it'll be just like a normal episode of the show, except the girls will be in swimsuits. OH THE HORROR, HIDE YOUR WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

Anyway, Hyouka was obviously my #1 most anticipated show of spring, and it's nice to know there will be at least one episode beyond however many air on TV. I'll have to keep an eye out for the manga volume that includes this and remember to import it alongside the BDs of the show.

The actual artistic style is completely different though. Both are utterly gorgeous in their own ways, but still different.

I thought this was going to be an Episode 0 which would have been nice since the first episode isn't airing until pretty late in the season.

Oh well.

I thought I'd heard 22, but yeah it's slightly short (for two cour) either way. But it's KyoAni, I'm sure there will be at minimum one extra BD ep, if not two. I'm just happy it's two cour and not one.

We'll know more when the BDs get solicited... hopefully all at once and not piecemeal.

As long as there is an equal amount of fanservice between the girls and the boys, I will be happy.

This actually looks really interesting. I'm looking forward to it, even the pool ep. ^^

But that PV... I thought it was a horror show at first. So much for repressed memories, NGE End of Eva DVD menu, lol... >.>

between the girls and the boys? i think your idea of fanservice is a bit off ;s

Fanservice is gender neutral, but it's sensible to expect this show is aimed more at males, yes.

The problem is not them freaking out about fanservice, the problem is WHY are they freaking out about fanservice. it's like a kid freaking out about his mom giving him candy.

I don't have an issue with someone preferring there be no or little fanservice. After all, not everyone likes candy. While I enjoy most fanservice, there are some shows I think benefit most when they minimize or eliminate it (PapaKiki for example), or that would be better if they had less. On the other hand, some shows I wish had more.

What is ridiculous, though, is the outrageously disproportionate reactions the mere mention of the word 'fanservice' gets. People read one word from dtshyk and take that as a sign that any hopes they had for the show need to be thrown into a fire, or act like it's going to turn into an episode of QB or Kanokon or something. Please. The most fanservice (of the sexual titillation variety) KyoAni has ever done is Haruhi's occasional cosplay escapades with Mikuru. And you'd need to dig a bit to come up with second place.

Hell I don't think the original scan even mentions the word "fanservice" (unless its cut off in the scan), that's just dtshyk's wording. It just says that there was an incident at the pool and the club members will be investigating in their swimsuits. So we'll get a couple well-drawn bikini shots at most. Big fucking deal.

Yup, there are tons of animes with topless guys too and we don't complain, where's equality?

Well, not sure about tons, but they do exist. So does complaining about them, though. Look in any announcement thread about a BL or otomege adaptation and you'll see plenty of "ew gross" and "ugh BL" and "crappy fujoshi bait anime" comments. It can get pretty bad.

i don't know man, complaining about ecchi...that's kind of stupid if you ask me lol.

Really depends on the show though, right? Complaining about ecchi/fanservice/nudity in Queen's Blade or Kanokon or High School DxD would be ridiculous, sure. But it's not always appropriate in some other shows. Like, Usagi Drop does not need fanservice in my opinion. Know what I mean?

It also depends on how much/what kinds of fanservice. Cute girls in swimsuits in Hyouka? That sounds totally acceptable to me. If it turned into bikini mud wrestling with dissolving clothes and full nudity, maaaaybe that'd be over the top for a story that, as far as I can tell, isn't at all intended to be an ecchifest. =P

And critical is whether it's executed well. This is so important... Uncreative, lazy, poorly drawn fanservice can be unappealing even in a show where one expects fanservice. Fanservice is so much better when effort is put into it. I find Nisemonogatari and Touka Gettan a lot hotter than, say, Maken-ki.

So there's totally room for critiquing the use and prevalence of fanservice in a show. I don't have a problem with people doing that. I just dislike the instant, knee-jerk reflexive rejection of even the slightest hint of fanservice, with no attention paid to its context in the show or to questions of target audience.

That's so well said. Another good example is Hanasaku Iroha with the slight fanservice like Nako at that episode when she was swimming with her clothes on to save you know who and Ohana's bondage. Even though the show wasn't meant to be ecchi at all, they included some very nice fanservice moments.

I don't understand the hatred towards fanservice. It's not like it will be part of the TV series. If you don't want to see it, guess what? You don't have to. You wont miss a thing by skipping it.

Also, fanservice is self-explanatory. I myself love animes that feature beach eps to change the mood/pacing, and just to see the chicks showing some skin. Steins;Gate for example is an anime I wish had atleast an OVA of it. Kurisu in a swimsuit sounds so delicious :D. Ruka in a swimsuit also? Many lawls could be had there.

Fanservice is there to appeal to fans. Obviously since it's done so much it means it's popular in Japan, which by the way is the MAIN audience. Though TBH I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to see female characters in any show show skin.

Anyway, this series looks to have amazing quality. As expected of KyoAni. Can't wait.
