Had my heart ripped out three times by this man!!! First, Voices (seriously, even as a man I have to admit I almost cried during this one. VERY CLOSE!!!) !! Then, the Place Promised!! And now, 5 Centimeters, which I knew what was coming and yet I still wished it didn't happen!! I hate Makoto Shinkai and at the same time I love him and his work. So which is it for you? The one most dear. Voices, Place Promised, 5 Centimeters, or did She and Her Cat steal your heart? I am curious for the results to this one. So please, tell me. Torn between Voices and 5 Centimeters. But forced to choose, I say.... ummmm... seriously, I want to say both.... but.... AHHHHHH!!!! Voices of a Distant Star!! There I said it. I seriously think I should not have posted this thread on account that being forced to choose between masterpieces could cause heart failure. haha. |

Hoshi no Koe~ well, I haven't seen all three parts of byosoku 5cm yet but, out of the three I have seen Voices wins by far. but judging by the first part of 5cm/sec, it looks like there's a very high chance it won't be tops for long. |

I preferred Place Promised better because it had a much stronger story than Byousoku and the Sci-Fi element was not at all a repulsive element, in fact it embellished it magnificently. But even Byousoku is beautiful in itself. All his movies just makes me aware that my loneliness is nothing compared to these fictional characters... But its just a bliss to watch his movies and to listen to Tenmon's 天門 music. |

I voted 5cm, though I absolutely love all of his works. His 3 feature length works are in my top 10. |

I'll have to go with my favorite movie, 5 cm. While I also love all his other works, nothing quite comes close to the feeling I get when watching that. Also, I believe both the animation and the soundtrack to be superior compared to the others, and I preferred the calm stories to all the sci-fi elements in Voices and Place Promised. |

For me it would be 5 Centimeters Per Second. This movie was really good and the art was stunning. [IMG]http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7425/userbar11.jpg[/ IMG][/ url] |

I voted 5 Centimeter Per Second. For me, it was more stunning on the emotional realm. The feeling of loneliness really came through. |

5 centimeters per second wins out for me. Voices was great, but Shinkai definitely does better without the scifi element. His most beautiful scenes were all in 5cm/s, and I think it was a lot more powerful in the end. Voices has a lot of it's own merits though. A half our of general perfection. ![]() |

If he were to have made 5cm when he made Voices, and made Voices recently rather than 5cm (if you switched them basically), then Voices would be the one with 'his most beautiful scenes'. So i think thats a moot point to make. That goes for the majority of the people posting in the thread as well. |

Animation quality is part of that evaluation. Shinkai did in fact get better, and thus, 5cm/s has better animation, which is one of its strongest points.winsomemastix said: His most beautiful scenes were all in 5cm/s. So i think thats a moot point to make. That goes for the majority of the people posting in the thread as well. But if it pleases you, I can give some other points as well. The soundtrack of 5 centimeters was simply unrivaled. Tenmon really went all out with it. Voices had a great soundtrack, but not quite at the same level. Furthermore, I think Shinkai did better to remove the scifi element from 5cm/s that he'd included in Voices. The symbols and metaphors he used in 5cm/s made it seem almost poetic. It was easily more thought provoking than Voices was. I hate to say it, but unfortunately, you can't dumb down 5cm/s just because you think it's unfair to evaluate it based on Shinkai's improvement. We're trying to pick his best, so if he got better, that has to be part of the evaluation. ![]() |

Too hard to chose just one, but I'll go with Voices of a Distant Star. But The Place Promised in Our Early Days is next. Oh I love all of his works! |

5 Centimeters Per Second. The beautiful animation aside, the story was extremely accessible and I connected with it on a personal level. The ending was so powerful that it was at the forefront of my mind a good week after watching it the first time and it still haunts me. |
