| Probably the answer could seem predictable but perhaps it's not. During these years I've been a manga fan, I've got to know many yaoi fans (girls) and most of them during their lives have had homosexual relationships soon after discovering yaoi. I don't think yaoi manga can actually change one's sexuality, but it is an odd coincidence that so many yaoi fans declared themselves bi/homosexual/sexually confused. So, what do you think about it? |

| No not really, I know a bunch of fangirls (and myself) who enjoy yaoi but are a s straight as arrows, but then again that's only friends in my grade so I'm not sure....but no I don't think so. |

Currently most popular version is genetic but than it doesn't explain switches from one identity to other or fact that it's rather continuum than just those 4 identities (hereto- homo- bi- asexual). I don't think men who watch lesbo porn care about the sentimental side of the movie (if it has such a side, and I'm doubtful about it), while I think most girls, reading yaoi, are interested not only in the "porn" parts but also in the romantic scenes. If they don't care about the sentimental part of the manga, then they should whatch a gay porn instead. When I read a BL manga I focus more on the romantic scenes, on feelings and emotions. In order to enjoy a BL manga the reader has to identify himself with one of the main characters, and maybe it's because of this that even a het person can see love from a different point of view. Reading a BL, perhaps a good one and not a PWP/stupid/plotless one, can open one's mind. | i don't see how any medium of entertainment shifts your sexuality. I personally believe if your gay or bi and don't know it yet you may discover it because of of such a form of entertainment. I wouldn't say it influences you, but maybe it allows you to realize it.I'm straight so i can't really say for sure. |

| I don't think so. It perhaps can change your view to homosexuality (and perhaps, fetish?), but not changing your sexuality. Repeating what peoples here said, if someone straight but ends up gay or lesbian, big chance they are bisexual but didn't realize it beforehand and they came to it since their view has changed and they accept their sexuality more. :) |

| While I don't think yaoi will affect a person's sexuality, I think it has the potential (however small) to make someone unhappy with their own gender. For instance over time they may find the idea of being the dominant male more appealing than being the one getting pounded. And I'm not just pulling this out of my ass, I used to be friends with a girl who read a lot of yaoi, and she eventually told me she wanted to be a man for that very reason. And she wasn't just some crazy obsessive fangirl either, over time she just found the idea of sex as a man more appealing. Whether or not she would have come to the same conclusion had she not read yaoi at all, I don't really know. |

And to stay on topic; no, reading yaoi won't normally change a persons sexuality. It just doesn't work like that. Seriously. Watching and/or enjoying a story about a same-sex couple in a relationship(with or without sex) doesn't make me gay. |

| I find that a lot of girls who say they are bi do it for attention. I suppose if you're reading something gay then it becomes something you can accept more easily and then you consider you're own sexuality (where you might not have otherwise). |

I'm not usually into the whole yaoi/yuri genres or anything but I've read mangas of both and I'm perfectly straight, as well as having experimented as well with another girl, still straight. I don't think there is anything that can change someone's sexuality at all, if I see a woman who I think is sexy, it doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to turn into a lesbian D: |

Granted some gay people probably read these as well because it pertains to them, but the stuff is mainly marketed to those straight who want to see their favorite gender get it on in an otherwise impossible situation (because most Yaoi with plot and drama has male characters who act like flowers). Again, it's mainly drawn by women for women, not for gay couples, so i don't see it changing someone's sexuality. I can see someone realizing their sexuality if perhaps they were male and read Yaoi, but not the other way around. I'm sure there are rare cases, but for the majority i doubt this is the case. |
