I thought we needed something to discuss some of the better romance anime. There really aren't any guidelines, just feel free to discuss whatever romance you saw last, and if you suggest it to anybody else here.

Just some starting ideas: Clannad, Air, Rumbling Hearts, Myself;Yourself, Lovely Complex, Itazura na Kiss, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Nobura Sora, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka, True Tears, Koi Kaze, ef - a tale of memories/melodies, etc.

I'm hoping activity might be a bit more frequent if we try something like this.

I finished watching Myself;Yourself recently, and I thought it was really great, but I have a few complications. I really feel it could have been more amazing if they added another ten or so episodes rather than skipping ten years in five minutes. Also, some of the characters got quite a bit of characterization moments in their own episodes, and a few are very unimportant or disappear. Does anybody else agree?

Lol, welcome to the truth of short series romance. If the series is based off a manga then your best bets are to just read the manga (I did that with School Days, Elfen Lied, and I plan to do it with School Rumble).

If I was going to discuss all of the anime you listed here/what I'm watching I think it'd be a major spoiler for anyone who reads it if they haven't seen it. I can't remember anything about Myself;Yourself other than the mailbox and her recital at the end. Have you seen H2O? I'm too lazy to check your list Khaos, sorry, lol, but if you want to discuss controversy in a series with similar art that is my 2cents right there, man, lol. I'm open to discuss anything though, just shoot something at me.

5 Centimeters per Second was the only anime that really had the need to skip ten or more years in a short amount of time. It was sad, but it would have been better off in more detail as a series than an hour-long movie.

I've heard of H2O, But have never seen it.

I read School Days as a manga. I actually preferred the anime. More mentally disturbing ending I guess. If you really need to disclose a spoiler when discussing something, just put a warning above a spoiler tag/box/thingamajig.

Does Elfen Lied really count as a romance? It has some elements here and there, but they never came together. School Rumble's ending of the anime REALLY managed to piss me off, but not enough to stop me from liking it. :)

I'll have more anime opinions once I start my romance marathon.

I completely forgot what 5 Cm/Second was about, but I know I didn't appreciate it as a majority of other users have.

Watch H2O and you'll understand what I mean when it comes to complications. I agree with you though, I preferred School Day's anime more than the manga because it had a more emotional impact on me. If I read the manga first I'm not sure what I would have thought, but in the Sekai FC here on MAL (since I'm a Sekai lover) we discussed alternate endings in the forums there and I posted my ideal ending there a couple years ago.

I consider Elfen Lied a romance, although it's not obvious that there's love in the air, the romance aspects of the series was beautiful imo because it portrayed genuine love, care, and affection. They didn't just slap that shit on there at the end of the series and labeled it as a romance, I believe it was well developed into a romance as the series progressed
I don't know if you've read the manga, but if you enjoyed the series and wanted a way better ending then the manga is the way to go.

I see what you mean about Elfen Lied now. It's definitely not your typical romance, but I suppose it did well in that light.

Damn you Sekai. I vote for Kotonoha. If forget how to make spoiler tabs, so I'll give it a few tries before I put anything lethal to people who don't know what happens in a series.

Ok then.

This is out of the blue, but did you know about Air's ending

I watched both, forgot wth both were mainly about, but I know what you mean. I was super confused about a lot of stuff in that series/movie, lol. I think it's been over three years since I've seen it though, haha. Maybe if I were to rewatched it I'd understand it better, but I'm too lazy to do such a thing right now.

I see. I'm hooked on the art in ef now. It's sort of trippy almost, but still very comprehensible. It's definitely unique. I think I prefer the art in Myself;Yourself and True Tears and such still. School Days was TOO dark.

I think that's why I like School Days a lot. it stirs up a lot of emotions (not necessarily nice ones) really well. Myself;Yourself, True Tears, H2O and sola all have the same kind of art. Another series is Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka which is more of a sister complex thing, but it was still alright imo.

I've seen Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka as well. Not really that heavy on emotions compared to the usual romance.

I've pretty much seen every one of those except H2O.

I finished ef - a tale of memories. It's my favorite series so far. If melodies keeps up with it, that's likely to be one of my favorites as well. The art catches my eye most, but the characters are great and fit in an amazing storyline, (rather, storylines) and had an amazing soundtrack to ice the cake. The towering, majestic cake.

I agree, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka left me with kind of a, okay, so basically nothing happens and we're left with a cliff hanger -_-. It had potential to be a heavy romance but that's not what they went for apparently *shrug*.

I loved memories more than melodies. ef - melodies is more of a prequel and to memories and develops/explains some of the other characters. Hiro Hiro and Miya Miya are such a great couple, lol, I love their story. I rewatched that phone booth scene like 20 times, hahaha. I told you the soundtrack is amazing, melodies has my favorite soundtrack among the two seasons though, omg, the music is so good, lol.

I can't find the OST anywhere for memories. Well, I did find it, but it was rar, and my unrar is throwing a fit right now apparently. It just froze up after ten minutes of loading.

Shuffle! is almost ready for after ef melodies, but melodies isn't quite ready either, so I may just watch Freezing overnight while I still have it. Apparently the fanservice is beyond Girls Bravo, but I think I got over fanservice altogether while watching THAT.

Know what I don't get? The hype about Clannad After Story. I did think After Story was great, until towards the end. Once (Don't open if you haven't seen After Story)

I honestly liked the first season better....

I don't remember where I got the soundtrack from. I really liked Shuffle! since it went in favor of the girl I wanted, haha.

As for Clannad ~After Story~ hands down I like ~AS~ way more. The whole drama of joining society and being in the real world while overcoming problems as a couple is beautiful and I like it way more than another high school romance (which I still adore). That's why I keep telling you to watch Itazura na Kiss, lmao.

Have you ever read the Tomoyo Dear Shining Memories manga? It picks up right after Tomoyo's OVA. I felt like crying when I watched ~AS~ but after reading her arc, omfg, it's wayyyy better imo. I love their story arc way more and if they animated it I'd probably cry like a baby, lol. It's a beautiful story and it has the feeling of

Doki is translating the visual novel and I'm so excited about that, lol. Tomoyo x Tomoya is one of my ALL TIME favorite couples

DAMN IT ALL!!!

A Tomoyo and nothing for Kyou?!

Oh well. I didn't even know they continued the Tomoyo arc in the first place, so nothing new. The one part of After Story that really got to me was Ushio. I didn't much care for anything else.

Another reason I liked Clannad more is that

I know high school romance is overused. That's why I love Rumbling Hearts. ef didn't seem a high school romance so much either, which is good. It almost avoided the school on many occasions, and I like that descision. Not sure about melodies yet, of course. Itazura na Kiss does sound good, and it'll most likely be after Arakawa Under The Bridge when I have nothing literally "planned" to watch yet, even though I have three or four others.

Hey, don't get me wrong, Kyou is for me, Tomoyo is for Tomoya, lmao.

Ohhh yeah, I really loved Ushio in ~AS~, she's so adorable and well behaved, hahaha.

High school romance is over-used, but that's because it's a solid genre that appeals to a wide audience. Rumbling Hearts was one of my first romance series I ever watched and my all time favorite series. I wrote a review for it a little while back and I think it's rated 3rd most helpful unless that has changed. The thing I like about it is that although it was a short series, I don't think any time was wasted in the whole series, the development was pretty well done given how long it is, and the drama is fantastic. Itazura na Kiss and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien are my favorite dramas right now.

I don't consider ef to be much of a high school romance either. 1) Miya and Hiro skip all the freaking time and live alone, and 2) the alternate couples (girl with eye patch/twin) aren't even seen in school, lol. I haven't been able to watch as much anime as I want to due to the fact I'm at shits end with my classes, but hopefully I'll find some time later on.

Fail. Chihou or whatever in ef DID go to the school. Don't you remember the scene in the library and about getter her a school uniform and such?

I've seen the OVA for Tomoyo and Kyou. Kyou wins.

I'd never get along with her in real life though lol. I'd get pissed faster than I'd like if she were always that violent.

Essentially, if the romance is specifically designed for romance, it can do fine with twelve or so episodes, but if there is another recurring theme, like in Myself;Yourself
and the whole Pandoras fighting Nova idea in Freezing, you need more episodes. 50 is always welcome as in Clannad. If they could just continue Lovely Complex! I loved that anime!

I remember them being in school uniforms but its been years since I saw the series. The main setting for them though isn't at school I think, I recall it being that train stop.

I was actually disappointed with Kyou's OVA, I was really excited when they announced it being released and it was one of the things I looked forward to, but when I finally watched it I was hoping for so much more. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed the OVA, but I liked Tomoyo's way more, it was more emotional imo. It feels like they rushed through Kyou's arc way too fast, which I can understand since it's just an OVA, but it didn't have the same effect on me like Tomoyo's.

I'm actually watching Lovely Complex right now, but it's on hold (along with others) due to me having a lot of school work to take care of.

I may be at your watching rate right now then too. I've just started listening to Vocaloid stuffs again and I've realized just how much there is.

I did finish Freezing, and I'll watch ef a tale of melodies eventually. I gots Chobits yesterday in the mail.

The true plot of School Days is boats. And I suggest Honey and Clover if you haven't watched it yet.

I've been hearing a lot of Honey and Clover lately. The art on the cover reminds me of Fruits Basket. Just sweet and simple.
