Welcome to the chess club, where fellow students can battle each other in the game of chess.

(This club within a club is still under heavy construction, so please bear with me)

Come in and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that this room provides and enjoy playing some chess while catching up with some people.

You can play different variants of chess in this club, the different types are as follows

• Chess with different starting positions
  
  
  Chess960 (or Fischer Random Chess): the placement of the pieces on the first rank is randomized, and the pieces on the eighth rank mirror it.
  Displacement chess: some pieces in the initial position are exchanged but the rules remain exactly the same. Some examples of this may be that the king and queen are flipped, or the knight on the b-file is traded with the bishop on the f-file.
  Pre-Chess: proposed by Pal Benko in 1978. The game starts with white and black pawns set as usual, but the initial position of other pieces is selected by the players in the following way: First, White places one of his pieces on his first rank, and then Black does the same. Players continue to alternate in this manner until all pieces have been placed. (The only restriction being, bishops must be placed on opposite-color squares.) Then the game proceeds in the usual way. Castling is permitted only if the king and a rook were placed on their usual squares.
  Transcendental chess: similar to Chess960, but the opening white and black positions do not mirror each other.
  Upside-down chess: the black and white pieces are switched so that all the pawns are one step away from promotion
  
  
  
• Chess with different forces
  
  
  Dunsany's chess (or Horde chess): one side has standard chess pieces, and the other side has 32 pawns.
  Handicap chess (or Chess with odds): variations to equal chances of players with different strength.
  Pawns game: in the starting position White has no queen but eight additional pawns. The game was played by such old masters as Labourdonnais, Deschappelles and Kieseritsky.
  Peasant's revolt: by R.L. Frey (1947). White has a king and eight pawns (the peasants) against king, pawn and four knights by Black (the nobles).
  Weak!: White has usual pieces, Black has one king, seven knights and sixteen pawns. This game was played at Columbia University chess club in the 1960s.
  
  
  
• Chess with different boards
  
  
  Active Chess: played on a 9×8 board, an extra queen with an extra pawn in front. By G. Kuzmichov (1989), his students tested the game, deciding optimum startup was to place the second queen on the eighth or ninth files.
  Alice Chess: by V. R. Parton; played with two boards. A piece moved on one board passes "through the looking glass" onto the other board.
  Cheshire Cat Chess: after each move, the square vacated "disappears" from the chessboard. Pieces may not occupy disappeared squares, but may pass through them. By V. R. Parton.
  Circular chess: played on a circular board consisting of four rings, each of sixteen squares.
  Cubic Chess: a 3D variant similar to Raumschach but played on a 6×6×6 board. Each player has six pieces and 12 pawns. By V. R. Parton.
  Cylinder chess: played on a cylinder board with a- and h-files "connected". Thus a player can use them as if the a-file were next to the h-file (and vice versa).
  Chess Attack: played on a six row, five columns board, Chess Attack follows standard chess rules, and can be regarded as an endgame variant.
  Doublewide chess: two or four regular chess boards are connected (for a 16×8 or 16×16 play surface) and each player plays with two complete sets of chess pieces. Because each player has two kings, the first king can be captured without ending the game.
  Flying chess: played on a board of 8×8×2, giving a total of 128 cells. Only certain pieces can move to and from the additional level.
  Gravity chess: rules are the same as in regular chess, except that all pieces are gravitationally "attracted" to the h-file (or a-file, depending on variants). This means that whenever there is free space between a piece and the h-file, the piece moves as far as it can to the h-file until the free space runs out.
  Grid chess: the board is overlaid with a grid of lines. For a move to be legal, it must cross at least one of these lines.
  Hexagonal chess: a family of chess variants played on a hexgrid with three colours and three bishops.
  Infinite chess: has a board shaped like the infinity symbol. It is connected at the center, and all pieces of the traditional chess are used.
  Lord Loss chess: played on five different boards with two players. One person moves a piece on any board and his/her opponent can choose to move on a different or the same board. The game is featured in the book Lord Loss by Darren Shan.
  Los Alamos chess (or Anti-Clerical chess): played on a 6×6 board without bishops. This was the first chess-like game played by a computer program.
  Millennium chess: similar to Doublewide chess. Two boards are connected side by side; however, in this variant the middle files are merged, making a 15×8 board.
  Millennium 3D Chess: by William D'Agostino; an easy-to-learn 3D variant played on a 8×8×3 board.
  Minichess: a family of chess variants played with regular chess pieces and standard rules, but on a smaller board.
  Polgar Superstar Chess: hexagonal variant played on a special, star-shaped board. It was invented by László Polgár in 2002.
  Raumschach: called "the classic 3D game" (Pritchard). Played on a 5×5×5 board, including a new piece (the unicorn) for moving through cube vertices.
  Singularity chess: played on a board distorted in the center. Due to the distortion, some pieces can make U-turns, attack the same square multiple ways, and bishops can possibly change square colors (e.g., starting on a black square and ending on a white square).
  Tri-D Chess (or Star Trek chess): the 3D version of chess depicted in the television series Star Trek. Rulesets created by fans.
  Tweedle Chess (or Twin Orthodox Chess): played on a 10×10 board, each side has an additional king and queen. Win by mating either enemy king.

Sokurunde and Eukina Watashi

Sokurunde and Eukina walked into the newly created club, in which Sokurunde was president. He originally wanted Eukina to be president, but after arguing for ten minutes, he gave in.

Sokurunde looked around at the room while Eukina went to a nearby chess board to play Sokurunde.

Sokurunde joined her and they both played each other, Sokurunde waiting for more people to join.

Reisuke Einswei: A few minutes after leaving the dorms Reisuke wanders back over to the school to check out the clubs. Seeing that there was only one club at the time he goes to check it out. Hmm the chess club. . . . sounds fun to me. Opening the door Reisuke introduces himself, "Hello chess club members, My name is Reisuke Einswei and i was wondering if you guys would be interested in a new member." actually looking around the room he only notices 2 other people inside. wow i guess this is what happens when u have a new club.

Sokurunde and Eukina Watashi

Sokurunde nodded at Reisuke and said, "Sure thing! We need more members than just two people. You can play against Eukina while I go check out other things."

Eukina smiled and replaced all the pieces to their original locations.

Sokurunde went to the back to get some more chairs and set them in different areas along with chess boards.

Reisuke Einswei: Walking over to the table, Reisuke decides to re-introduces himself again but this time a bit more casual. "Hello, my name is Einswei, Reisuke. I`m sorta new to this so please go easy on me haha. Sitting down at the table Reisuke analyzes the table slightly remembering how to play, he asks if Eukina wanted to move first.

Eukina Watashi

Eukina had her serious face on and moved her piece. When she was little, she played a lot of chess with her adoptive parents, so she was very good at it.

"My name is Eukina, and by the way, never underestimate a woman. " Eukina answered.

Harou Sakamoto

Harou had never played chess before, but he found himself outside the chess clubs door. "Is this really the most appealing club?" he asked himself. He had decided that in order to keep his mind off school work 24/7 he should join a club, but none of the choices were very tempting. He didnt know if he would like chess but it seemed interesting.

"Ugh" he sighed. Instead of making a big deal out of this he decided to just get it over with. He opened the door and walked into the chess club room. Inside there were only a few people to his surprise. He recognized Reisuke playing a game against someone he didnt know, and Sokurunde was setting up tables. Because he knew 2/3 of the club he decided to introduce himself by saying "Hey, I'm interested in learning chess?"

Sokurunde and Eukina Watashi

Sokurunde looked toward the door and saw Harou and greeted him.

"Hello Harou! Nice to see you outside of class! If you did not know already, this is chess club! Over there we have Reisuke Einswei and my sister playing against each other!

Eukina looked up from her game, "Hello! Are you one of Sokurunde's friends? I'm glad he is making some, though it is not really a big surprise since he is so friendly."

Sokurunde beamed a little at that, but remembered that he was supposed to be more mature, "I am the president in this club, and I organized everything in here with Eukina. Do you want to play against me?"

Sokurunde sat down at a nearby table and set up the pieces.

Harou Sakamoto

"Uh, yeah, nice to meet you" he said in reply to Sokurunde's sister. Before he could say anything else he received a surprising request. "Do you want to play against me?" Sokurunde asked him. "Wait wait! I'm not even sure how to play the game, I'm not ready for a full game just yet!" he pleaded with his friend. Hopefully he didnt have to play anyone good on the first day, Harou didnt enjoy getting beat into a pulp at anything.

Sokurunde grinned, "Here, I'll show you!"

Sokurunde led Harou to a convieniently placed poster that read,

HOW TO PLAY CHESS

"Just read that and you will be fine!"

Harou Sakamoto

"Uh, okay" Harou took the advice and decided to glance over the seemingly helpful poster. The poster did very well in describing rules, and because Harou trusted his eyes could see the poster perfectly anywhere in the room, he skipped over which direction the pieces were allowed to move. He read on to figure out what check was and he already knew checkmate, and also that when a pawn reaches the otherside of the board it can become any piece but a king. "Thats kinda cool, it becomes a super-pawn" Harou thought to himself. "Okay I think I got the basic's" he announced.

Sokurunde Watashi

Sokurunde smiled from where he was sitting, "Come play me then! I just started playing too, but Eukina says I am really good!"

Eukina was too focused on her game to say anything back.

"Now, let's play!" Sokurunde moved his piece.

Harou Sakamoto

Harou sat down and immediately Sokurunde made the first move."Shouldnt the beginner make the first move?" he wondered but he didnt really know all the rules. He inspected the piece Sokurunde had moved, and glanced across at the poster, and that was indeed the way it could be moved. "What should I do?" Harou wanted a super pawn and had read that pawns can go 2 spaces on their first move. So he moved a pawn two spaces up!

Sokurunde had wanted to let Harou win, he really had, but he accidenataly gotten his king into checkmate.

"That was fun don't you think Harou?"

Sokurunde started rearranging the pieces back.

Harou Sakamoto

"Well... uh..." Honestly it was a lot more difficult than he thought it would be, maybe because of his opponent, or maybe because he was a complete beginner. "I thought I was doing okay, but apparently I wasnt because I got checkmated" He watched Sokurunde reset the pieces, and decided he didnt want to get slaughtered again. "Maybe this time you can explain your moves after you make them so I learn?" he suggested.

Reisuke Einswei:

Taking Eukina's words into consideration Reisuke tries to really focus on this chess game to create a good impression. But once Harou walked in Reisuke got completely distracted and accidentally moved his king into open territory looking like a sitting duck. Just from looking at his situation he knew that the match was soon to be over.

Sokurunde Watashi

Sokurunde nodded, "Of course, I forgot to explain them last time. I will this time."

Sokurunde moved his knight out, "I just moved my knight out, which can jump over pieces, in front of my pawns, hopefully you already knew that."

Eukina Watashi

Eukina moved her queen one space, "Checkmate."

Eukina looked up at Reisuke, "That was fun, care for another game?"

Reisuke Einswei: "Ha sure why not this time I won`t get distracted so easily. confidently says Reisuke while reseting the board returning all the pieces to their starting places. "If you don`t mind i`ll be taking the first move," says Reisuke while advancing his pawn.

Eukina Watashi

Eukina smiled and nodded as Reisuke moved his pawn. She proceded to move her knight two spaces in front of her rook.

"You won't be winning this time" Eukina said with a smile.

Harou Sakamoto

"...hopefully you already knew that." Sokurunde explained another chess rule. "Er, well actually no" he wanted to say but he didnt want to sound stupid. "Yeah i noticed that!" Harou moved his knight out in reply, it seemed like a savy move! However it didnt take long for him to lose it, "Crap! I really do suck at this game!"
