Where do you draw the line when selecting/watching anime?

Basically what the topic title says.

At what point would you stop watching a series or refuse to watch a series based on certain elements that not only question your morals, but also just flat out make you feel uncomfortable?

For me, it would be extreme, extreme violence, such as guts spilling out, limbs being chopped off, organs being ripped out, etc. I would also not watch anything that shows someone deriving sexual pleasure from extreme mutilation and abuse, such as guro or ryona (girl getting beat up). I'm also not a fan of parent-child incest.

I'm all for open-mindedness and creativity, and I'm certainly not against people who create/enjoy anime with those above themes, but I personally just cannot sit through them. I kind of envy people who can, though, you must either have a very high tolerance for graphic themes or are just kind of morally ambiguous. (In a good way?) :D

So...where would you draw the line?

Oh look. People will draw the line at hentai. That's like saying you'll watch all kinds of movies but not pornos. Obvious answer is obvious.

Instead of focusing on extremities and morals, I ignore everything under a 7 on MAL. I think I've kept with that statement for a while now, at least 2 years and counting.

Other than that, there's really nothing else I actively try to ignore. I do have a common dislike in romantic comedies that have a shitty main and harem, but there are often other redeeming qualities in exceptions that I do get the chance to watch.

I guess one other thing I ignore is just about everything that have more than 100 episodes no matter how good they are (looking at you Gintama & One Piece). They are probably animes I know I'd like a lot if I do watch it, but I just don't like the concept of never-ending shows.

Hentai sometimes has slightly more of a storyline than porn so i wouldnt make it a direct connection.

that bad way to go cause the fact that alot of anime that are adted over 8.00 are bad while theres alot og anime rated under 7.0 cause oif laxck of a proper weighted score

Certain cgi'd Animes as well.

First, get your typos at least to an understandable degree.

Second, opinions. My tastes follow the aggregates more often than not. You, quite obviously, don't. So let's leave it at that.

My opinion is my own, of course, but isn't it rather close-minded of you to automatically omit anime below a certain rating? I personally couldn't let others decide for me, what's good and what isn't.

What do you mean by "sexist" exactly? Do you mean that you don't like when people of the opposite sex are treated differently? If so, that means that you're okay with anime involving females getting punched in the face/beat up as if they were men, right?? Cause I mean, that would be equal treatment regarding voilence..

I don't mind some fanservice, but when a show's really ecchi, to the point that it focuses more on that than the actual story and character development...

Dokoro-chan and Elfen Lied level gore is also something I don't care for. Higurashi was fine.

Anything with Gen Urobochi involved.

I prefer to call it, time-saving. As ideal as it is to try things out yourself, I do not wish to spend time on this if I don't have to. I don't doubt there are hidden gems among the lowly rated shows, but I also don't want to waste my time searching and trying them out. However, I'll gladly waste my time posting aimlessly on MAL. That's just my contradictory human nature, you see.

I think people in general let others to decide all the time, whether we are conscious of it or not. I don't really see a problem with this, as long as it's nothing really important. Which, anime viewing, isn't.

What I mean is, anime that treats genders negatively. For example, I never read Bakuman when I read this.

I've seen fanservice being coupled as sexism, but no. I don't think it is (but I'm biased XD). Only stuff like "Oh hey she can cook, she'd make a good wife" really grinds my gears in anime.

I won't watch for sure: yaoi & hentai. There's also some that I mostly don't watch unless they really look good in other aspects: harem or any other overly-ecchi/fanservice anime. As for the rest, if the story/characters seem interesting enough, they'll get me to watch it :3. Other stuff doesn't really matter, as I don't care for gore, violence, dismemberment, mahou shoujos, etc ^^.

I once thought like that too, and kinda still do..
Next time you feel bored, check out Gintama. Skip the fillers, watch just the arcs if you will, they're worth it. http://www.yorozuyasoul.com/general/arcs.php
Those longer series might seem like a blatant waste of time, but some are really worth it. Don't want to come off as a complete fantard here, but in my honest opinion Gintama has some of the best comedy you will find in anime, with some great action.

I have actually seen several random episodes of Gintama already (courtesy of my friends when we hang out), though I enjoy watching more with them than by myself.

I like that site though, it certainly limits down Gintama's large number into sizable chunks. Was hoping someone would provide me with such a thing than searching it blindly myself. *thumbs up

There's no ifs and or buts about it, the answer is yes.

It takes time to sort through anime for genres, casts, plots, and stuff that interests you. Adding on a mandatory rating just increases time spent trying to find something to watch and because ratings are just subjective a higher score the difference between a 7 and a 6.8 is unnoticeable unless you watch and rate it yourself.

The top arcs in terms of action (those who stand out) would be summed up as; the Benizakura Arc, Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, Yoshiwara in Flames Arc, Red Spider Arc, Kabukicho Four Devas Arc and the Baragaki Arc.
Though most of them are really good, the comedy is what makes this series exceptional.
Thought I should point that out too ;)

Contrary to your claims, nowadays I don't actively look through anime and search for something with a limitation in mind.

Just by posting on MAL on a daily basis, I have noticed quite a number of animes I'd watch, and a simple rejection does not at all increase time-consumption. This is only assuming one is actively trying to find new things by holding every criteria in mind and is in dire need to watch another anime (which would be a slow and tedious process with a poor net result.)

Adding a criteria to a search increase the time spent searching for something that matches all criteria. Whatever process you use to find anime to watch or how often you look doesn't change the basic way searching for something works.

I look for thriller anime typically because I like shows that keep me thinking and on the edge of my seat.

When selecting anime to watch, I obviously look at their MAL page. I look at the rating, then the year, then the summary/ reviews. Finally, I look at the art. It honestly has to pass all of these in order to be considered for me.

Then when watching said anime, if the show drags on, is episodic or is just wildly NOT what I expected, then I drop it and never watch it again. The plot has to be there and it has to be AT LEAST pretty damn good (unless of course for those obv s.o.l. comedies etc..), hence why I dislike episodic anime in general. Also, the art and animation as well as the voice acting has to be good.

That's just off the top of my head really; I'm sure there are plenty others that are not accounted for haha

While it may be true that the basic way of searching increases time consumption by adding a new criteria, there are other factors for me at work which minimizes this fact to be pretty much negligible in terms of time-consumption as a whole.

I have already mentioned some of this but it's pleasantly ignored or irrelevant in what you have to say, so I won't bother to continue on this subject.

I understand your point, but I think you are missing out on good stories just because you dislike that particular element. For example, the series Hikaru no Go (art by Obata, by some strange coincidence....) is much more blatantly sexist than Bakuman and I disliked that aspect thoroughly, but it still is one of the best anime I have ever seen (edit: /manga I have ever read).

I think people are a bit oversensitive about stuff like this. Being good at cooking is a positive trait. I wish I was a better cook. Of course I know that in reality most women are terrible cooks, but anime has no obligation to always portray female characters as inept.

If I already decided to watch the anime, I will usually pull through until the end. The only anime that I dropped outright was Naruto and that was because there was no end in sight to the fillers and I was following the manga anyways. I also dropped Deadman wonderland, but I do plan to start watching that again someday.
But if the anime has main characters that are too ugly, I will usually refuse to start it. It seems like a really stupid reason, but decent looking characters are very important to me. They don't have to be awesome looking characters, just bearable.

I really don't like romance, a little bit is fine, but if it's the main focus of the anime I probably won't like it.

Fanservice, it's nice every now and then especially when used in comedic ways, but when clothes are coming off every single scene I might as well just watch hentai.
