It was too slow paced for me, I prefered manga. But still ending theme was beautiful and story as well. So I don't regret those 45 minutes. It's a shame that they had to part but at least they did it with a smile :)
Sorry for my English ^^' If you notice any mistakes, please tell me about it ^^ Thanks for corrections ^^

To be honest i was bored at the very beginning, but slowly when the romance kicked in, that was when i started enjoying the movie. Teared at the end.. :'( Beautiful.

However the ending was too sudden. Was hoping more.

I thought it was okay. I'm pretty sure my experience with anime like this ruined it for me, as it was sort of obvious from the beginning that Gin was going to disappear somehow. So I was a bit disappointed in the dialogue (a bit corny at times) and really the event that made Gin disappear (Gin made sure not to save her when she was a kid, but he grabs a random boy?). It had the potential to be better in my opinion. And it certainly wasn't bawling or made me teary like other anime.

Now that the nitpicking is out of the way, I really liked how the story was told, through a memory. We also see from the very beginning and very end (in the present) that she's still her cheery self, and the experience with Gin was sad yet not something she regrets. Even though I said I predicted the ending, it was the progression of the story that I thought was done well. In the very beginning, I began thinking that this cannot possibly turn into a romance, and if so how would they do it? Furthermore, it's pretty stupid for a middle/high school girl to play around with a spirit so I thought after a couple of years she wouldn't go back there during the summer and the story somehow takes off from there.

But then it did turn into a romance, and I love how the relationship builds up over time, making what I original thought was ridiculous become something completely natural. And that's probably what I think is the main selling point of this movie for me - changing the way I see things, not an easy feat. Instead of imposing ridiculous romance scenarios onto us like some anime do, Hotarubi no Mori gradually leads me to believe this can actually happen. It's very magical how you can have a convincing fantasy like this, and then have unrealistic "slice of life" anime.

The hug scene was the best, and I love the camera movements. A kiss might have been better like some suggested, but the simple hug keeps the innocence of the relationship that started when she was six.

I think I'll give it 7/10, and revisit it a month later to see if it's memorable or I've forgotten about it.

What I really like in love stories is simplicity, heart and realism, and this one, had it all. Not to mention its very pleasant atmosphere and beautiful art.

This anime was beautiful, I can't say I didn't shed a few tears. The ending was kind of obvious, but I hoped that somehow the girl became a ghost as well.

I hope the little boy dies a horrible death

Wow, this was simply amazing. Very nice story combined with this feeling that only Natsume Yuujinchou can give.
It was a lot like Natsume Yuujinchou, the art and music was similar. But honestly that wasn't bad because I liked it it very much.

It's really good and reminded me of 5 Centimeters Per Second. It's a shame it's so short, but ultimately it works because it successfully told the story it needed to tell.

I really hope Takahiro Omori makes something feature-length, he's a really strong filmmaker.

Bittersweet as hell and I felt like it ended too abruptly (Gin's disappearing was a bit awkward). But all in all it was beautiful and very enjoyable, so I'm giving it an 8/10 :)

Goddamn... :(

Impressed that they could actually create a likable and well-developed relationship in 45 minutes. Gin... ;_; Dammit.

8.5/10 (pretty much perfect for its length, I just can't really give anything higher than that for such a short movie because I'm unable to truly get attached to characters this quickly)

It gave me the same feeling when I watch 5 centimeters per second.

The moment remain before Gin's total disappearance was wasted if I were Hotaru I could do more than just hug Gin like a quick kiss in the lips for her first kiss it's obvious they love each other. <_<

Alright, I just finished watching this and my thoughts:

  • Nice serene animation
  • Mystical themes in the forest
  • Setting reminded me of Higurashi a little
  • Nice bonding between the young girl (Hotaru) and Gin.
  • Cool festival - I want to go to one of them these days

I found the forest scenes to be pretty funny especially the conclusion part. The "date" was definitely not romantic though not matter how I looked @ it. Overall, the series was quite natural and had a mystical feeling for me after watching it.

^Bittersweet moment. What's under the mask is how they came to be.

Overall, a wonderful and touching movie imo. It's only 44 minutes so give it a try. 8/10

The scenery and story was beautiful. It was a really caring movie between a boy who was once a normal human and a human girl. I couldn't help but feel angry and sad at the ending.

I knew it, as soon as those boys came running at the last 10 minutes of the show I could see a ending that would make me sob. God damn..Well at least it portrayed tons of emotions whether it was a happy ending or unhappy ending

10/10. Even though the ending was Q_Q'.

Liked it a lot more than I thought I would - it was a terrific adaption of the manga, even surpassing it (and not just by a little bit). Had me one the verge of tears a couple of times. Best anime I've watched in a good while, yes.

This is really art.
Perfectly made short movie, what else can I say?
But wait, it can't actually be "perfect" to me apperently, because it didn't manage to make me cry.
I really don't even understand myself sometimes, I have cried abot less sad Anime scenes before, so I just don't know why I couldn't here. That probably means it couldn't touch me all the way, so I'll "only" rate this 9/10.
Have to watch more Anime movies. :-)
