loved a new perspective in comparison to the manga
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

for god's sake, it was so shoddy and inferior to the manga, mainly the forced porn stuff...

Gave it 4/10 only for the good screenshots that can be taken from it

like all movies where nature finally gets its revenge on humanity it ISN`T SUPPOSED to have a real plot, humanity gets destroyed !!! and the main chracters, the plot unfolds around , have to survive the movie and then wander into a dead wasteland at the end. i have seen this actually at least 50 times in other (apocalypse)movies.

the idea itself though is brilliant , i have never seen such a disturbing end to humanity. turning into a zombie is like a trip to disneyland compared to what happens in this movie.. imagine it would happen to your family or girlfirend/boyfriend.
technically the animation is very good, distinct rather realistic character designs and the 3d fish monsters were made in a way they don´t disturb the cartoon graphics(which not many animes which use cg-assets get right at all).
the rendering with the green blown up people and yellow rotting gas is much more disgusting then the mangas black n white graphics( the gas is supposed to be blue in the manga). the animations of people unwillingly gettting attached to the creatures in animation is much more horrible then the manga too. i guess thats the reason they chose to make an anime out of this because in the end this anime did add a lot. its one of those rare cases where a long unwinding story isn´t the keypoint. the design for the monsters reminds me alot of the "blue submarine" ovas from 1999.
easily 8/10 because it didn´t let me go for at least 4 to 5 days.

I feel like the producer just skimmed over a couple points of the manga and felt like he was ready to roll. This wasn't just bad, it was very bad and pushing towards being appalling.

I would love to see a faithful rendition of a Ito work; they are some of the most unsettling things I've ever had the pleasure of reading. This on the other hand was the worst animation I've seen since Pupa. It's odd that both of those works were Horrors that had tons of potential, but just fell flat on their face.

But for real, someone needs to be put in jail for raping this story.

After re-watching the entire animated adaptation again, I still take the stance that the manga is far superior. As much as Manga Kaori is more of the "stereotypical pain-in the ass whining bitchy etc etc", she comes of more sympathetic in her final moments especially since Manga Tadashi is even willing to even just sit with her corpse at the ending instead of the hollywood ending where Movie Bland Sue Kaori just escapes and leaves "3rd Wheel dude" to the usual movie script fate.

If by any chance Ito pisses the blood to boil and sues for a faithful remake, I'll say have at least 3-4 OVA episodes 40-50mins+ and maybe one compilation movie lock stock and barrel seal the deal sweetly. Also would had been more nice to put the manga female assistant to the professor as well. As mentioned in an earlier post, might as well make manga tadashi and anime Kaori survive together to pull the heartstrings.

I did enjoy this OVA. The premise was interesting and not something that you'd see in your average anime show. I liked the analogy of it, despite it being downright repulsive at times.

Eh, this wasn't as bad as I thought from the rating, which largely seems to be influenced by disappointed fans of the original manga. I still plan to read the manga, but honestly few anime are as enjoyable after you read the manga, since you pretty much know every future detail.

I honestly found this more entertaining than quite a few 8+/10 anime in the site rankings. It is worth a shot if you are running out of PTW on your list.

This is a weak excuse. If the source material is great and the adaptation is does it justice then it doesn't matter whether you've watched/read one before the other.

I watched this first and found it to be disappointing. Later on I read the manga and found it to be miles better and superior to it in absolutely every way.

What was the point of changing the lead and making the story dumber. Skip this if you can and go read the manga, people.

Sex was 8/10, -2 for being too short and no nipples.

But seriously, what was that even about? The one thing that would have given the entire series a purpose is the USB that the dude had, and Kaori didn't want to take it with her, like, wtf? She would rather risk a global crisis.. okay.

Edit: So I heard that the manga is better? Will definitely read it someday for da sex because the premise was pretty good.

So yeah they've changed quite a lot of things from the manga, which is honestly not my favorite of Junji Ito's work, but that wasn't that disturbing.
And yeah the plot is a bit more classical but it's decent.

I wasn't expecting horror per say. As a Junji Ito work, it would more so be horrific in a visual or in thought, which is what this anime successfully pulled off. It wasn't really scary in terms of paranoia or anything, but the scenario was ridiculously horrific. This is, perhaps, one of the worst ways I've seen humanity go out in fiction. Even becoming a zombie would have been better, as in this story, humanity seemed to have become glomped into a hivemind of...whatever the hell that was. There was great imagination in this story, but goodness gracious was that disgusting.

The movie started interesting with the girls in the house and I expected a funny apocalypse setting with walking fish and sharks and some ecchi scenes because of the sex at the beginning. But after some time when Erika became a fat farting mutant/zombie and the infected people were bound on these walking machines with the hose in the butt and deepthroat it was just disgusting and very disturbing. It was no horror series for me, only a sick series that makes me feel bad and upset.

If they don't know where those walkers come from how are we going to know?

The movie didn't even give an update if Kaori and Shirakawa survived, most of all if the disaster was eradicated. This was a half ass, no! quarter ass movie that gave us nothing about it just some obnoxious characters who bitch about each other, yeah I'm talking to especially you Erika and Aki. Maori also wasn't the best, constantly obsessed with Tadashi whom she couldn't save in the end.

Looks like also the professor survived or also should I say evolved, judging by that flying object that Shirakawa saw. Stupid movie deserves a stupid rating.

4/10.

No wonder why Takayuki Hirao is regarded as the most important disciple of great Satoshi Kon,this 1 hour long OVA was reminding me of Kon's masterpiece Paranoia Agent . Fairly enough, the camera movement Hirao is capable of,something he shares with Tetsuro Araki,is also present . Loved the production value of this product .

What I have problems with it,is that it does make little sense on time to time .Like there were fish attack in the runway but airport was safe ? There are lots of parts where I felt like fishes were coming because they are needed and when they are not, they are absent from the screen as well.

the horror was real and I enjoyed it .

Well that was an experience. Wasn't a fan of the first 10 or so minutes, the characters were annoying and everything just kinda felt unnatural and forced. It improved a lot once Kaori started heading to Tokyo up until the uncle's house. That section was the best part of the movie/OVA, reminded me a lot of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I wish it was more of that: the fish monsters and the struggle to survive while reaching the end goal. But once the infected bloated humans started to become the focal point of the story and the history behind the virus and mechanical legs and everything, that's when I started to lose hope.

Overall, it was okay. Had a strong middle stage but ultimately ended up being too weird for me near the end.

Why did they change so much? The blueprint for a fun movie with some sort of base plot was there. Instead they split manga Kaori's demise into 3 different characters and added some pleb with a camera. The manga wasnt great but atleast it was fun and interesting to follow. This just feels like it had no passion or structure behind it.

3/10 and that should say enough about this movie..... but comments are free so here are mine.
1. Erika is a slut. Someone above posted that comment and it is a truism. "Hey, treat me gently. I am wounded." in the middle of a 3 way is Pure Gold.

2.Watching the Land Sharks reminded me of an all time terrible cult movie: Sharknado! What could go wrong with CGI Sharks with legs?

3. Erika and Aki .... Now here was some Laurel and Hardy action! Lots of name calling, fighting, and (gasp) revelations! Apparently Erika did the Big Nasty with Kaori's fiancee!! The name calling is fantastic.

4. All the fart and anus jokes you can imagine. Sprinkle in some "almost" tentacle sex .... some unexciting breast views..... and that is it for entertainment in this movie. The dialogue and editing were terrible. The artwork was cheaply done .... maybe to allow those CGI Land Sharks to be placed all over. At least Planet of the Apes had the beach scene with the Statue of Liberty at the end to give you a jolt. This waste of effort just had a rotting smell .....so I guess it truly was appropriate.

3/10

As one who's read the original manga, I can't judge and critique this solely as a standalone movie,
but as a fan of the manga, this anime adaption was awful. 3/10.

Technically on the visuals and sound; the soundtrack/sfx is decent, the animation is very good, but the cast's acting is very bad.
They're unsuccessful in evoking realism in their emotions, and they completely lack the skill to produce legitimate horror in their voices or any other extraordinary emotion.

The addition of original characters, exclusion of one character, along with the switching of roles and dialogue was terrible.
For what it was, I personally liked the original manga. Unfortunately, this anime adaptation ruined and somewhat killed the full original depiction of the manga with its changes.

Overall, the sub-genre romance struggle of survival from the couple in the manga was very good,
so for the scenes of close-death from them both as the boyfriend Tadashi does his best to protect his girlfriend Kaori to be replaced by (new characters) friends and another man with Kaori was unpleasant.

The element of love, albeit not exactly grand in quality as a theme in the story, was very apparent in the manga.
In the anime, it's present, but arguably lost and forgettable. To the point that there's little to no care for the death of the significant other in the finale in comparison to the manga.

... In the anime,
the pacing of the incoming danger of crawling sea-creatures is very fast unlike the manga where the news slowly surfaces only after Tadashi and Kaori move back to Tokyo, while Kaori's legit paranoia continues as she's the only conscious one of danger who can smell the rot, as the floating bag of the fish that Tadashi killed followed her to Tokyo to which she screams in terror.
There's also more hints in the anime that quicken's our awareness of what's to come.

The changes in the anime are odd.
Instead of being a dependent fearful woman, Kaori was switched to Tadashi's role; as a strict, empathetic, courageous woman desperate to save her lover.
The anime's intention to reveal this type of character is very brief from how she judges her slut friend (Erika) for entertaining playboys, and correcting her other friend (Aki) that the slut Erika was only afraid and didn't mean to kick Aki in the face when attempting to run away.

The addition and dynamic of Erika/Aki alone is decent, but in the story of Gyo, they ruin the intended horrific scenes that were of Kaori and Tadashi that builds the beginning of their horror.
On its own, a slut losing her beauty, while the fugly one takes revenge by killing her and briefly attaining amnesia through trauma, to then die herself somewhat through karma to the slut is decent... but to me it's completely meaningless as the anime is subpar.
In the manga, the couple are having their honeymoon on that trip, flee the shark together, and Tadashi is the one to fall and survive in that pit of sea-creatures while he was searching for Kaori who escaped. She's the one who his uncle put into his machine, while Tadashi is the immune one.

I personally hate the change from Kaori,
because I personally enjoyed her horrific paranoia as the only one who was conscious of the smell and the incoming danger, while Tadashi didn't believe her until they were finally confronted with the shark.
Their arguments as a couple, reconciliation, along with her dependent desire of love to be with him, as he protects her was fairly entertaining.
Unfortunately, that isn't properly shown in the anime because it's ruined with the switch of other characters and another man in her presence.

The slight changes in the finale itself is bizarre as well.
In the manga, after Tadashi finally reunites with Kaori, he finds her machine, with Kaori flayed as a skeleton, and looks into the distance... while the world continues in its current terror.
In the anime, they make Kaori chuckle when replying about the smell, stating that she's used to it... when, ironically, in the manga, she detested it since first smelling it and was truly traumatized from it.
... It doesn't relay the same feeling of the original ending at all. One of a depressed man losing everything, with the world in jeopardy... to another of a woman seeming content.

As for the last original character, Shirakawa- 'Meaningless as well.
A videographer who coincidentally is searching for Koyanagi to frame, with a passion to reveal truth for the tragic past of his deceased parents.
Worse is the inexplainable attempt to connect his passion to Koyanagi's when he also claims to want to reveal the truth. Like the other new characters, Shirakawa kills the full original intent of the manga by replacing Tadashi.

Finally, Tadashi's uncle, Koyanagi.
The decision to cut his full knowledge of the crawling machines, with the fact that it was the creation of his grandpa, which is what drove his obsession to surpass his grandpa's invention with his own superior machine is utterly stupid, because then there is no sense to his actions in the anime.
In the manga, Tadashi brings the floating bag of the rotten crawling fish to his genius uncle to investigate which is what starts everything for Koyanagi.

Even though the romance in Koyanagi's character with his assistant was abrupt in the original story, it created the scene of her being captured by him in his flying machine, while also clearing the fact that the ghost gas of the machines keeps the victims "alive", which is shown through Koyanagi and Kaori when they're both shown to be jealous as corpses when they attempt to capture their romantic interest.
So, the exclusion of assistant Yoshiyama was a little surprising. Their dynamic is indeed odd for the complete lack of love shown from them, but they're used to ascertain the living emotions of the corpses in the machines.

My final critiscm would be the visibility and awareness of the haunted gas.
The visible haunted gas through fire in the circus didn't have the same art depiction of what the manga had at all of Junji Itou's art, which was disappointing. Nor was all of the scenes of haunted gas shown, including another where Tadashi was running away from the ghost's attempting to capture him.
Very disappointing anime adaption of Gyo.
