THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

And with tongue planted firmly in cheek, the Bentenmaru makes its first raid under the command of Captain Marika Katou.

I found the episode very entertaining, and loved that they sent Kane ahead to act as a staged victim so that when they boarded the target they could use a combination of showmanship and intimidation.

For those wanting more action, the preview all but shouts out "There will be war!"

That showy style of pirating is class epicified, nice comeback shot Marika, I wasn't expecting her to pull off a gunshot like that.

I'm glad Chiaki joined Marika's crew though, the series wouldn't be as good without both of them together.

The preview is pretty much suggesting next week's ep will be ship vs ship warfare

Marika is so awesome in her pirate outfit. I loved it when she pulled off that gunshot when she almost lost the fight.

Ok, so Marika's pirate captain training begins and she has her 1st hit, btw doesn't this have that "Star Trek" thing in it, were Marika is the captain, Chaki is Mr. Spock, Misa is Doc. McCoy and Kane is Mr. Zulu?

Them taking the Princess Apricot is like something simililar to "I M Weasel" were the people are even happy to be boraded by pirates.

Ah yes, the political side of Privateering. I sort of feel bad for Marika, but that ditz thing Chiaki was talking about annoys me, tool. I liked seeing those two rich chicks freaking out, though, and I laughed when one swooned.

Schnitzer is now the best character, by the way.

I loled at Marika's first raid. It had all the "I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a mighty pirate!" feeling. Also, she wears less makeup and still is cuter than Jack Sparrow *dodges Bullets from all the Johnny Depp fangirls*

Still, story progresses slowly, but I like how the story goes. And who else was all like "aww, don't be such a tsundere", when Chiaki left again?

EDIT: Looking at that cardboard-UFO made me think of denpa onna XD

I want Rambo in a mecha-suit with a laser-chainsaw gun that fires nuclear warheads, fighting the love-child of Predator, Alien, a group of Bangladeshi terrorists, and Satan. (Actually that would be a pretty sick show) - StopDropAndBowl

Somewhat. Marika reminds me of Kirk in some ways given her high intelligence, ability to see unusual ways to solve problems, single-minded focus during a crisis, and her attraction to an adventurous and dangerous lifestyle as a fulfilling purpose in and of itself (who knows, she may even turn out to be a womanizer, though I doubt that). But there are a lot of differences between the two as well. The other characters I don't see the comparison so much, they seem to be very different character types to me. However, I've been comparing the style of the two shows in my head a lot, given that both feature a lot of dialog, a strong emphasis on putting "science" in the Sci-Fi, and a mix of ways the characters resolve conflict.

On the other hand, the original Star Trek was very much a political and moral/ethical beast, often used to highlight the creator's opinions on the political, social and moral issues of the early 1960s. Mouretsu Pirates has none of that (so far).

I loved that paper running part - it made it more realistic, as she is working for the government
so there are some duties, regulations and all conected with it, like in real life (as technicaly she is not a pirate)

and the training part with few nice scenes... but what was with model making lessons :D

also ship attack part - it was cute and I can somehow understand that theatrical part of it after all some people like such stuff, especially if it's safe and local atraction :)

Kirk? I would rather go into Next Generations - she is NOT Picard, but has some traits of Riker

I CERTAINLY HOPE NOT.

Hmm. Even more of a womanizer...should Chiaki start worrying about her virtue?

Whats with the Star Trek references from you guys? It's clear that Marika = Guybrush Threepwood and Chiaki = Elaine Marley

My best guess is the model making lesson would give her a better mental image of what her ship looks like on the outside.

I'm not serious about the Star Trek comparison - in the end I don't really think it applies. However, this folder was the first I had seen "Guybrush Threepwood" and it meant nothing to me until I looked it up on wiki, so I can't agree with you or throw stones at you one way or another ;)

Kane played his part so well and Marika was so awesome. She was so entertaining during the raid and with that "shot". Next episode looks hot.

This would be the right time and place to put my hand onto your should and shake my head in sadness. You really missed an important part of human history there

BTT, I hope the next episodes will introduce (REALLY introduce) the other crewmembers of the Bentenmaru.

Great episode. It was nice to get a glimpse of the incredibly futuristic looking major cities. Hopefully we will see more of these.

I'm joining in shame ceremony as I forgot whom we were talking about... on my excuse I can only say that I was more into X-Com series or things like TIE Fighter :D

I think that there will be a lot of time for presentation - or at least glimpses of it. Stellvia had similar large cast and they did it :) plus it was nice to see Schnitzer as an interesting one
