This topic part of our BBcode Tutorials section:
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=419453

There's a full BBcode tutorial here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=398185

A quick reference guide of all the code with examples of the font changes they make. The tags you use are in red for easy copy and pasting! Please ask questions in the full tutorial thread linked above.

Bold text: [b][/b]
example: I love Hatsune Miku!

Color Text: [color=][/color]
example: I love Hatsune Miku!

Use a color name for your color like red, blue, etc.

Italics: [i][/i]
example: I love Hatsune Miku!

Underline: [u][/u]
example:I love Hatsune MIku!

Strike-through: [s][/s]
example:I love Hatsune Miku!

Code: [code][/code]
example:
<pre><pre><pre>I love Hatsune Miku!

Resizing text: [size=][/size]
example: I love Hatsune Miku!
note: after the equal sign enter the number of the size you want your text. For example, 150 for large text. Not 150px or 150%.

Centering text: [center][/center]
example:
I love Hatsune Miku!

Moving text to the right: [right][/right]
example:
I love Hatsune Miku!

Embedding a link: [url=][/url]
example (links to my page):I love Hatsune Miku!
note: Change what site you want your text to link to after the equal sign. Put the text or images you want your link embedded into in between the two tags.

Posting a spoiler: [spoiler] [/spoiler]
Anything in between the spoiler tags gets concealed by the spoiler button

Example spoiler:

Post an image: [img][/img]
note: You have to place the direct image link from the site you uploaded the image to between the two tags. Example of such a link: http://i44.tinypic.com/1zefb5i.jpg

Example of an image posted:

Embed a Youtube video: [yt][/yt]
note: The link you need to put in between the tags can be found in the address bar of the Youtube video's page, its the link after v= in the Youtube address

visual example of finding link:
http://i40.tinypic.com/23k82yr.jpg

Example of a youtube link and its embedded video code in red:
link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn-RyQTovOY
embed code for that link: [yt]vn-RyQTovOY[/yt]

Example of an embedded video:

Make an ordered list
[list=1]
[*]item 1
[*]item 2
[*]item 3
[*]item 4
[/list]

Example in use:

  1. item 1
  2. item 2
  3. item 3
  4. item 4

Note: post your items 1 through 4 after the *]

Combining tags

Example:
[b][color=purple][u]I love Hatsune Miku![/u][/color][/b]

Result:
I love Hatsune Miku!

Example:
[b][color=purple]I[u]love[/u]Hatsune[/color]Miku![/b]

Result:
IloveHatsuneMiku!

Be careful when combining URL, YT, and IMG tags!
Make sure you combine them in the correct order so they don't interrupt other tags-

This the correct example(in green), notice I closed the url tag after closing the img tag:
[url=http://myanimelist.net/profile/Shishio-kun][IMG]http://i44.tinypic.com/1zefb5i.jpg[/IMG][/url]

But this wrong (in orange):
[url=http://myanimelist.net/profile/Shishio-kun][img]http://i44.tinypic.com/1zefb5i.jpg[/url][/img]

This is because when I close the url tag first, as in the second example above in yellow the image tag would read [/url] as part of the direct image link which would render it invalid. So the url tag has to be closed after.

Tip: To avoid the problem, I always look carefully close tags in reverse when adding urls, youtube videos, and images.

Posting BBcode as normal text
For example, say you want to post a tag in your post, its normally not possible since the tag disapears in text when it takes effect. One thing you can do is put a space in the tag itself:

For example [b] becomes [ b ]. Now people will know what tag you're referring to.

To post BBcode tags as normal text, I use a special technique. First of all, any tag can be displayed normally by adding to [i][/i] right after the first part of the bracket.

For example:
[b] should be posted as [[i][/i]b]. You do this with all your tags you want to display without them changing.

Then what I do is post the BBcode in Word, then replace all [ with [[i][/i].
