Whats the most sad/depressing anime youve ever watched?

for me its:

Grave of The Fireflies
Saikano
Neon Genesis Evangelion
End of Evangelion
Naruto (When Haku dies)
Code Geass
Rahxephon

Ive also heard about Air, Chrno Crusade, and some others being quite sad or depressing in some moments.

What are yours?

EDIT: It's been about 2 years since I checked this topic. Nice to see it's still going. I've added more to the list of which I thought was sad or depressing.

Also this topic is not supposed to portray a negative reputation towards an anime, nor do I like being sad or depressed. The reason I created this thread was to get some insight on some anime of which people thought were heart-wrenching. An anime with psychological and emotional themes to it, always has an excellent story to it, as I've found.

Please at least offer something else rather than simply dishing out titles in this thread. Thanks.

Well, I get sad and depressed over an anime just because..it's well, over. But I do have a few which I thought were truely sad. A few of them are:

Eureka Seven
Fate/Stay Night
Shining Tears x Wind
Uta~Kata
Utawarerumono

Air and Kanon were both pretty good.

But were nothing compared to the emotional impact of Byousoku 5cm, Haibane Renmei, and Kenshin Tsukioken (sp?). Not necessarily 'sad' anime, but anime that had me so emotionally attached that any sort of conclusion would've been like ripping off superglue-ducttape.

AIR - Left me depressed for about a week.

Kanon - Was extremely sad at times.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - Same as AIR pretty much, but to a lesser extent.

Pretty much all of the animes that have succeeded in making a decent emotional impact on me are in my favorites list: One Piece, Code Geass, Nana and Kanon. Air too, I suppose, though it wasn't quite as good as Kanon was. It's pretty rare that I have an emotional reaction to much of anything though, I guess.

As for depressing, the only animes that I've ever found depressing are the ones that don't realize their true potential and the supremely awesome shows. The former leave me depressed because there are so many shows out there that could've been so great but didn't quite make it. And the latter because they're finished... whenever I finish any fictional entertainment - books, movies, anime, games - it's always depressing that the story doesn't continue any further. Like the entire fantasy world and all the characters in it just died, you know? It makes me want to start it over again for the first time, but that's not really possible.

Starts with Shinji whacking one off over Asuka then leads to Rei turning into a bigger Rei who proceeds to insert a tree into the vagina on her forehead which causes her to get joined at the hip with Shinji meanwhile everyone else dies before going onto destroy the world with glowing crucifixes and blood. Between all this there are pop ups of real word images of death threats, people in the cinema and people walking down the street. Makes perfect sense.

Anyways

5 centimeters per second.
Voices of a distant star (since i presume she's going to die drifting off into distant space after reading too many halo novels :P )
Eflen Lied
Fullmetal alchemist
Rurouni Kenshin trust and betrayal
Cowboy bebop

Grave of the Fireflies will top this list, which is a good thing because it accomplishes it's task. That film is supposed to affecting into beleiveing a cirtain way about war and what it does.

5 Centimeters per Second I feel will also be pretty high on alot of people's lists. for me this wasn't the case. While the movie did affect me, specifically the 2nd part because I related with that more, I didn't find myself depressed or sad. I did find myself in a wave or self contemplation about the distance I have placed between myself an other people emotionally, but I wasn't depressed.

- 5 Centimeters per Second
- Elfen Lied
- Full Moon wo Sagashite ( Episode 42-45 make me almost cry)
- Hotori

- Noir, was sad too
- Angel Links (the end)
- Soukou no Strain
- Lain (yes. I think it was sad too, in some way)

I know there are some more series, but at the moment I can't remember...

Lain definitely has a different kind of sadness - what I got from it was...a kind of reluctant distance with 'humanity'. The way Lain was 'different' made me sad.

Also, Rurouni Kenshin Tsukioken hasn't been mentioned on this list as much as I thought it would be. The main musical motif of that just haunts me for a week or two every time I watch it, which isn't that often considering how heavy it is.

Definitely AIR. I can't even -look- at images of that series anymore without my eyes welling up with tears; the ending hit me really bad, and it's that kind of "sad" that just really lingers on you. ;___; I also found SaiKano almost painfully sad, especially the manga. I remember crying really hard at the ending of the Fushigi Yuugi anime when I watched it a few years ago too. :O

Not sure how many would agree, I haven't seen heaps of anime, let alone serious ones.

Mahou Sensei Negima, not depressing, but I have to say the saddest I've gotten over anime (so far) was the last few episodes with the whole Asuna thing.

Like everyone else said, Grave of the fireflies has gotta be number one.

Voices of a Distant Star has a really big impact too... it was the only 30 minute OVA that has ever made me bawl uncontrolably... I couldn't help but cry during it, honestly... and most anime can't say that!

For me it is:

Fullmetal Alchemist (almost every episode made me cry, and especially the end...)

Naruto (the episodes with Haku and almost everyone's past, and most of all Sasuke's past and departure... >_< And of course, all those talks about friendship and all...)

NANA (It was pretty angsty in the most parts but the ending was a bit encouraging)

One of the saddest animes for me is Inuyasha. It centers around a couple that didn't trust each other or didn't know each other enough to see through manipulations from outside forces and one mans love/obsession for a woman that he bascially traded his soul to have her. thus affecting the entire world for all time. The love triangle is just so sad. Actually, if you think about it, its four people, not just three. HMMMMMMM.......never thought about it like that.
