Title - April Story (Shigatsu monogatari) Director - Shunji Iwai Year of Release - 1998 Duration - 67 minutes Genre - Drama, Romance IMDb - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146271/ Synopsis In spring, a girl leaves the island of Hokkaido to attend university in Tokyo. Once there, she is asked to reveal why she wanted to go there in the first place. Trailer This was probably best saved for April, but I thought it would be good to start things off with a short film and it seems you just can't go wrong with Shunji Iwai. April Story also stars a young Takako Matsu who is just amazing. It's interesting to watch her diversity and progression from April Story into something like Confessions. Saw this movie last night and really liked it. Takako's character is an absolute sweet heart and the directing/screen play is top notch. Thanks for introducing this. Glad you enjoyed it! Takako's character is indeed absolutely adorable. The last part in the rain just melts my heart. You might like Hana and Alice too if you haven't already seen it. It's another film from Shunji Iwai, so you know to expect his subtle, lovely take on filmmaking. It's not so dissimilar to April Story actually, and equally includes another sweetheart character in the form of Yuu Aoi, who is just amazing. I'm relatively new to Shunji. The only other film I've seen from him is all about Lily Chou Chou and I didn't realize he was the director until I just looked him up. April Story and Chou Chou feel so incredibly different. I'm a tad surprised to find out they came from the same guy. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be watching it soon... Just saw this one and omg it was awesome. Takako's character is indeed adorable. The cinematography is great and the seeing her in the rain with the red umbrella made me melt like an ice-cream on a hot summer day. By the way, didn't she play in Confessions? She looks really familiar. If you are a fan of (or simply interested in) Japanese films then please join the Cinema of Japan club! Thank you (: |

Yeah, it's Takako Matsu from Confessions. I mentioned it briefly in the opening post. April Story was one of her first film works. Iwai seems to prefer using lesser known actors and actresses. Pretty sure Yu Aoi has him to thank for basically starting her career. If you are a fan of (or simply interested in) Japanese films then please join the Cinema of Japan club! Thank you (: |
