In an extra booklet bundled with the second volume of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon Blu-ray, a report of an interview with the director, the series composer, and the novel author was published. In the interview, director Ono Manabu said the script of the first three episodes had been the biggest obstacle.
Series composer Urahata Tatsuhiko said it was difficult to deal with the first volume of the original novel. Most of the production staff felt tiresome to read the first half of the volume although they couldn't stop reading it through the latter half. Urahata was aware that the episodes 2 and 3 were not attractive as an anime. However he didn't omit them because they were indispensable for the climax of the story. Ono was anxious if the shuffled timeline of the events and the lack of action scenes in the episodes 2 and 3 could repel the audience, so he felt relieved to see the excitement of the fans after episode 4.

No wonder it didn't appeal to me at all in the first three episodes. I still dropped it after four though. I just couldn't be bothered anymore.

Hahaha. Horizon really is an anime complicated. The beginning is boring, but after the last episode I had a feeling of enjoyment hehe.

Well, massive inforumping in 3 episodes sure wasn't too interesting, but being vital to the later story i'm glad they didn't ommit anything.

the best is just to wait and marathon it... otherwise its just meh.
Its not that it was too complicated... is just a lot of information and with the 1week break between airing is was confusing as its hard to retain every single detail for that long.
huh?

I'm surprised. I actually felt like the first 2 episodes were great, the middle part dragged on trying to fit tomes into a few episodes, only to have a relatively good finale.

Yeah I find it tiresome to read the first parts of the Horizon novel. Stopped around chapter 5 in the translated ones in BT. Might continue again later.

Also, shouldn't it be "Faced"? Past tense since it's already finished?

I was urged to drop it but I didn't thank god. It made a great turn around knowing that took everything from the light novel and kept going. I am really impressed that they stuck through it most other studios wouldn't have done that.

What a coincidence...I thought that those were the worst 3 episodes of the show as well. Not that the rest of it was really any better though. What a fucking mess that show was...Sunrise really is hit or miss. Sometimes they make something like Votoms or Turn A Gundam and other times they come up with something like this or Victory Gundam. I've really gotta stop religiously watching their stuff....especially their adaptations since Sunrise generally does a better job on their anime original works.

With 2000 pages of reading well hell yes you are going to have some problems reading that much, 1000 page volumes is something that would drive most away from an LN. I'm glad to hear that even in Japan those LN volumes are considered ridiculously long in length and should be split into 4 volumes maybe 5.

Somewhat expected from the staff seeing how thick one light novel volume is for horizon. The first three episodes did feel off for me but like what a lot of people have it. The anime improved after that.

All I can say is no wonder. It's pretty hard to interpret such a novel and make it into an anime.
